The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

DC doesnt really have a brand. I dont think the general public identifies “DC” as really anything.
Been saying this for years. The Marvel Brand only became The Marvel Brand to the GA because they had a string of like 10 hits in a row with that logo/fanfare blaring before each (and even then, some members of the GA still think The Marvel Brand is just code for “all superheroes” lol). DC’s successes are all over map (and under different regimes/branding throughout the years) so their blessing AND curse is that as far as the GA is concerned, each DC property is its own thing, which means they mostly live and die based on how appealing they look in trailers, and how good their WOM is. One being a hit isn’t gonna do much to lift another one up unless a major character from that hit plays a central role that other movie. Likewise, one failing isn’t gonna drag all the others down unless they look too similar. It’s not a great or terrible thing, it just is what it is.

Just wanna take a minute and say thanks to all of y’all on this board who’ve made the lead up to this movie so much fun. I don’t have anyone IRL who gets into this stuff like I do so this is where I come to do all my fangirling, and it’s been great getting to enjoy this journey so much with fellow Supes fans over the last couple years. It’s a been a real blast (and way more fun with a movie that actually delivered what!it seems like a lot of us had been waiting ages for). :hrt: :D :legacy:

I just wanna say, this is such wholesome content. Speaking as someone who isn't and never was losing my mind with hype for this movie and often struggles to feel the peaks of enthusiasm I used to feel for this genre, it's still always enjoyable to hang around this place because of the sense of community, sincere love and celebration for the characters and overall willingness y'all display to continue to get hyped and still give a damn. It's nice to be able to witness and feed a bit off of the positive energy. I really appreciate that there’s still a place on the internet with that vibe, that isn't driven by algorithms, so big shout out to all of y'all keeping punk rock alive over here.

Its so nice to have a Superman movie (or DC movie really) where we’re actually talking about the movie itself and how good it is rather than BTS drama for once.

Folks, I know we don’t always get along, and we definitely don’t always agree. But I think we all share a pretty special bond in that we collectively resonate with these characters emotionally.

And so, I just felt like this was the place to share this. It’s not often that I’ve found myself emotional about comic-book movies. But this movie really touched me in a way that I’ve been needing.

The movie might not be paced perfectly. Some lens choices by the cinematographer might not work for you. I do think the technical aspects were largely excellent, but I have some of my own technical issues that bug me.

But this movie is still sitting with me, in a deep way, because it is about the desire and commitment to be good. To make people feel good. To help where you can. To have the courage to think you can make a difference, even by a small act, like saving a squirrel. This movie has moved me, even days later, because it is about the quest for goodness in a world where goodness isn’t always popular.

Gunn really does get it. And I think we all do here, too. Thanks all for some memorable years, even if I spend a lot of time on the sidelines.

We know he’s been writing some mystery project for quite some time.

Your fellow bald Supe fans don’t want to admit it, but we both know Batman is one he has to get right in this universe. Too much of a temptation for someone like Gunn to simply let any one else direct. His next DC project involves Batman. He gets Batman and Superman team up right, he can then pull back and later direct something obscure for DC etc. But one way or another he ditching the boyscout. :o

You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
When I met you
I picked you out, I shook up and turned you around
Turned you into someone new
Now five years later on, you've got the world at your feet
Success has been so easy for you
But don't forget, it's me who put you where you are now
And I can put you back down too

Posters too young to know you are referencing the Human League.

I wonder if Gunn’s gonna pass director duties over to someone else and spend more time managing the studio and projects.
I'm wondering that myself. That would be a whole different can of worms.

A director must be given some creative freedom.
That said, Would said director want to change things up? And would Gunn even Allow it?
My money is on Gunn directing the sequel also, but you never know until you know.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gunn took Snyder's route, i.e. not making a series of films around one character, but creating his own “broader DC story” with more and more central characters.
This would be in line with his various statements about the next film and the fact that, if I'm not mistaken, Superman would be present without it being a sequel proper, etc.

My money's still on a film featuring, at least, Superman and Batman: I can't imagine Gunn would pass up the opportunity to put his own stamp on his favorite superhero, by his own admission.

Finally got tickets for tomorrow evening. We've had everything from a pet health emergency to our air conditioning breaking over the past few weeks so the universe is doing everything it can to stop us from watching this, but fingers crossed tomorrow is finally the night.

A friend who likes superhero movies but has always been ho-hum about DC and Superman in particular saw it over the weekend. She walked in with her arms crossed and all she'll tell me is that "it's perfect". Winning her over is a great sign on top of the other rave reviews.

I quite enjoyed it but my main issue is the same I had (still have?) with the MCU.

Serious scenes being undermined or interrupted with a funny moment.

I'll point out that I love Thor: Ragnorak, and in my opinion, Thor should have been like this all along. It should have been more comedic, albeit, that doesn't mean I think every single second needed to have a joke or some slapstick humor. Like when Thor tries to impress Valkyrie but misplaces his arm undecidedly on the shelf. Followed by throwing the ball at the window bouncing back in his face. "That's what heroes do." Or when Asgard blew up, a sad moment followed instantly by a joke, Korg saying, "Oh sorry those foundations are gone." Those are the only bits I would have taken out. Again, I think Thor should have been funny, but they shouldn't have used the same approach for Spider-Man. That was the main reason I didn't like Homecoming or Far From Home, because they were literally comedies.

Asgard blowing up isn't a sad moment. The entire thing is a joke. And it's because at that point the film has already established that Asgard isn't a place, it's the people. Who are all on the ship. The sad part is when Thanos shows up and murders a ton of them in Infinity War.

I think DC has a brand. It's just very limited outside of Bats. People know and identify characters like Superman, Lex, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, even the Flash (the generic speedster character). They probably associate them all with Batman, who by himself has Batman, Robin, Joker, Catwoman, Harley, Riddler, Freeze, Penguin, Two-Face.

So when characters show up, they identify is as those people who Batman knows. As opposed to those that Iron Man/Spider-Man/Captain America/Thor knows.

It's interesting because to build more general brand awareness, the approach Gunn is taking is probably not the best. Clayface could end up being really good. But what does that really do for the general audience in terms of building a DC fanbase. Especially when it's most likely the character he's associated with, won't be showing up. I think they might of realized this though and it's probably why sadly Sgt. Rock is probably not going to get back on the schedule.

I don't know, I know most comic book junkies pretty much understand the different rogues gallery and who they individually belong to.

Having said that, moving forward, perhaps Gunn and maybe even Moschetti if he is still directing brave and bold will work outside that construct, and we will be seeing Bats and Justice league crossing over their villains. Batman takes on Lex, Supes takes on Joker etc...Legion Of Doom if it becomes a thing will be epic in terms of storylines and les convulsed:

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone know what was up with that scene in some of the promo material where Mr. Terrific is playing around with Krypto? Was that just for commercials or was that a deleted scene from the film?

That much is true
But even then, I knew I'd find a much better place
Either with or without you
The five years we have had have been such good times
I still love you
But now I think it's time I live my life on my own
I guess it's just what I must do

I hated much of the early 80s synth pop stuff as a teen back then (getting into guitar playing and all the upcoming heavy metal bands), but somehow always loved this over dramatic fun tune (and video). Compared to so much crap from back then, it still holds up.,

I even actually think @Kane52630 might dig it?

Eh the song is overplayed but it's decent.
