I'm always using the voice function thingy. "Xbox, Netflix!"

Radical Ent Closes.

Prototype developer Radical Entertainment saw a "signficant reduction" in staff today and will no longer develop its own games.

The news was confirmed today on Twitter by senior audio designer Rob Bridgett, who formerly worked for the studio. "RIP Radical Entertainment 1991-2012," Bridgett wrote.

We received the following statement from an Activision spokesperson:

"Although we made a substantial investment in the Prototype IP, it did not find a broad commercial audience. Radical is a very talented team of developers, however, we have explored various options for the studio, including a potential sale of the business, and have made a difficult conclusion through the consultation process that the only remaining option is a significant reduction in staff. As such, some employees will remain working for Radical Entertainment supporting other existing Activision Publishing projects, but the studio will cease development of its own games going forward."

I hated Prototype and found it to be dissapointing but its always sad to hear of studios closing up especially ones that put alot of hardwork into their games but they simply just dont get as much attention and sell like the bigger names

I think you're overreacting. First, I never said all Japanese games. Just that I'm not fond of JRPGs. I'm not saying the games are bad, but I just dislike the style of storytelling. Also, no one said that western game companies don't make crappy games, so I'm a bit baffled at why you brought that up? Both make bad games.

I didn't quote you though, not sure why you thought that was towards you, heh. All the negativity towards Japanese games just gave me a general jumping point to say that. As for over reacting, not really. Japanese games are really getting dumped on this gen. It's hard to go to a gaming forum, mention JRPG's, and not get a bunch of Japanese game hate.

Heck, according to Game Informer (had a page dedicated to it), even developers were saying, "You guy's games suck" from the audience during a conference talking about Japanese games. As for why I mentioned bad western games...just because I hate over generalization. "One game/movie/song I tried/watched/listened to of their's sucks, so all of them must suck, we make things better!". I didn't say anyone said that, my point was just not to assume every Japanese game is bad because one gave you (you as in general populace, not you the person I'm quoting) a bad taste doesn't mean all are bad. That's the best way to miss out out on a great game.

Yea i think its a really cool concept and the demo, i felt, worked fairly well.

But i watched a video the other day of some reviewer trying to play it and it really was wigging out on him and i had to scratch my head cuz that wasn't my experience.

I could see a flight combat sim using Kinect. Use your flight stick for actually flying and firing missiles etc and use kinect gestures for things like ejecting and actually starting up the plane before take off(like you have to do on those hardcore PC flight sims)

I think that's the best way to use Kinect. Until we get holodecks, games still need controllers, but that doesn't mean Kinect can't contribute to games. My beef with it was the thought of trying to walk, explore, and fight in something like a Skyrim by jogging in place, and flailing your arms like Jim Carrey having a seisure. However I can definitely see the appeal in still playing with a controller to control your character. While using voice commands and hand gestures to order your allies to move out, or something to that effect.

Kinect Star Wars could have kicked ass in conjunction with a controller (for moving, jumping, and generic lightsaber attacks), while sweeping you arm to do a force push with Kinect. Instead they tried to make it Kinect only, and it turned into a so bad it's funny dancing game with Star Wars characters.

Poor Radical. They've made some great games. I'll always love Hulk Ultimate Destruction, and while Prototype wasn't perfect it still did a lot of things that I loved that no other game managed.

I just hope when it says they will be put to work on other projects, Activision remembers their talents and puts them on one of their own IP's. I'd love to see them have a crack at one of the Marvel titles Activision has or something like that.

That's a real shame about Radical. Their Hulk game was pretty good and Prototype was flawed, but fun. They also made The Simpsons: Hit and Run, a game I played for hours on end when I was younger.

UGH!!!
My dad gave away my Dreamcast without even asking me. I'd be fine with that, if it wasn't for the fact that he gave away Skies of Arcadia too. Like... It's one of my all time favorite games, and he just gave it away without even asking. That was the whole reason I kept my Dreamcast.

I'm trying to find the Legends version for the Gamecube, but that's super expensive and no Gamestop in a 100 mile radius has it. I'm like... super depressed now...

I'm not even upset that he gave my Dreamcast away, it's the fact that he didn't even ask.

yeah speaking of which this the most resent from a dev on the issue.

This is yet another hit to Vancouver’s ever-declining gaming industry. 89 people were laid off from the 20-year-old company. Sad news.

Giant publishers closing the developers that bring variety to the games they publish can't last much longer, can it? At some point, it won't make sense for the majority developers to go with a big publisher, and the balance will shift.

