The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) - Part 1

Before Hunger Games I don't think I had seen a dystopian future society ruled by such inept people.

Both movies lacked "balls". They play too safe, wich makes them boring, predictable and repetitive (for me).

This one is actually better than the first. But it´s too long. I´ve seen much better stories told in 90 minutes.

It's a little hard to watch Philip Seymour Hoffman in the behind the scenes interviews. :csad:

Even great movies like Catching Fire have to have haters.

****************

I just watched Silver Linings Playbook, for which Jennifer Lawrence won an oscar. She was great in that movie... but not as good as she was in either Hunger Games movie.

It´s true. Haters and people who simply didn´t like it and have their reasons for it.

It's perceived as a movie for teenagers, or even worse, a movie for teenage girls. It's not considered a "serious" role, unlike, ummmm, American Hustle.

Her role in Hunger Games is good, but this is, indeed, a movie which appeals mainly to teenagers and the females.

I could careless who it appeals to. They should be judged on performance alone. This past year her performance was better than Streep and Bullock.

It´s not like she did anything outstanding.

I actually prefered her in American Hustle.

We actually had a discussion on this a whole ago. I honestly like her in the role of Katniss but don't think she did anything "Oscar Worthy" in the film. As much as I like the film I find her performance to be overrated. That said I also find Bullocks performance to be overrated as well. Streep on the other hand was amazing in her role and deserved every nomination she received for it so I don't know what you're talking about.

Finally got to see it. (Got the Best Buy steelbook)
My wife and I just couldn't get the time to go.
Anyways, she loved it as a fan of the book. I really liked it as a film.
The transition from 35mm to IMAX was brilliant. And nearly 50 straight minutes of IMAX footage?! Underrated as a technical feat. Seriously. Very nice looking movie.

While she is fantastic as Katniss, her performance in SLP has far more nuance and has more layers to it. Just the way she mask her intentions and emotions while giving hints throughout gives a lot of variety. Also makes her emotional outburst really effective imo.

Just look the finale. The arrival, how she reacts to the appearance of Nikki, the bar scene, the dance, the aftermath. So many little subtle difference to conveying the varying emotions.

Everything about the movie is pretty overrated IMO.

we get it lol

Lol, I will never understand why a poster who doesn't like a film continues to roam its thread. Surely there's another movie he does like that he can praise and chat about...

If they left the thread, where would they ***** about how awful the movie was instead of doing something constructive for a change?

There are actually tremendous problems with the screenplay to Silver Linings Playbook. Though I enjoyed the movie, at the end of the day it is very deceitful, and as noted elsewhere by critics better than myself, the ending is not third. You're going on about the "subtle nuances" in the third act, but the core problem with that movie is that the third act doesn't emerge naturally from the first two acts.

In contrast, a core strength of the first two hunger games is that everything flows naturally. There are no cheats in the narrative, no BS manoeuvres or dependence on unbelievable luck to make things work. The rules of the universe are established early on, and point B always follows from point A.

But all of that refers to the writing, not the acting. Lawrence's acting in HG1 and HG2 was amazing. If this were a lesser actress... if this were an average big-name Hollywood actress... these movies wouldn't work, I'm going to go out on a limb and just say this. We wouldn't believe that Katniss is truly devoted to her little sister, that she's taken over the role of breadwinner, that she has mixed feelings for both Gale and Peeta and does genuinely fall in love with Peeta later on, and that she's intelligent even though the writers have not resorted to bad writing tricks like having her speak in technobabble and be fluent in 25 languages. Within these movies Katniss communicates ambition, stoicism, anger, fear, love, compassion, trauma, and so on and so fourth, and she is effective and convincing every time.

Surely the greatest of all artistic crimes.

PS: Referring to girls, women, or both girls and women, as "the females", though technically correct, makes you sound like a lunatic.

I bought the blu ray and watched this a third time, and this movie continues to be awesome.

I'm watching the deleted scenes now and they're pretty good. I'm sad that they were deleted, but I understand that directors have to stay under a certain run time, and maintain pacing. I think I'm going to watch all the special features.

This movie was excellent on all levels, HG1 + HG2 are together superior to any pair of comic book movies, maybe on par with a couple. The story is well-integrated, character-driven, and also consequence-driven. It has jokes without lacking substance, and it has several clever moments. The cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci and a lot of other excellent people I had not heard about before (Jenna Malone, etc). Though watching the interviews with Phillip Seymour Hoffman makes me sad right now.

Suzanne Collins and company are geniuses. I feel happier living in a world where there are people like them who really excel at what they do.

I rewatched the movie yesterday. It's great and better made than the first one even though I find its style and execution of conclusion as less satisfying than The Dark Knight or The Empire Strikes Back.

Yes, those "the females" are an easily entertained group. Fortunately, men are never marketed to with pandering films. Oh hold on a tic, the new Transformers commercial is on.

Kato is on permanant vacation so I doubt he's going to see it let alone respond.
