Iron Man 3 The IRON MAN 3 News & Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

I read on Official Ironman Conic Nods topic:

"Does anyone have pics of the S.H.E.I.L.D. agents when they showed up at the Fireman's ball/event? My friend was convinced he saw a leggy woman with dark hair in the group, leaning towards believing it was Jessica Drew, the first Spiderwoman and a memeber of S.H.E.I.L.D. but I only remember seeing men. Maybe he's a liar, but if not, it would be an awesome easter egg!"

What is "the Fireman's ball/event?"
It's the event that Tony goes to in IM1 while the Mk3 suit is being made. As for the possible Jessica Drew/SHIELD Easter egg, they're full of it and trying to make something out of nothing.

...Nobody posted that RDJ won the people's choice award for Best Action Star?
I'm SHOCKED

What movie are you talking about? Iron Man one? It would be cool if Jessica Drew as Spiderwoman was in the new Captain America movie if HYDRA is in it.

There will be DIFFERENT deleted scenes on the bonus disc in the Phase two box set out on Dec 8.

In the commentary the director said the first cut was over 3 hours....

Hate to revive a dead thread, but Shane Black did an interesting interview with Uproxx. Highlights:

- Killian was meant to be a woman. Someone at Marvel HQ (presumably Ike) vetoed this, saying that the action figures wouldn't sell. (Were there even Killian toys?)

- All Hail The King was made as an "apology" to fans.

- They weren't expecting such an angry response to the twist. Nobody thought the Mandarin was as iconic as the Joker etc., so didn't think fans would mind the change. Black only wanted to please the fans, now realises "they just wanted to see the magic rings shoot lasers".

- Black emphasised that Feige wasn't the problem; his input was good. "Kevin Feige is the guy who gets it right."

- Stéphanie Szostak and Rebecca Hall originally had much larger roles; presumabley also cut because women don't sell in Ike's eyes.

Full interview is on Uproxx.

So old Ike strikes again did he. So was Killian meant to be a woman, or was the main villain just supposed to be. Because I've said repeatedly that I think that, if they had to do a twist, making Maya Hansen the main villain would have been more interesting.

And yeah, he clearly still doesn't get why so many people didn't like the twist, and the condescension isn't helping. Also Mr. Black, the rings AREN'T MAGIC!! They're alien tech.

Such a shame, these things definitely could have helped the movie.

The Mandarin thing really did blew out of hand because Marvel was false marketing their movie, where as someone like Zemo isn't receiving the same kind of outrage and i'd wager that has to do with Marvel never having Zemo in the marketing for Civil War.

Knowing Tony, it would've been interesting to see a main female villain.

It's biggest sin for me personally was building up Sir Ben Kingsley, both in the marketing and the first half of the movie, to be this really creepy, menacing, mysterious villain, only to then pull the rug out and replace him with a far less menacing and interesting villain.

Whereas with Zemo, they never really try to hide that fact that he's the main villain. You know that, it's just his motives that are the question mark. Speaking of which, Killian's motives a]were kind of generic and bland as well imo.

It's usually pretty interesting whenever he tangles with Madame Masque in the comics (especially since she's also an ex-lover of his). And that's one of the reasons why Maya Hansen (although not the only reason) would have been more interesting as a main villain. And it'd have been much more surprising than Killian, who was obviously up to no good from the first scene that he reappears in the present-day plot.

I didn't like the reveal at first, but I've come to embrace it on repeat viewings. Its not true to the comic, but I like what Black had to say in doing so. Plus, you guys got the real Mandarin coming down the pipeline eventually

Black was probably thinking of Arthur Clarke when he said they were magic. Any tech that's sufficiently alien is as good as magic.

If it was Madame Masque that got changed, I would've cared. As it is, I don't care that they kept Killain as a male. He IS a male in the comics anyway. Or was.

Mandarin with magic rings? lol, I'm glad they changed it. They need someone who actually knows Mandarin to do Mandarin.

Mel Gibson? I'd love for him to take over directing duties. He and Downey are a great match together. Also if he were to be a villain, say Mandarin, I wouldn't care if they white-washed him, because it's Mel freaking Gibson.

Well the rings aren't magical (they're alien technology), so it would seem that Black doesn't understand Mandarin that well if he cannot even get a basic detail like that right.

And given how the main threat was glowey lava people with their random grab-bag of fire powers, I don't buy that alien tech was too "out there" for this movie.

Also Maya Hansen was the main villain of the Extremis arc that this movie is (very loosely) based on, whereas Killian shows up for like a page in order to kill himself and set the plot in motion. So her being the main villain would have worked on that level to, and they wouldn't have wasted Rebecca Hall's talents in a completely superfluous role.

I don't think he wanted to waste time on explaining which aliens they came from, in addition to the Extremis powers....and of course, there's what Arthur Clarke had to say on magic and advanced technology that's not given a hard SF level of background.

The moment he said Mandarin was a racist stereotype character I already knew he didn't know anything about him. Just because it was racist upon inception doesn't mean that's how it stayed. If you go by that you can't ever use any character created in the golden and even silver age for many cases.
Anyway. He made the movie he wanted to make and went along his merry way, which is good if he's going to have this attitude towards the Marvel fans.
We don't need him to stay in the MCU with that mentality.