You'd hope so. At this rate it's 'don't deliver a CoD, get shut down'

Yeah, there's a list somewhere of all the studios that have been shut down this generation, and it's staggering.

I don't think we'll have to worry about variety for long though. The "AAA" style of game development is completely unsustainable. There's simply too much risk involved. Just one failure can sink an entire company. Which is why if you look at what the PC space is like now*, I think that's where consoles will be as well in the not too distant future.

*A tiny handful of the largest developers putting out their big budget, mass-market AAA games, meanwhile the vast majority of other game studios are just kind of doing their own thing with smaller budgets and smaller prices.

The less than AAA games should definitely be working with sensible budgets and maybe releasing their games at a differentiating price from launch. I'm sure there is room for them if they know their place in the market. Yeah, as above, something like the pc situation now could be the future for consoles.

With digital distribution becoming more common it's looking that way. AAA publishers have to re-think their approach because it's not working. They're trying to sell insane amounts of stuff to a demographic and more and more people are becoming privy to their shenanigans.

Indie games are definitely great, but they're mostly puzzle/platformers because of their limited resources. But even then they can tell beautiful stories which is ultimately what I play most games for so that's not a negative point for me. This indie approach to design can be seen in games from a lot of developers who have the means to publish games and it's really no surprise that they're successful and well-liked in the gaming world.

Ok, quite disappointing. I thought the 3 player system worked quite well. Don't know if I would have enjoyed the 1st game's campaign quite as much in solo.

Its too bad they were never able to make another Hulk game. One from them on this gen could have been amazing. Better than the crap Sega pushed out

Wow, Seth Killian is now working at Sony Santa Monica.

Hello PlayStation, I’m Seth Killian. A few of you may know me as a familiar face in the world of fighting games, but I’m writing today to say that I’ve joined Sony as the lead game designer for the external group at the Sony’s Santa Monica Studio.

I was excited to join Santa Monica Studio in particular because of the chance to work with some great individuals, but also because of the incredible range of projects they take on. If you head out of my office and turn right, you’ll run into the “God of War: Ascension” team. If you turn left, you’ll find the Giant Sparrow crew working on “The Unfinished Swan.” There are other amazing studios in the world, but nowhere else that I know where you can find that kind of diversity combined with such a deep commitment to greatness–which also happens to sum up what’s so exciting to me about Sony overall.

The external group works with Sony’s outside studios — teams like Queasy Games (Sound Shapes), Fun Bits Interactive (Escape Plan), thatgamecompany (Flower, Journey), and… SuperBot Entertainment, makers of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale!

Fighting games are very close to my heart, and as someone that’s spent much of my life with traditional fighters, All-Stars has been a great opportunity to take a step back and rethink fighting fundamentals from the ground up. The entire team was put together from scratch to create this game, and they are loaded with fighting game superstars (including some impressive tournament credentials–I’m not even the first EVO finalist to join the team!) who love great combat just as much as I do.

All-Stars is also a total love-letter to Sony fans. From the characters, to their special moves, to the incredible level 3 supers, and the stages themselves, I’m not sure there’s ever been such a giant dose of fan-service in Sony history. Beyond great character designs or all the ingenious little ideas that make combat feel great, the real test of a great game to me is that “just *one* more game!” feeling. If it’s 3am and you have to work the next day, but you’ve still got the urge to play again, you know you’re doing something right. You only have to walk through SuperBot’s studio and see all the staff being scolded to stop playing their own game andget back to work to know that they’ve really got something special cooking.

You don’t have to take my word for it, however–we’ll be taking All-Stars on the road and making sure you guys have plenty of opportunities to go hands-on, starting with PlayStation’s first official presence at EVO this weekend. More details soon.

For everyone that’s already reached out, thank you so much for the kind welcome into PlayStation Nation, and for everyone else, I look forward to doing my absolute best to give PlayStation fans the great games they deserve.

thats so random. The guy has been the face of Capcom fighters for most of this gen

I played Resonance over the weekend. That was a pretty good experience, I didn't really get into their last game Gemini Rue but I liked this one a lot.

Never played a Hulk game aside from the crap on the Sega Genesis, and that nonsense on the GBA, so I can't really agree about Sega developed movie Hulk games are

Good for him

Does Mass Effect's 3 ending controversy affect its chances of winning game of the year? (That is if it is in with a chance of winning game of the year) Were critics as hard on the ending as gamers?
