The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

The SR discussion has got me wondering what the state of Superman on film would be if Superman: Flyby had been made back in the day?

If I'm not mistaken, Routh and Cavill both auditioned for it. I'm imagining how different each of their legacies would be now if that movie had been made and was successful, with one of them playing Supes.
With Brett Ratner or McG at the helm? It would've further set back the character on the big screen...

That first draft of Flyby was ridiculous. Destruction porn that would've made Zack Snyder's MOS seem tame by comparison. Lex Luthor being a government agent who is later revealed to be Kryptonian. Just an absolute mess.

There's that, too. I knew they fixed some stuff in the later drafts, but that project wasn't meant to be and I'm glad it didn't happen.

All in all, I think that things happen for a reason. And I can't complain, considering the Superman movie that's about to be released.

I've followed the development of this franchise since the early 90's. Dozens of screenwriters, directors, producers and studio executives. I'm familiar with every single version that was developed. Gunn's Superman film is by far the best version. It's not even close. This is the film we've all been waiting for.

JJ's Superman movie would of been their Iron Man.
I have my issues with JJ but I'd be 110% more positive about the DCU if JJ were running it instead of Gunn. Particularly because there would be a much higher chance of Reeves being open to being part of something run by his buddy.

Several superman films were in or near production since the 90s.
McG's.
Burtons.
JJ's.
A Wolfgang Petersen batman and superman film.
Then the JL film with George Miller.

Ehhhhhh… we’re getting a fair amount of Reeves/DC collaboration as it is, but I really doubt that his entire vision of The Batman as a stand-alone would change just for JJ.

I used to love JJ but I've soured on him quite a bit. I still love his visuals, scores, action and especially pacing BUT I've only seen 2 movies where I felt he had tight scripts: Mission Impossible 3 and Star Trek 2009.

James may be off-putting, especially when it comes to his humor, but he 100% understands how to take the essence of the characters and portray them in a way that's digestible for general audiences and his scripts DO NOT MISS......which is NOT something I can confidently say for JJ.

Despite some minor gripes about James's personality and taste, I'm VERY happy we finally have a bona fide comic book nerd in charge of the DCU.

Sadly, these art covers cement my dissatisfaction with the suit. Nice art though!

As for JJ, I like his stuff (mostly), and I even liked his later drafts of the Flyby script. Take away the parts of Krypton surviving and the prophecy mumbo jumbo, and you have a solid Superman script.

Man, that F4 trailer was fantastic. No pun intended. Gunn better bring it with this trailer. F4 was so good to me that it has me looking at them tickets. Kirby and Pascal are equal great casting as this Supes/Lois, but they have more of a recognition type of advantage. This entire release month is just one big cannibalism of a buttah ball.

You like mystery boxes and people running for no reason that much? :o

JJ is so ridiculously overrated it's not even funny. His films lack any sense of depth or heart and the action is just...blah.

And i want Reeves nowhere near as shared universe.

JJ was given a half a billion dollar contract and he produced nothing. He had his shot and did nothing with it. I wouldn't trust him to manage an entire brand.
Yes, JJ has no history of doing anything. No reviving of multiple franchises and making studios insane amounts of money. Never happened. Not once!

His Star Trek is dreck...and his first Star Wars film was such a ripoff it is almost cliche.

Complain about him all you want. But there is anything his movies have, it's heart.

And yeah, he's terrible at action.

I don't think so. Even with JJ writing the script, they never had the right directors attached to it.

Big difference: JJ directed those himself. I'm a fan of M:I 3 and both his Star Trek movies ,and liked Super 8 and his first Star Wars, but he didn't have much control over Superman aside from being hired to write the script (and who knows if he would've even remained attached until the shooting script).
