The Gaming Lounge: Beyond - Part 7

Up until last year, 100% of Sony's consoles were, so its not too surprising for people to expect it to be the case with the PS4

They removed BC from new PS3s back in 2008. That whole kerfuffle was a good indicator of where they were headed.

Last gen BC wasn't that big a deal to me, but with this gen, the leap from one gen to the other hasn't been nearly as great as it was previously(I also didn't play a fraction of the games back then that I do now) I can still hop on a ps3/360 game and not feel like iv downgraded all that drastically. That wasn't so much the case last time out. It's why, even tho I expected it, not having some form of BC for these 2 consoles was a bummer.

The 360 had limited BC, the PS3 had PS2 BC for a brief period and PS1 toward it's whole lifetime, Wii had GC BC, Wii U has Wii BC, the DS had GBA BC, the 3DS has DS BC.

I honestly don't think it was unreasonable nor surprising that people expected some type of BC for the new consoles. We've had it pretty consistently up until this PS4/One generation.

correction, they removed PS2 BC but all systems still have PS1 functionality. I dont think it was unreasonable to expect that to at least remain in the PS4 (and PS2 to come back as well considering the PS4 should be powerful enough to handle it). I mean even the Vita is BC with PS1 games (although that was added months post-release). Hopefully thats the case here

Not really. The PS3 is too recent to have proper software emulation. A system must be quite a bit more powerful to handle that which I doubt the PS4 is at the moment. Not to mention games on that ran with the Cell processor which is notorious for being difficult, that's not something that can properly be emulated, at least not anytime soon
So the change from PS3 to PS4 is kinda like the jump from Windows Vista to Windows 7?

Vista to 7 is software, not hardware so the analogy doesnt fit. Traditionally for software emulation to be possible, the system doing the emulating must be incredibly powerful in comparison to the previous one. Here is a link which better explains it.

The PS3 was able to run PS2 games originally bc it contained the actual PS2 hardware inside (CPU and graphics chip). The original 80gb removed one of these and the system had partial software emulation but when both were removed, it no longer could properly emulate PS2 titles, so the functionality went away. If the PS4 had the Cell processor, it would be able to run PS3 games but since it doesnt, thats not a possibility. Its jut not advance enough

Anybody here play minecraft? I just recently got the pc version and I don't have any friends who play it. I'm not a hardcore player, just enjoy exploring and whatnot. Just lookin for someone to join up with.

That is depressing
Why are the ones openly speaking against something do a worse version of the thing they claim they stand against? Or something worse?

Because they're hypocrites. It's pretty sweet when one of them gets found out too.

lol I'm not sure why there's that pic of alumni from star trek in it laughing at him but if it's some weird sulu thing I see dude from supa ninja (don't worry I know who George T )is shaking his heads and rightfully so. George T is actually cool. compare to that man.

'Video games are ruining our kids by promoting violence! (Of which I will be taking advantage of by selling guns to them).' It's the perfect crime!

Videogame violence.....the never ending war, smh I still remember way back in the day when the first Mortal Kombat dropped, that game got so much press on the news, all it did was make kids want the game even more....way to promote

Agreed.

As a guy who loves gaming history & nostalgia across all consoles, BC is individually more important than anything else. But I understand that in many cases it's not possible without raising the price by an unreasonable amount.

I get a primary system depending on what most of my gaming friends have. If any non primary system has BC, in terms of my own use it literally can't lose even if turns out to be a disappointment or doesn't move things forward much. It would still have been worth getting with BC if I can play my entire previous library with that manufacturer while all the actual next gen stuff is a nice bonus on top. I would commit now to buying every future Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo system at launch if they all had full BC (not streaming, not repaying for games I own). It also doesn't matter if games come out ridiculously slowly when a new system launches if it has BC.

And as it stands I don't have space for new systems that don't replace old ones and added to the fact that I will likely always have at least one friend with each console to play any exclusives I'm missing out on, the inclusion/exclusion decision on BC is the difference between me buying all your future systems at launch and possibly buying none of your future systems even though I would otherwise want them and can afford them. :yay:

Total War: Shogun 2 is coming to Mac sometime this Spring. That's pretty rad

Never played a Hitman game in my life and I loved the new Hitman

I really didn't enjoy it when I got it via PS+. I loved the previous Hitman games but Absolution did nothing for me.

Yea Absolution was easily the best game to enter the series with since the previous games didn't age very well, save for Blood Money, that game is still great.
