The Horror Thread - Part 4

Sinister was cool and the concept was pretty great.

I want to take a moment to remind everyone how much I love Sinister.

One of the scariest movies I've ever seen.

One of my favorite horror movies. They are starting the shoot for the sequel this week.

“In the aftermath of the shocking events in Sinister, a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of Wayward Pines) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death. James Ransone, who portrayed the concerned sheriff’s deputy in Sinister, will be reprising his character in Sinister 2.”

Honestly, a big thing that made Sinister work for me in the horror aspect was its chilling score, especially the slow beating of that drum. So much discomfort, it's amazing.

Not Horror...but Horror sites are covering it, so...

Watched Rampage: Capital Punishment (2014), the sequel to what is the crowning achievement in the career of Uwe Boll (which isn't saying much). Rampage was surprisingly good. It was basically about a guy who is fed up with society and goes on a killing spree. He made it out of that first film alive...and now wants to share his message with the world. It is heavy on political corruption, the people being sheep, conspiracy theory type stuff like the Saudis being involved in 9/11 etc. The lead actor is really good in this role, pretty darn convincing.

Look...it's still a Uwe Boll film...you're going to get some bad acting (outside of the lead actor). You're going to get some really lame directing decisions and sloppy editing etc. Once you get past that, the concept is solid enough that it keeps my interest. Maybe it's just because I'm into politics and conspiracies etc. This seems like the franchise that a lot of "we need a revolution" types would really enjoy.

Sadly...a key role is played by Boll himself, as the guy who runs the news channel that the killer guy wants to have his interview with. He is BEYOND awful. I can accept the so-so acting by everyone but the lead, but Boll was just terrible.

Is it a Horror movie? No. But when a guy with an agenda goes on a killing spree and takes hostages, we usually follow the Action Hero who is trying to stop him. But in this we follow the bad guy, who racks up a body count that most slashers would be jealous of. The concept is pretty much a guy calling for a version of The Purge (basically the rich, powerful and vapid) and starting the killing himself. Like a slasher killer, we watch the Rampage films just to watch an unstoppable killer off as many people as possible. But...no...it isn't a Horror franchise. It still might be of interest to Horror fans.

Watched Mischief Night (2014), yet another home invasion movie. They hype this as being Scream meets The Purge. Well...I totally believe that the makers of this movie loved those films, but this doesn't come close to either of them.

There's a girl with psychosomatic blindness that she developed in a car accident that killed her mom years ago. For some reason she blames herself for the accident, even though it wasn't remotely her fault...but it DOES give them a chance to make a rather obvious, groan-inducing preachy statement about safe driving.

Anyway, it's Mischief Night when teenagers play pranks on people. But someone decides to kill instead. But who is stalking her/wanting to kill her? Like Scream, they offer up a bunch of options to choose from, but ultimately it's a waste of time trying to guess. Don't even bothering trying to solve the mystery that they so clumsily shove onto the screen because there is no pay-off. Watch it as a straight up slasher/home invasion (though there is little blood)

The opening kill scene (which has nothing to do with the rest of the film) is SO bad. The acting dialogue etc are so unbelievable that I actually thought it was just a bad attempt at comedy. The lameness of that scene affected my opinion of the entire movie, as I assumed that the killer was harassing her for a certain reason, despite that making ZERO sense. I knew it didn't make sense...I was ready to bash the film for doing it...but the film took another route.

That said...some of the other stuff in the plot doesn't make sense. The lead girl has developed her other senses to the point where she can smell people in the room with her (except the killers, who must not have a scent) and can occasionally do things that she other times can't do. The other characters are CONSTANTLY leaving her alone to go explore...even stopping to look at photographs and comment on them when killers are in the house. This is done to make you suspect them of being the killers, but if they aren't the killer, then why in the blue hell would they keep doing that? The girl's cell phone Siri-type program seems rigged to not recognize the words "911" and "police." There's just a lot of stupid stuff that exists solely to provide tension.

Overall...it is a Scream-like mystery with no resolution and a home invasion film without much blood...with a needless subplot that tells us to be safe drivers. BUT...I've certainly seen far worse movies this year. As far as recent home invasion films go...it's probably somewhere in the middle.

Don't know if you guys have seen this yet.
Michael Myers Returns In ‘Halloween: The Next Chapter’

By MrDisgusting on August 19, 2014@bradmiska

The Michael Myers legacy will continue on when Dimension Films, along with producer Malek S. Akkad, gear up for the latest entry in the Halloween franchise.

