The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I don’t think I’m capable of not rooting against even DC projects I’m interested in just out of sheer loathing for Zaslav. Man should be marooned on Pluto.
Wasn't Pluto punished enough by Neil Degrasse Tyson? :o

Some new reporting from the Wall Street Journal:

-WB executives want Superman to gross over $500m.

-Kevin Feige was offered the DC gig before Gunn and Safran but the talks fizzled.

-WBD CEO David Zaslav personally killed the JJ Abrams Superman because he thought the script was ā€œtoo wokeā€.

-Christopher Nolan successfully convinced WB executives to kill a show based on Robin.

-Dwayne ā€œThe Rockā€ Johnson met with David Zaslav to take over DC but the talks fizzled when Black Adam flopped.

-David Zaslav killed every DC project in development with the exception of The Batman 2 so that Gunn and Safran could have a clean slate.

-Batman and Wonder Woman will be re-established and eventually will be united with Superman in a Justice League movie.

-Gunn and Safran want to make two live action and one animated film every year.

I have never been more relieved that Black Adam flopped more then i am now.

We've all dodged a severe catastrophe. :skull:

Seems to be in line with what Gunn has been saying about how it doesn't need to gross a billion or $700 mill.

-Kevin Feige was offered the DC gig before Gunn and Safran but the talks fizzled.

So was Kevin actually thinking about leaving Marvel/Disney? I am guessing he was chaffing under Bob and the mandate to flood the market with MCU shows for Disney Plus.

I am not surprised. That seemed like a project of the previous regime.

-Christopher Nolan successfully convinced WB executives to kill a show based on Robin.

Why would Nolan care about this? Was it going to take place in the TDK Trilogy world?

-Dwayne ā€œThe Rockā€ Johnson met with David Zaslav to take over DC but the talks fizzled when Black Adam flopped.

Obvious.

-David Zaslav killed every DC project in development with the exception of The Batman 2 so that Gunn and Safran could have a clean slate.

I suspect this is one of the reasons Batgirl was written off for a tax break. It was going to be a continuation of a version of the DCEU where Michael Keaton's Batman was going to be fully integrated and stick around. So it had to die for that reason alone.

-Batman and Wonder Woman will be re-established and eventually will be united with Superman in a Justice League movie.

-Gunn and Safran want to make two live action and one animated film every year.

More obvious.

That. Was. Glorious. Everything I wanted and more. Some minor quibbles, but they’re heavily outweighed by everything else.

Gonna let it simmer, but I think it’s flat out my favourite DC movie (comparing to the DCEU output only).

That feud probably tempted him. Though I think he was probably questioning "where do you go from Infinity War" and probably would've been smart of him to leave on a high note and prove he can do it again with DC

I just don't but that...and it would have sucked.

I will have more extensive thoughts either when I get home or tomorrow. Waiting for post credits scenes 2. I don't there is much competition for this at minimum being Superman's 2nd best movie. Great movie. I do wish we had gotten a new Superman theme as opposed to reusing the Williams one. But I am not getting super bent out of shape about it. This new DC reminds me a lot of JLU, which is a good thing for me.

Let James Gunn cook

For those who have seen it:

Can you see Robert Pattinson’s Batman fitting into this universe? Not debating the likelihood (or unlikelihood), but with all the rumours that came about during the course of this film’s production, I’m curious to see what people think.

I can see the characterization fitting well, but not the costume/aesthetics, if that makes sense.

Personally, I very much can not.

But I suppose the beauty of this universe, in theory, is that Gunn wants each movie to be as unique unto itself as possible. So tone and aesthetic shifts can happen to a stronger degree than in the MCU... but I just can't see it. And the universe of The Batman doesn't exactly feel like superheroes have existed for 300 years, y'know. So maybe it's a question of... The Batman COULD exist in the DCU, but the DCU couldn't exist around The Batman.

I have always said that in my view, one could make wildly different movies for their characters and then just team them up and not overthink it and people largely would just be fine with it. The Batman was very scaled down and more realistic, but I think when Pattinson would walk on screen, people just wouldn't care anymore whether it was logical or not.

