Cisco is an engineering genius, but he's immature at times and clearly not leadership material. Caitlin doesn't trust herself due to her KF personality. Harry has shown flashes of brilliance as a tactician, but his inclination is science, and he's seemingly in a state of constant inner turmoil. Joe would make a natural leader, but he's already got one of the most time-consuming jobs and now he's embarking on fatherhood as a late middle-aged man. None of them are good leadership candidates in Barry's absence. With her understanding of psychology and her investigative skills, Iris is the only one who makes sense under the current circumstances.

She has a psychology degree, which would take far more than 3 undergrad classes. I'm guessing that expertise in psychology is standard fare, if not a prerequisite, to professional investigative journalism.

Then she made a tumblr blog that got popular and they gave her a writing position at Picture News based off her writing about "The Streak." She has no degree, she was only a barista.

She's a post grad student, which means that she would already have some sort of B.A. She might also have a degree in journalism, since it stands to reason that a newspaper like Central City Picture News would require at least a bachelor's degree to qualify for an interview. The show may or may not iron out the details of this since focusing on these finer points can quickly become boring. This is probably why there has been no mention of Cisco's education between high school and his employment at S.T.A.R. Labs, but logic dictates that he would have had at least a college education. Still, we can surmise from those character points that both Cisco and Iris have a high level of intelligence.

While the character might not be a favorite of yours, it's undeniable that she was slowly built from season 1 to be particularly important to Team Flash. Her leadership arc isn't out of nowhere.

Speaking of, Felicity had a one-off in Atom's outfit and didn't get a funko for it. But she did get A funko so it's consistent for Iris to get one as herself in her usual look-at-me outfits.

People often mix there consuming hatred of a character and obsession with another character as being representative of the larger fanbase. The people that run these shows do so to make money, if Iris was this hated figure some feel she is, they'd dial her back.

Yeah, and John Cena gets boo'd in nearly all of the arenas in the US, but go check out who sells the most merch and puts up the best segment numbers for WWE, what a small, hardcore vocal minority think doesn't reflect the much larger general audience that watch these shows and don't have fanatical issues with certain characters.
