As we have seen in all trailers, spots and clips, and from so many rave reviews around the net, it all points out to The Dark Knight being a magnificent film, something beyond a great comic book movie or great summer blockbuster to a true masterpiece comparable to all-time classics. This is all great...

BUT...

So much rave may also generate ultra-high expectations that may be impossible for the actual movie to live up to. Even though there are some movies that are almost universally praised, we still all have our own ideas of what makes a movie go beyond good or great and become something enduring. And it´s near impossible to determine that quality when it opens, only after time has passed and the impact of the movie has been digested and it has become part of our culture and we have seen it out of its particular context in time, that we can tell how much lasting effect it possesses. A lot of classics got bad press when they were released, and some very praised movies have been forgotten. Truth is, just go to see the movie like you go to see any movie, just hoping to enjoy it for what it is and maybe for many more times. If you go thinking it has to be the new Citizen Kane or the new Godfather or whatever is your idea of a masterpiece, you may be setting yourself for disappointment, or blidning yourself to its potential flaws to then be disappointed through repeat viewing.

The other thing is, don´t get worked up if not every critic or every one of your friends, relatives, co-workers or whatever love it. Any movie has its dislikers. There are people who think Apocalypse Now is overrated, Taxi Driver is overrated, and so on. It´s just opinions, we´re all entitled to ours, and the one that should matter the most is your own.

And ENOUGH about that CHUD guy, okay?:cwink::woot:

Our ultra-high expectations will get blown away, Youll see, ill show ya, :D

i remember Superman Returns had nothing but rave reviews, and the trailers were dam amazing too....

but im sure Dark Knight wont follow suit to Returns,.. im just saying..

I haven't really paid attention to the trailers, clips, interviews, reviews, pics, and the heightened hype surrounding the movie. I'm still pretty damn excited for this movie but I'm going to go in with the enthusiasm I had for Batman Begins and not know what to expect.

When I saw Begins I had very very low expectations actually and was clearly blown away by it. When I saw Spiderman 3 I had very very high expectations and was let down big time.

I tried to keep my expectations for this one grounded but the trailers and everything look very promising, and the reviews aren't helping with keeping my expectations low either. However, I'm not expecting this to be the greatest movie of all time. I have a good feeling it's gonna be great and better than Iron Man.

I had forgotten that tidbit about Superman Returns too, how it got good reviews. :( Spiderman 3's advance reviews were great (right?) which put me in a similar spot as I'm in right now waiting for this one to come out.

I'm realistic. I'll expect to see a great movie. It strongly looks like that Nolan is going to give me one.

I was in college when BB came out. So I was really busy and distracted by everything college offers. I think it was a good thing because I knew nothing about the plot or script. This is different though. I still think I'll be blown away like 99% of the people who have seen it.

Yeah, we all know the dangers of high expectations. But by all indications, this will live up to them. And i know spider-man 3 seemed awesome, but i would imagine Bale doesn't do various jigs, flip his hair around, and they don't ruin two-face.

The first few reviews for SR were very positive, but they went down close to release to a positive but not raving 77% on Rottentomatoes, and even back then it was dividing fans´opinions a lot more than TDK is. I like the movie, but I know it´s not a "fanboy dream" movie.

No, SR had mixed-to-good reviews. No one thought it was crap, but there were some mixed feelings about it from some reviewers.

The trailers for SR were fantastic, but that only compounded the disappointing feelings I had about it, because they presented a premise that was bigger and more epic than what the film actually had. Thus, I was disappointed that the film did not live up to what the trailers made it out to be.

TDK's trailers look fantastic, but they actually don't present a lot of plot points at all. I think that will help.

I don't remember rave reviews for SR.

Most reviews were ok and mediore at best.

Actually, Spider-Man 3 had some pretty lackluster early reviews. Some were positive yes, but every day I would watch as the Tomatometer over on RT would decline by sometimes very larger margins. I didn't want to believe it (I was MEGA HYPED for Spider-Man 3) but after viewing the film myself, I understood the reviews.

Sad times. :csad:

My friends and I call this the 'Gladiator effect.'

People buzzed soooo much about th^t movie, that when I finally saw it - it did not live up to the hype.

Moreover, I do not think TDK carries the Gladiator effect.

Might have done had Russel Crowe been Batman......

I think Gladiator's okay. Most of the characters were simply caricatures so I didn't really get into it.

But Gladiator was a summer movie and DID eventually win the Best Picture Oscar, so hopefully that'll be a Gladiator effect that sticks around. :funny:

That's gross and unnecessary.

Oscar's are bull****.

I was so pumped for SM3 and was let down so hard that I think I've become incapable of that level of hype again, even though I love Batman so much more. :(

I'm expecting it to be at least as good as Begins and not much more, hopefully that'll be enough to keep my expectations down.

Oscar's are bull****.
They are, but many people still use them as a gauge of how good stuff is.

My dad, for example. :o I don't think he really appreciates films all that much, but he's got DVDs of all the Oscar winners just...cause...:oldrazz:
