Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

I think the news was about an openly gay actor, and the character remains unknown. In any case, it’s doubtful Disney will have any key MCU character who is too openly gay, some subtle hints at best like Fantasy Beast 2. It’s a blockbuster and they don’t want to see it blocked in some countries including China, Indonesia, Singapore, Russia, and a lot more. They could have an overseas version to appease those countries but the backlash back home would be voracious. It would be a no win situation for them to have any MCU character “too gay” unfortunately.

What are the rules in russia? I know it's only that you can't promote homosexuality to children, but what age does that go up to?

Then they’ll make a different version of the film for overseas.

Yes, they could just treat it like Fantastic Beasts, and they’d get just as much flack from the LGBTQ community as they did with FB. If a straight couple gets to kiss in a film, why can’t a gay one?

Money. Film industry is a business that wants to maximise profits.

Guys, at no point did I say that I have anything against hairy chests (can't believe I just typed this sentence...) Heck, I just suggested a hairy-chested dude for the role.

What I'm saying is don't expect Marvel to cast a "bear" as Hercules. Honestly, I'm not even sure what a "bear" is. How hairy do you need to be to count as a "bear"? Is Cavill a "bear"? Why are we even having this discussion?
LMAO

Also, yes. Yes he is.
He's a muscle bear, if you want to get technical.

Well, I'm glad we cleared that up. In any case, I don't think Cavill should play Hercules. As I said a few pages ago, you need an actor with some solid comedic skills for the role and Cavill doesn't have them.

Seriously, is Luke Evans the only gay actor who kind of looks like Hercules?

If by "kind of looks" you mean his hair is vaguely the right colour.

Did anybody suggest Cavill?

Also, Luke Evans isn’t what I would call a “bear”.

Come on now, Evans wouldn't be that bad a choice for the role.

But, I want Luke Evans..
My problem with him is that he's already 40 and he looks his age. Which wouldn't be an issue if not for the fact that Hercules is supposed to be immortal.

I'd rather they cast someone in his 20s. Someone who can convincingly play Hercules for the next decade.

Well, if he’s in his twenties, then he’s a “cub”, I believe? My knowledge of gay terminology is somewhat limited, but “bears” I thought were older men, while “cubs” are the younger types. I would think a “cub” would be the better option.

This conversation is so weird.

But you’re right, Evans is too old, I think.

I actually think Cavill could pull off Hercules but I don't see that happening. I agree about Evans. I like him but he's probably a little too old at this point. I wouldn't mind seeing Tom Hopper in this. He's deserving of a big movie role, I think.

It's going to be a long 5 months until D23. I hope we get some casting news for this sooner rather than later. I think Evans would be fine, but it depends on their plans for the Eternals. He's younger than Cumberbatch, but they did cast younger for Cap and Thor...

Although Cavill was a bit more like Hercules in Mission Impossible, I think he's still a bit too reserved and not really loud or over the top enough. You would be able to tell he's putting it on rather than feeling like it is his real personality. I can't see him having a hearty belly laugh or guffawing or chugging down beer etc.

Cavill is a charming man but he's not the right kind of charming, if that makes any sense.

Yep. The other actor playing an ageless god, Hemsworth, was 28 when Marvel hired him.

I understand what you mean. He's like a charming British gent, which is not the right kind of charming for Hercules. Sure, he could act it, and people would say "It's called ACTING" (they always say that bit in capitals for some reason :o ), but it probably wouldn't feel genuine.

I'm not sure about that. His performance in The Man From UNCLE shows that he has some range, I think. Of course even that role is different from Hercules but it's also different enough from his other roles that I'm convinced he could pull off Hercules as well.

Yes but if they want a gay hero, I’m sure they factored that in. One can hope they aren’t just casting a gay actor so they don’t have to give him any sort of gay romance/vibes in the actual film and not pull a Dumbledore.

Why is everyone already assuming they are merging the Eternals and the Olympians?

Have we heard anything concrete on that at all?

Nope. They're just assuming Hercules will be the gay character that was reportedly going to be in this
