Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

I am curious though why they initially felt they did not need fan screenings for Eternals but they did for Shang-Chi though. I'm assuming it was either because of all the COVID/Delta stuff in the summer or maybe they were less confident with Shang-Chi being well received? Or both?

Feige seemed to have full confidence in this. More so then Shang-Chi. They also probably wanted to maximize box office considering the last 20 months.

I think I'm skipping this movie. What I'm hearing isn't enough to justify paying money for a ticket. This is really disappointing. I'll catch this on Disney Plus.

Is anyone else getting tired of Marvel?

Got tickets for Friday night. Expectations are low based on the reviews and honestly not thrilled about the runtime. I feel like a 2 and a half hour movie should be for an Avengers type event.
I am seeing it on Thursday since it is just a tradition for me. I feel the same about the run time, that is probably why I am only going to see it once. I tend to go to Marvel movies on Thursday and again on a Saturday or later in week since Fall is sports season I am busy on weekend. However my excitement for the movie is pretty low and it will have to blow me away for me to go to it again. Avengers were major events so I would go as many times no matter the run time.

Thinking the cast played a big part, I would say Eternals cast is more globally known and they have award director. They likely thought it was enough, but Shang Chi was a smaller cast besides Awkwafina and Kingsley I couldn't say I knew the cast. I thought Liu and everyone was great, but Eternals a majority of the team is very famous.

I am still excited especially for all the upcoming movies. I already was prepared to have a hard restart after Endgame and Spider-Man ended phase 3. The movies being pushed back didn't really help, but I didn't like the release order of BW, Shang-Chi, and Eternals since they had a character who's fate we already know followed by two unknown products. I thought BW was okay and enjoyed it but since we know the character was dead and gone, it didn't mean as much as if it was in phase 3 after Civil War. I really enjoyed Shang Chi since I knew it would be smaller scale and cast.

Eternals being a big team and a 2hr 30min movie is hard to sell when none of them have been referenced or cameo. I don't know what Thor will be like or if they could have put Spider-Man in front of it as a release to have a nice lead in, but I would have liked that.

But either way not losing interest in the MCU with Fantastic Four coming with one of my favorite villains Doom. X-Men and they can have many spin offs hopefully get a well done Gambit on the team. Blade a favorite of mine. GOTG 3, Dr.Strange, Ant-Man & Wasp, Deadpool and they will still let him be Deadpool so 1st R rated MCU movie probably be huge with connections and jokes.

I'll wait for Disney plus as well , though I'm not disappointed as everyone else is .

Having lived through a few decades worth of CBM content, I pretty much expect that , inevitably , some just aren't going to land with everyone, and Marvel isn't immune from that, even though, alot in fandom thought it was.

At the same time, I haven't been to excited to see Eternals anyway, so it's RT score isn't a big let down for me as it would be for a fan who's really looking forward to it.

I wouldn't say tired but for me the MCU concluded with Endgame. I was okay with FFH, disappointed by Black Widow and thought Shanq Chi was awesome. Right now I'm more excited for the Batman and NWH (for obvious reasons).

I am, I've yet to watch Shang-Chi but I don't feel the same hype anymore about these movies since Endgame. They're just movies I can wait to catch on streaming services now and not even feel excited about it releasing.

I blame oversaturation. There's too much of it and it spans too much, making things and events once thought of as important seem almost insignificant, it's hard to explain but that's the general feeling I get. Also the MCU Spider-man never really vibed with me.

Movie listed for opening on Thursday, still no rating and ticket purchase option. Local authority probably is still scratching its head on how to rate the gay element in the film. :funny: My hope of seeing it on a public holiday is probably dashed.

I’m starting to feel the same way. I’ll just wait for Disney+. Also, I’ve got a bunch of other movies and tv shows to catch up on anyway.

I am still interested in the MCU. But let's be real, I am a Marvel fan and the MCU is the realization of what 10 year old me wanted to see when Matt Salinger Cap was all Marvel was giving me. They have my money for life at this point, lol.

Marvel Fatigue is starting to become a reality for me. Two, three movies each year was perfect. Anticipation works.
But 2021? WandaVision, Falcon and Winter Soldier, Loki, What If, Black Widow, Shang Chi, Eternals, Spider-Man, Hawkeye...
Is too damn much. Is not special anymore.

I'm still interested in the MCU for sure, the problem is that I'm not super interested and hyped about some of their upcoming Phase 4 projects.

NWH, MoM and F4 are some that have me super interested tho.

Kind of the sense I am getting is less people are tired for Marvel as much as people are not super excited for characters they have maybe limited experience with or interest in at best. Like a bunch of posts on this page mention F4 and X-Men and NWH as stuff they're interested in. So maybe it isn't Marvel fatigue so much as not being overtly interested in the projects Marvel is choosing.

