The Director's Cut of DD movie is easily better than the theatrical cut, for one, some of the scenes that make the theatrical cut dumber are not included, like the sex scene and the street walk with Elektra before the rain scene. And the sequencing of scenes is better edited and paced.
Just because it's better than liquid crap doesn't it exempt it from being crap itself.
To me the greatest sin of that movie is that it really fails to capture the tone and spirit of the comics. Yeah they try their best to cram a lot of superficial details from Miller's epic but without any of the heart and pathos that made it compelling on the page.
It feels awfully disjointed and unfocused like it has no idea where it wants to go but still wants to be a jack of all trades while mastering none. Easily one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen. The execution is just awful in either version. Thank God the show didn't fall into any of those traps despite it's own flaws.
I will watch the Luke Cage series, cause he's one of two fun halves in the Heroes for Hire duo of him and Iron Fist.
I'll only put up with his eventual appearances in the Iron First show.
As a person of color the character has just always been very off putting to me. Even as a kid I found him very awkward and felt it was way too obvious that privileged white people were trying to write a brother from the hood. Way too many stereotypes and disingenuous attempts at not letting his “blackness” define him but in the end black stereotypes end up accomplishing that task anyway. Dude was the quintessential "angry black man" of the industry for years.
This was made even worse when they tried to re-establish the character and bring him back to prominence in the 2000’s by working the most offensive racial stereotype of them all into his mythos. Having a white woman come in and be the only one that could “tame the beast” in the black man.
When you compare him to characters like The Falcon, Black Lightning, Mr. Terrific II, Black Panther and Deathlok who have avoided the same pitfalls even though they were also written by other priviliged white men it’s even more offensive.
I do realize that it comes from ignorance due to these guys probably never really spending too much time with actual POC. I would never dare say it’s racism cause a lot of those writers do have their heart in the write places intentionally. However it's still pretty jarring. Their inexperience with people of color is so vast that it sticks out like a sore thumb when you come across that type of writing that you can't help but notice.
This is why I gravitated so much towards Milestone Comics back in the day. That stuff felt very organic partially because it came from the collaborations of African Americans, Hispanics and Asian Americans. People who realize that the characters are people first and foremost and not a general representation of their race and creed or some strangers to the party like many non-POC writers tend to approach them ass.
**** Luke Cage and his sweet christmases. Since they are bringing Misty Knight and Iron Fist into this universe I would have to put up with his stupid presence every now and then. A decent tradeoff considering I get exposed to superior characters at the same time. Similar to the comic books.