Could I see Battinson's UNIVERSE fitting into this one? Absolutely not. Could I see Battinson (costume included) fitting into this? Absolutely. He wouldn't bring his "aesthetics" (the cinematography, production design, etc) with him, just his costume. He'd be interacting with the characters of this world. And he could play it exactly the same...it would just come across more humorous here because of how everyone around him would react (which is extremely different from how the people in HIS universe behave). He would be the ultimate stick-in-the-mud in this universe and it would be hilarious, imo. But alas, never to be.

You Pattinson fans need to watch Micky 17. Average movie but that man can act. He certainly could play both Batmen.

I absolutely loved this. As someone who thinks the genre is on it's last legs (not literally but in some ways), this film was a breath of fresh air but also felt like a throwback to a more sincere era of comic book movies. Yes, I'm talking about Raimi Spider-Man vibes because they are here. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan are incredible. Like, I was blown away by them and that apartment interview scene teased in the trailer was the moment i went "yup, Gunn nailed this".

Nicholas Hoult was crazy, menacing, and petty in all the best ways. Absolutely loved his Lex too! He was a strong villain, which by todays standards with these films, is hard to come by.

i think the film felt like it needed to be a bit longer, but regardless, I had the biggest grin on my face the entire time. I said it before, but I NEEDED this film to make me feel something and it did. Not only that, it made me choke up several times. This is a wonderful start to the DCU, and It feels good to be confident in where this is going next. It felt like Superman TAS come to life, and I honestly believe it's my new favorite Superman film.

I'm seeing the film again today.

9/10

I mean if Pattinson is game for playing the Reeves Batman and the DCU Batman, all the power to him. I would be more concerned with audiences becoming confused though, even more so than if they tried to connect Reeves' stuff to the DCU.

A separate actor provides a very clear and decisive break between Reeves and the DCU. Logically it is probably the best way to go.

Nah I want a fresh comic booky Batman for this fresh comic booky universe. I want a Batman thats kind of like Bruce Timm’s that could seamlessly fit into a universe with lanterns and kaiju’s pocket dimensions.

I saw it last night, the movie is good and exactly what superman needed. I was pleasantly surprised with Lex Luthor and his portrayal was way better then what they showed on the trailers.

Some characters got shortchanged and I would've liked to have seen more Clark and the daily planet staff. Also would have liked to have seen Lois and Clark before her finding out, but that's the story Gunn decided to go with and it worked.

Either way, I think they need to capitalize and actually make a direct sequel.

In order for RP to be batman in THIS universe, he'd have to be a totally, completely different batman.
It would be like shoving bale from his universe into this one, or casting Cavill as superman in it.

You need a Batman that can handle the absurd, ie, magic, giant kaijus, flying dogs, etc.

I love RP as Batman, but that universe is very similar to nolan's, ie, it's grounded in realism. It's what we would see if a Batman could exist in "our" world.

It's not a knock on either one because I love both, but neither Bale's nor Robert's Batman would last 2 mins in the DCU universe.

Afflecks would. That's the type of Batman that the DCU needs minus the branding criminals and being confused by the name martha.
( and No, I'm not saying get Affleck lol)
But that Batman could go toe to toe with the most extreme of villains.

seeing this today. I hope it makes enough as Man of Steel. Weird how everyone disliked that film yet it grossed 650 million dollars plus. So this should easily do 800 million.

My brother seen it last night and said its as good as Superman 2 but a bit too goofy and ridiculous even for the silver age comic vibe. I'll hold my thoughts till after.

It has its goofy parts, but it has lots of serious takes as well.
It's basically like a self contained episode of superman the animated series, but on steroids. That's the best way I can describe it.

Not really, those were totally different times at the box office. CBM’s were peaking and the DC brand was riding the highest it’s ever been on Nolan’s coattails. Nolan, whose name was all over the marketing of that film despite his minimal involvement. Now we’re in the age of ā€œsuperhero fatigueā€ at the post-COVID/streaming era box office, and the DC brand is firmly in the gutter. Expectations are wildly different, as they should be. Just being well-received and profitable should be enough.