I'm still interested in Marvel movies, but knowing the amount of Marvel movies coming out in the future; can be a bit overwhelming + add the number of D+ shows I need to watch in the future as well.

Anyway, starting from Blade 1998 - this is now the 59th Marvel live action movie! Thats a lot of movies.

I don't know if that's the case for me. Besides Eternals, I was very interested in different formats for Loki and Falcon and Winter Soldier, or a solo spy thriller with Black Widow. But even those things felt like a let down, they didn't scratch my itch for what those characters could do in their own shows/films. Like I said, the projects are not special anymore. They became content.

The world we live in of mainstream acceptance of DC tv and films, Marvel tv and films, is what I always hoped for as a teen in the 90s.

As a guy who used to scour Tower Records, The Whererhouse, and Bloc Buster video for Superhero tv shows from the 70s and Superhero movie serials , I'm glad that where the genre is at today.

Basically ,all of the big mainstream heroes have been adapted at least once this point ,either on tv ,or film.

So , at this point, the idea of something being " a Marvel movie " isn't enough to automatically get me excited.

At this point, it's gonna more about what the individual property has to offer, as opposed to just the Marvel and DC brand name being enough to get me interested.

Personally speaking while I will be seeing this movie the thing that turned me off was all of the changes from the comics. Yes I know they are D-list characters, but so we're the GOTG and while changes were made to them it wasn't big changes like they have done here.

They should have just used Gaimans run as the first movie, though instead of
killing Sprite make her mortal like in the movie
.

I wouldn't go that far, but I would definitely say my enthusiasm has waned post Endgame. Though to some degree covid related, I haven't seen any MCU film in theater since the Infinity Saga finale. I even refused to pay the 30 clams for Black Widow. Which I am pleased with, since although the flick had some great characters the plot was sort of terrible. It was a lot like TF&TWS in that regard.

But the studio's batting average is still pretty great. Wanda Vision was wonderful and Hawkeye looks like a hoot. And whenever I feel like I am getting to old for this stuff and should transition to true crime podcasts and extreme right wing talk radio, I think back to that child watching Nicholas Hammond awkwardly flail about in a poorly fitting costume and little Benji Grimm proclaiming "Thing Ring Do Your Thing!". My continued fandom is an ongoing tribute to that rapscallion.

My initial reaction to this movie idea was "meh", the first trailer was uber "meh", and the most recent trailers are very "meh". It will probably be a basic and competent movie, but I doubt it will be the game-changer other films have been.

Look at GotG. The first trailer introduced the characters and gave you a brief description of them, while hitting us with a song we all knew, and a little humor to make it memorable. The previews for this have shown characters who seem to be...fairly normal looking and unremarkable...fighting generic CGI beasts. Um....cool? Also, we learn none of their names or special powers from the preview, and we are merely told a generic term "Deviants" for the bad guys/creatures.

It just doesn't have the hook. If this were 15 or 20 years ago, Angelina Jolie would have been enough to get people hyped, but not so much nowadays.

Me, I'll wait until someone gives me a solid, story or comic-driven reason to watch it, of I'll wait until Disney Plus, much like I did for Black Widow.

I think the problem is the past year of stuff hasn't been solid, not oversaturation. If they were all of quality, it's easier to be invested. You can't have enough of these stories than saying there's too much of them. For all the problems of the MCU pre Endgame, you could at least get invested because everything was at least solid with very rare exceptions.

The upcoming stories don't seem as interesting because it seems less story driven from Feige and more out of corporate obligation for "content" to put on Disney Plus. Amongst all these shows and movies, one man like Feige may be spread too thin now. And you lose that level of quality control like before. It's been pretty evident.

I do think the way Marvel can survive is go more auteur driven, I can't believe I'm now saying this, the current DC way, now that you don't have an Endgame in mind. At least take more risks even if they don't wholly succeed. But it seems like they're up to their same old tricks. It's not enough. And Eternals seems to be the realization that even a Chloe Zhao can't stray from the Marvel formula. If she can't do it, this seems to be the MCU we're stuck with. It seems like they're resting on their laurels. You combine that with Marvel's previous problem of having a formula and to now not really branching out, it all feels homogenized. These things are bringing out the negative side to that double edged sword of the MCU plan pre Endgame.

Now it seems like the machine is breaking down a bit. And for all these reasons, I just can't be enthused for any of this anymore. A brand isn't going to get me to pay money. The problem now I can imagine how these movies will be in my head without paying for a ticket, and when you get to that point, why spend your hard earned money for that? They're not gonna stop making Marvel movies, but Endgame was the zenith. Yet here we are more excited for the umpteenth Batman movie.