Back in May we exclusively reported that the next film was happening, and it was confirmed by the official website. Now, there’s a bit more clarity as Schmoeville reports that the title – as of this writing – is Halloween: The Next Chapter.

They say the film is a fresh new take on the Halloween legacy that will be a companion to the Zombie movies, which may or may not confirm Scout Taylor-Compton’s premature casting announcement. New writers are attached and expected to turn in draft this fall. This is when (presumably) the Weinstein Company will once again change their mind and go in yet another direction.

John Carpenter’s 1978 classic followed a psychotic murderer institutionalized since childhood for the murder of his sister, who escapes and stalks a bookish teenage girl and her friends while his doctor chases him through the streets.

Zombie told a similar tale, while mixing in plenty of Zombie-isms. The sequel went in a more personal and brutal direction. It should be interesting to see what this Next Chapter is, but I like the homage to Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter…

Yeah apparently it's BS and is a ''scoop'' from the 'SchmoesKnow' blog - http://schmoesknow.com/hot-scoop-dimension-is-ready-for-halloween-again-with-the-next-chapter/28137/

As I mentioned above, according to some trusted sources who have spoken with me, I have it on good authority that a script entitled Halloween: The Next Chapter will be turned in in the fall of 2015 with the intention of continuing with the franchise Rob Zombie rebooted.

Halloweenmovies.com are saying it's false.

Sinister was such a letdown. I was pretty pumped for it from the trailer and tv commercials.

Add me to the "meh" pile in regards to Sinister. The praise it gets baffles me.

I loved the characters more than the horror stuff from Sinister.

Sinister is basically Ethan Hawke out-acting the movie he is in.

I watched a move calle haunter yesterday. I was disappointed by how not gripping it was, but some visuals were really interesting, and the concept is not that far from P.T. Not to mention some visuals are totally silent hill like, with the use of the fog. It kinda reminded me of Sinister too (put me in the "i loved this movie" crowd), since the basic concept of the murders is not that different.

There was something visceral to me in this movie. I think they did a great job with the snuff movies. The sound design and the visuals made them really disturbing. And I liked how it was mostly an investigation.

I really enjoyed Haunter just for the fact it was told in a different perspective.

Well it's not that often they do that! :argh:

Watched The Quiet Ones (2014)

The star of this is Olivia Cooke, who was in The Signal and from I hear also makes regular appearances on the Bates Motel show. She is also my current pick to play Death in the Sandman franchise (I assume that Lauren Ashley Carter wouldn't even be in the running...not that they are asking me for casting choices).

Girl is possessed. Mad scientist/professor type is researching her. Not much happens beyond very inexpensive special effects. Just a forgettable time waster that is similar to most Horror movies that are in theaters.

Oh...Slade's *** On Feel The Noize got lots of love in this film...being played 3 or 4 different times on the radio. Kind of an odd tidbit.

Sinister was probably the best horror movie I've seen in 10 years. Sinister was nothing special, but good mystery and acting.

An indie horror film I had been trying to track down was added to Netflix. It's called "Almost Human." I had read some fairly positive reviews. Basically a guy gets abducted by aliens and comes back but something is wrong with him.

I had heard comparisons to films like "Fire in the Sky" so I was interested in checking it out.

Though being fairly well shot keeps the whole thing from feeling really amaturish, this film ends up being pretty much a waste of space. It is mostly a bad XTRO rip off. The few flashes of the abduction scene are like someone trying to make a sweded version of Fire in the Sky, quick flashes of the guy with a shirt being streached over his face.

What really drives this film into the ground though is that one of the few things it actually bothers to put any effort into is a fairly pointless yet graphic alien-on-woman rape scene. It ultimately amounts to nothing as the same woman gets infected by the alien in a completely different way a few scenes later. The rape is just a lazy ploy to be shocking and graphic and it moved the film from being simply disappointing to earning more than a few middle fingers pointed its way.

I've seen maleficent. It scared me, mostly because of Jolie's make-up. Also, it was unoriginal, unlike what they wanted you to believe, which was really terryfying to me.

I got escape from tomorrow. So, it gained some publicity because it was shot without permission in disneyworld. Which is kinda intriguing. It's also, imo, the only interesting thing about the movie. The lead actor was incredibly annoying, and his character was an unlikeable jerk, who was always thinking of his penis before thinking of his children. The story was thin as paper, and the symbolism was incredibly dumb. But the movie worst's sin is that it was boring.

I'm not sure it qualifies as horror, save for the fact that i was horrified by how boring it was.
