Preview for Hercules: Fall of an Avenger #1.

Athena's personal management not especially great, but given how well she typically plays her cards, presumably this is just to get him to do something.

Wasn't keen on Olivetti drawing this, but this is mostly tolerable (the characters on that double-page spread look like of confused as to exactly where they are, spatially; some are standing, Namora is still heading upward).

Hey, all of Herc's ladies made it to the funeral.

Well, not ALL of Herc's ladies, but at least all of them from the Pak/Van Lente run. ;)

It is kind of funny that Angel is there, considering he hasn't seen Herc or Cho since the end of WWH, which was years ago. I mean the old Champions rarely get together anymore. I bet Wolverine is just there for the Asgardian mead. ;)

Olivetti isn't the type of artist I would usually put on something like this. He's okay, but after Reilly Brown or Rodney Bushemi, it is a bit jarring.

Athena also seems to be playing Cho. Remember, unlike Hera, Athena doesn't want humans to be mindless devoted slaves of the gods. While she wants Cho to be her champion and wants to nudge him along, I think she realizes his suspicion of her pushes him to be smarter and thus a better hero. That or she's just a bit of a ***** like the rest of the Olympic gods despite her best intentions. ;)

Hahaha, Cho pouring some liquor for his dead homie was great. And wow, even Alflyse turned up to mourn. Herc must be really good in the sack, given that he almost ruined her kingdom. I'm surprised Herc's still embraced as a national hero of Greece too, given his reputation. But still, overall, a fitting tribute to Herc.

Fred Van Lente speaks about Fall of an Avenger, Prince of Power, et al.
With Fall of an Avenger, I know a lot of finales are usually just one issue, and even funeral moments of titles are one issue… but Fall of an Avenger is two! So… I’m guessing this is not a normal sort of eulogy we’ve got going on?

It is not! There are definitely two distinct parts. The simplest sort of way to categorize them is one involves the heroes, and one involves the Gods. Because Hercules, you know, exists on both those levels. And we wanted the time to sort of explore both those sides of him.
Thor, obviously, will speak in the "gods" issue; I wonder who else (Athena's not there, but it's possible that either she'll show up or they'll cut away to her thinking about some past episode of her own).

I'm sure she'll be in it to some extent, unless it's all told from the perspective of Cho. I don't know if she'd want to be around Cho at the moment, but it's pretty clear from the last issue of iHerc that she loved Herc dearly and his death, though necessary, broke her heart.

Why wouldn't Alfyse show up? Herc mastered the Elfish Tickler, after all! :awesome:

Why wouldn't Greece appreciate Hercules as a national hero? He's remained active for most of modern history and is literally a hero of legend. They've probably long since gotten used to the fact that he drinks, beds women, and isn't always bright. It is worth noting that many countries in Europe are less, what is the word, "stunned" by sex scandals or character flaws in their public figures than we in America are. In America, if a politician is caught sleeping around or, heaven forbid, had a smoke of weed once 60 years ago, everyone treats it like some horrific national tragedy. "Oh, no, how could a man in a position of power POSSIBLY use it for personal gratification and gain; that is the OPPOSITE of ALL RECORDED HUMAN HISTORY!" :whatever: PulllEEEEEZE. In many European countries, news of a major figure's sexual conquests or personal flaws are tabloid fodder but the masses don't freak out nearly as much as us uptight Americans. I sometimes wonder if the only "civilized" countries more uptight than Americans are Japan and China. And the Japanese at least accept comics and animation as more mainstream than us Americans do. Manga sells in the millions in Japan; no comic has sold in the millions in America for 15 years.

Likely. Athena may want to keep her mourning private since it is complicated and she perhaps doesn't want to give Cho any hint of her involvement.

Hercules: Good Night Sweet Prince

Even gods die eventually.
At the conclusion of "Assault on New Olympus," Hercules met his final fate saving the world, and now his best friend, Amadeus Cho, will take on his mentor's role in May 12's HEROIC AGE: PRINCE OF POWER #1. Before Cho goes about his new duties, however, he has to wrap up some old business in HERCULES: FALL OF AN AVENGER #2 by writers Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente with artist Ariel Olivetti on April 21."We knew the ending of INCREDIBLE HERCULES would be pretty devastating in a number of ways, and it's important sometimes to let the characters breathe along with the readers," says Van Lente of this two-part series' origins. "Like any funeral, it's meant to bring a sense of closure for the loved ones [of] the departed. And we needed to set up Amadeus Cho for his new role in HEROIC AGE: PRINCE OF POWER-and he's going to have to fight a lot of gods, heroes and monsters to secure it."

