The Friday The 13th Movies Thread - Part 2

Come on guys. Has no one thought of a ski resort during the winter nearby the campsite? It's close enough that a bunchsnowboarding teens (who probably heard rumors decide to head over to the lake to check out the 'rumors' of Jason, etc.)

That makes sense, but not as much sense as...

JASON GOES TO ANTARCTICA

Totally random but I had no idea FVJ was Evangeline Lily's first movie. If you look very closely during the school scene, she's standing by the lockers when Mark starts telling Lori about Freddy. Can't believe I didn't notice it was her 'til now.

Wow nice catch I never noticed.

Yeah, but Jason isn't grounded... at all. He may not have become a zombie until part 6, but he's always been ridiculous.

I want to see them put him up against people that are an actual threat to him. It doesn't need to be explosions and one-liners like Predator, but watching him butcher teenagers for 30 years has gotten stale. If the next film is just Friday 2009 again, what's the point? This aspect of the property is why this property is in shambles. Nobody knows what to do with it and nobody wants to take any risks.

He might not be but parts 1-5 are very much in a grounded world. Theres no disputing that, the early films are the best of the series.

Part six easily trumps the majority of the earlier films. its the only film in the initial series that has any real visual flare, it's legitimately is funny rather than being unintentionally funny, and was a solid deconstruction of the genre long before New Nightmare and Scream came along. I'm not saying it was better than those films, but it was definitely ahead of its time.

There's also no reason Jason vs a SWAT team can't be grounded. Dozens of people have went missing around Camp Crystal Lake, the local authorities would have to call someone in because they clearly can't handle it. Why was Rob Dier the only person actually looking for anyone?

Jason Vs a SWAT team or the campfire tales anthology film that someone suggested a few pages back are the Friday films I want to see. I'm over Jason butchering horny teenagers.

Final Chapter is my favorite F13th film but I always preferred zombie killing machine jason over deformed survivalist jason. I love both but overall I enjoy Jason Lives - Jason X ..Jason the most

I agree with Joe Von Zombie . A great thing about Jason Lives is that Jason mostly take out adults and the protagonists are Tommy in his 20's and the daughter of the local sheriff, no focus on camp counselors or horns teens but it's all about Jason back from the dead and Tommy confronting him.

Random thought: The original Friday the 13th is not a great film when compared to its peers like Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, etc, but it is has better sequels than most of those franchises.

True on all accounts. Even though Jason Lives and New Nightmare were pre-cursors to Scream, I feel like neither really fully got the respect they deserve. Sure, JL is a fan favorite but like you said, it was a film that was ahead of its time in the way it explored and made fun of various horror tropes. And, ironically enough, it's the only film of the series that features literally no nudity. Just goes to show Tom McLoughlin was more concerned with making a good film than stock piling the movie full of gore and nude teenagers.

I'd like to see Jason pushed into new directions as well. Honestly? I'd like to see Jason Takes Manhattan done again. There's so much that could've been done with that idea and Rob Hedden just completely ****** it up. Both the SWAT idea and JTM are ideas that should be revisited with more competent teams in place to execute them.

I've noticed that too. And I've always felt that part II was everything the original needed to be. To date, part II is the only F13th movie where, during my first time watching, my palms were sweaty and my heart was racing during the ending chase sequence with Ginny.

We need something like that again with this franchise.

Tom McLoughlin really deserved a better career than he got. There was a lot of untapped potential there. He could've been another 80's horror icon had he been given more opportunities. The interviews with him in His Name Was Jason were great.

Jason takes Manhattan would definitely be cool, but they would have to call it something else.

I love Part VI it's one of the best but among the majority of F13th fans it's 1-4 that are considered the best of the series. They're even named the core 4 among the fans.

Jason butchering horny teenagers is what the films are about. Jason vs Swat Team you get into hokey territory like Jason X. The series was at its lowest ebb at that stage.

Just because the alleged majority of fans think this is the case, that doesn't make it true.

If you want to see Jason butcher kids then go watch the old movies. There's no real reason to make another one if they're not going to do anything interesting with it.

How does Jason taking on a SWAT team equate the hokey territory of Jason X? There's a massive leap in logic there. Jason taking on an actual real world threat to him would be incredible. They can actually turn the franchise on its head by making these guys have actual personality. That way we're not always rooting for the bad guy. As much as I liked Friday 2009, Jason vs The CW is not something I want to see again.

I still love Jason X, lots of fun. I'd say guilty pleasure but I'm not ashamed to really admit my enjoyment of it.

I dont remember that....so they had that beautiful woman in that movie but she didnt have any lines??

I'm kinda ashamed but Jason X is a quilty pleasure of mine. Overall the worst of the franchise but still has its moments.

I enjoy the whole beginning with Jason captured at a government facility, taking everyone out and getting frozen.

I like the main protagonist and the robot loving guy. They may be among my favorite characters in the whole franchise.

The liquid nitrogen kill and Azrael backbreaker are among my top favorite Jason kills.

I'm still very mixed on Uber Jason but his first appearance in the tunnel or hallway is badass!

I still have the original film at the bottom of my list overall when ranking the series. I just find it very overrated and not that good when it comes to some other franchises and their classic first films. Especially when you have something like Halloween which is one of the holy grail type films when it comes to the genre.

Fair enough. Confession time: Aside from Jason getting the mask, I think Part 3 sucks. Part 2 and Part 4 kick the **** out of it.

Trust me I visit a lot of Friday the 13th fan sites, I listen to the podcasts etc. The core 4 are not allegedly loved by the majority they are loved by the majority. They call them the core 4.

Jason vs Swat Team is action film Jason which is what some of the later instalments were. The series went back to its roots for the reboot.

Look if you prefer that then that's fine but don't act like another teens getting slaughtered film would always be a retread. There are different ways to do it.

But to each their own. We're never gonna agree so let's just agree to disagree on this subject.

College teens or young adults renting cabins during a snowy winter is one way. Another way would be a business tycoon wanting to demolish camp crystal to make all new cabins and condos with his wife, young adult kids and their best friends being with him on the trip to check out the property.

That's a bit of a stretch. I could see someone making a case for the intro to JGTH and parts of Jason X, but those films were not action movies. Derek Mears' take on the character in 2009 was more John Rambo than anything that had come before it.

My idea is to retain the tone of the 2009 film, get rid of the laughably forced humor and put him up against something that can properly fight back. You can combine action and horror very well without it devolving into schlock, but you have to have competent people involved which doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon. I'm sorry, Jason returning to butcher teenagers would be another retread, he's already done it practically every way imaginable.

We will agree to disagree.

Personally I like 6 a lot, it IS funny, but also the way Jason is resurrected is ludicrous

I did like the narrative of the town changing its name and trying to move on

Freddy vs Jason did bring in the "crystal lake being redeveloped" idea

Jason taking on a SWAT team would be utterly stupid, and turn him from a horror figure into an action hero type.

Halloween 4 had Michael Myers kill a station full of Cops, but they were smart enough not to show it. To just show the aftermath of it with dismembered and mutilated bodies, and made it feel horror like and creepy.

The scene you're describing is exactly kind of balance I would like to see. It doesn't have to be a big dumb action movie. Give the SWAT guys enough personality ala Macready, Childs, Windows, etc from The Thing, and you can have a Friday the 13th movie that's gives you reason not root for the psychopath and gives Jason license to get more creative with his kills given his prey's skill-sets.

While I agree that parts two and four are vastly superior, I love the hell out of part three. It's in no way as cohesive as the aforementioned entries but imo, it's still a lot of fun and Chris is one of my favorite final girls.
