The Director of THOR 3

It'll be funny if they got Kenneth Branagh back.

And when you think about it why wouldn't they? He's no longer busy with Cinderella and he would probably love that sort of epic story about gods facing the twilight of their years

Branagh would be great especially 'cause this time he would have a bigger budget and the entire film on asgard :D

I still want Gore Verbinski but that choice is highly unlikely.

I think WS had a bit too much of action, i mean, we had 5 minutes in between most big action scenes. I loved that movie and the action was very well done, but i actualy wish to have seen more scenes with Steve Rogers doing more casual things, the film sometimes felt more like a SHIELD movie with Cap caught in the middle of the conflict.

It was a political thriller. The fast paced on the run structure was needed for it to work. There wasn't the time to show Steve Rogers sitting on the couch watching TV.

Anyway....

...I would love it if they brought Branagh back. I liked his direction better than Alan Taylor in Thor the Dark World.

KB all the way for me. I wasn't as engaged with TDW visually as i was the with the first one. I felt like the first one matched the comic depiction of Asgard. It was the gilded, shining home of the "gods".

as opposed to this gloomy joint lol (IMO)

the story was better too. whoever marvel decides to bring in, i hope they take inspiration from the first one.

The first Thor had a very Kirby-esque Asgard while TDW had an Asgard taking more inspiration from modern comics, so I wouldn't say that one is more true to the comics than the other.

I prefer the one in TDW, where things looked older just like the Asgardians themselves, and I think the use of more natural materials makes it easier to buy into. While the MCU takes a scientific approach to everything Thor is still fantasy and one of the fantasy tropes is that there is strength in the old.

Branagh helped bring a close personal perspective to each of the characters that made them more realistic to me than how they appeared in TDW. They were otherworldly but human and flawed at the same time, which is very much in sync with the depiction of gods in most polytheistic religions. He just did a better job at keeping the narrative focus on the personal stories so that we didn't get lost in the epic but managed to connect with the characters. It is so easy to create an epic around a character who you just don't care about - the journey becomes the focus and the protagonist merely a vehicle. Now, for some, that style of storytelling is what they are hoping for in a Thor movie but personally my preference is almost always that a character helps guide their narrative and is a fully fleshed out person rather than just a focus to spin the plot around. I think Branagh captured that in the first film and would love to have him back.

Although in fairness I am a huge Shakespeare geek and might be somewhat bias. But no, Thor was a good, solid film even if I didn't watch all his Shakespeare movies as a teenager.

Well said! The character should always win. And yes, Branagh's deep love and respect and talent for Shakespeare is what makes him perfect for Thor. I would welcome him back with open arms.

How I wish they'd get the Russo brothers.
I'd love to see the same approach to Norse Myth as they did with Winter Soldier.

That really wouldn't work. A spy thriller set on Asgard? Count me out.

Yeah. It would feel completely out of place,

*Imagines movie tagline*

Thor: Ragnarok: Now introducing Thor like you've never seen him before! Watch, as he discovers that Asgard has been infiltrated by Robert Redford, Sebastian Stan and Frank Grillo. He must try and stay as closely as possible to the plot of Cap 2 while trying to redeem himself after the abomination that was the last movie in this franchise. Now coming to cinemas in IMAX and 3D!!!!

I totally agree with you. I much prefer the gleaming and sparkling Asgard of Thor 1. It felt much more fantastical and other-worldly whereas the Asgard of TDW just felt like Game of Thrones in space to me. A little too medieval looking. I know there was criticism that Thor 1's Asgard was too sterile and lacked a "lived in" feel which is why I can understand the choice to push it the other way for TDW. I just feel they took it too far. If Thor 1's Asgard was at one end of a spectrum, TDW Asgard was at the complete other end of it instead of being somewhere in the middle. I felt it was a very jarring visual change to what the first film established.

As for directors, I wouldn't mind Branagh returning. He could use some improvement in the action department but overall I loved what he did in Thor.

It's only a three minute action sequence but the Pumpkin Chase is Cinderella was really wonderful, Branagh's improved in that regard.

I still haven't seen Cinderella yet. Gotta check that out. I'm really rooting for Branagh's return. He was so good with the characters. And as far as action, when he filmed the first Thor, Marvel Studios was still young and there were obvious budgetary constraints. He could do so much more now especially with the experience Marvel has under their belt by this point. And IMO Branagh's given us the best overall Thor action sequence in Jotunheim. I also love the confrontation between Loki and Thor at the end of the film. A very visceral and emotionally palpable conflict.

I'd certainly be happy to see Branagh come back. However, I'd be equally excited to see someone new step into the director's chair. The most important thing is that they find somebody who is both passionate about the character and willing to make bold creative decisions ( somewhat similar to WS) to give us a Marvel movie-going experience unlike any other. It needs to feel like a massive, event movie if its expected to hold its own against Justice League P.1 at the box office.

Well, just imagine Branagh back, with the fight choreography of TWS, AoU's cinematographer(so less dutch angles), and ILM rockin' the updated Marvel visual style

his grip on the story aspects, plus Marvel's house visual style (with hopefully a touch more color), could be fantastic

Please, Marvel. Make it happen!!!!

Any other guesses? A director should be announced quite soon.

Definitely, at this moment to me Branagh seems the best man for the job, Thor is still one of my favourite MCU movies and him coming back would make me excited for a Thor solo movie again.

Feige said recently that the rumours surrounding Branagh coming back weren't true:

http://www.slashfilm.com/marvel-studios-update/

That was a bit of a weird report. The quite they gave from Feige said nothing about Branagh, just that they would possibly announce the director at the end of the summer. If he did say something specific about Branagh it would have been proper form to include that quote, although Internet reporting is often terrible.