"HERCULES: FALL OF AN AVENGER and PRINCE OF POWER together form part seven of our first gargantuan eight-part storyline," adds Pak. "So it's pretty major stuff, setting up the giant climax." Son of Zeus and Hera, died during the Siege of Asgard. So what you have is a massive power vacuum in which various gods are scrambling for top position. Athena has initially claimed that role because she's inherited Hera's thunderbolt, but she's going to discover [that's] not without opposition from her brother Apollo, god of the sun." FALL OF AN AVENGER #1 featured a number of Hercules' super-powered friends and allies share memories of their fallen comrade, but the second issue will shift its focus to the Greek pantheon to see how they've dealt with their recent losses. "The gods throughout their history have been an impulsive and squabbling bunch," Van Lente notes. "Don't forget the 'Assault on New Olympus' was very costly to them-they lost not just Hercules, but also Zeus and Hera. Furthermore Ares, the eldest legitimate legitimate son of Zeus andHera, died during the Siege of Asgard. So what you have is a massive power vacuum in which various gods are scrambling for top position. Athena has initially claimed that role because she's inherited Hera's thunderbolt, but she's going to discover [that's] not without opposition from her brother Apollo, god of the sun."

"In short, the gods, being gods, have largely skipped straight past denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance into the little-known sixth stage of grief known as 'fighting over the spoils,'" jokes Pak. "There is one goddess, however, who might have a very different take on all of this. Hint: It isn't Athena."Throughout INCREDIBLE HERCULES, Athena has acted as a sort of guide to Amadeus Cho whether he's liked it or not. Given her recent actions, though, that relationship could become even more volatile in the future."Athena has managed to alienate a lot of people with her mechanizations, even though people don't know as much as you readers do about the full extent of what she's done, [like killing] Hercules," remarks Van Lente. "Amadeus wants to quit being Athena's champion, but Apollo has sicced his champion on him-Phobos from the Secret Warriors, god of fear and son of Ares! Amadeus has no choice but to fight back if he wants to save his own skin."

The conclusion to HERCULES: FALL OF AN AVENGER will lead directly into next month's HEROIC AGE: PRINCE OF POWER #1, which Van Lente and Pak will also write as they continue to unfurl their epic story. "There's a twist ending to this issue that will reveal Amadeus' true motivations, and I think will motivate everybody to be excited about HEROIC AGE: PRINCE OF POWER," promises Van Lente. "I can say no more here under threat of death."Pak, who co-created Amadeus Cho more than four years ago in AMAZING FANTASY #15,always felt the character had the potential to grow into his
current position in the Marvel Universe."From the beginning, I loved that Amadeus had ridiculously big character flaws," remembers the writer. "All that cockiness and the complete lack of impulse control made him hugely fun to write and gave him tons of room to grow. So yes, there was always going to be a big character arc and learning curve for Amadeus, which also formed a big part of my love of the character. He's a moving target, always learning and growing in surprising ways.

"Although it's worth noting that just 'cause he's called the Prince of Power doesn't necessarily make him a hero. You know what they say about absolute power."
Until then, fans will also get a healthy heaping of fisticuffs in addition to their grieving.
"The Namor/Skaar throwdown in FALL OF AVENGER #2 has to be seen to be believed," proclaims Van Lente. And for even more Amadeus Cho, Pak points readers to the character's very own Twitter feed.

Sounds cool, although I still think Hercules will be back eventually. Cho can't support a series for long alone. Still, looks great.

heh Gods die yes, but, they don't stay dead, Thor's an example of that. :D

heck in the Marvel universe even mortals find their way back from the dead.

Nobody stays dead. Just about everyone in the Marvel universe is an example of that. ;)

No, it's from a story set in an alternate universe where Hercules becomes the protector of this other planet.

Hmm, I didn't catch it before in the other solicits, but if Cho is going through various other mythological groups, you can definitely count me in. (Not that I wasn't going to give it at least a shot to begin with). I loves me some mythology.

Yeah, we know the context for it now. Apparently, Prince of Power is all about Cho and Thor searching for Herc. Which makes me really glad Van Lente included Thor in the mini; beyond just being a great new foil for the more confident Cho, it's a nice reminder that, in spite of their often combative relationship, Thor and Herc really are great friends.

I was somewhat iffy on the Prince of Power mini to begin with. I mean, I was probably going to pick it up regardless since it's the continuation of the Herc run anyway, but I was just never much a fan of Cho, at least not Cho without Herc. Now that I know it's about him and Thor searching for Herc, I'm definitely in

I'm not a huge Cho fan either, but he's really come into his own quite well with Fall of an Avenger. I like the setup of Cho as the superhero CEO of the Olympus Group, engaged in a battle of wills with Athena while using her resources to further his own agenda. That's a pretty strong premise, Herc or no Herc. But I am glad that the post-Herc stuff will still center squarely on Herc in some ways, too. Pak and Van Lente are telling a very cohesive story, so it's good that they're retaining the focus on Herc and Cho's relationship above all else.
