The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I don't think so. Even with JJ writing the script, they never had the right directors attached to it.
If JJ directed it, it would've worked. JJ understands earnest heroes like Clark like few others in Hollywood today.

Point is: he wasn't attached to direct and the studio and producers were looking at other directors.

It just wasn't the right time and mindset for that project.

And James Gunn is just as good and ultimately even better, both based on his track record and his approach to Superman , which fully embraces the comic book lore both classic and modern without limitations - which has never been done before on the big screen.

He has a clear vision for the character, and I personally find his approach exciting.

JJ Abrams has been receiving undeserved hate for many years. Is too bad he hasn't done anything since Rise of the Skywalker.
I am really looking forward to his next movie, and I'm cheering for him to leave the shadow of Star Wars looming over him behind.

Every time I see Mission: Impossible III I'm like "I can't believe this is someone's feature film directorial debut". It's so good. He really doesn't get the credit he deserves and is often stuck between fanboyish arguments.

Absolutely. He resurrected the franchise, and gave it a huge jolt of energy after MI 2.

I mean, Rise of Skywalker sucked ****, but I don’t think we can put that entirely on him.

It does, but that shouldn't cause the overwhelming hate that people seem to have for him. And it keeps happening over and over. The way people turned on Taika Waititi because they didn't like Love and Thunder is another one such ridiculous example.

Fandoms truly are the worst sometimes.

I liked JJ’s second Flyby draft. Maybe keeping Krypton around was a bridge too far but, who knows, there could have been a third draft.

Would have been great to see a Superman franchise alongside TDK. In hindsight, a total reboot was probably a better idea than Singer’s SR.

JJ absolutely nailed the characterization of Clark, Lois and Lex. It was better than I've seen from any live-action portrayal thus far. And his last draft of Flyby was very solid, especially for 2003 as it featured a lot of things that hadn't been done in the genre yet and have now become staples. The stuff like Krypton being a war-torn world instead of fully gone and having the Zod knock-off as a villain was a mandate of his commission, and frankly was handled well enough to not be a deal-breaker for me. If that movie had been made by a competent director, I fully believe Supes would've been at the forefront of ushering in the Golden Age of CBM's instead of chasing its success.

Complain about him all you want. But there is anything his movies have, it's heart.

And yeah, he's terrible at action.

Yawn. The average Star Trek TOS episode shows more heart than that piece of crap.

I will give you that his A New Hope ripoff had some cool flying scenes. Terrible characterization and the worst death of a beloved character ever, but the Falcon looked cool.

A ripoff of what? Star Wars? It's a Star Wars movie. :funny:
He literally remade ANH. So creative...

It's cool you like him...to me he is a hack. Taste is subjective my friend :)

Hey I hated him long before that film! And I actually defended him on that one cause TLJ was so awful...

And for me it's the only one that is unwatchable. Even MI:2 I can rewatch if I have too...

Different strokes :)

Man I normally don't buy action figures but this stuff is fire!

Behind the scenes of Superman.

Metamorpho looks amazing and it's cool to see that the FOS robots are practical as well.
