Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

I think it's pretty clear The Joker thinks he's in the right here. They're painting Thomas Wayne as a corporate villain, and The Joker as some kind of antihero. At least that's what the trailers are presenting. Makes sense since it's from his perspective.

I think he said that there are preconceptions about this movie that are completely wrong.
I have to give Philips props already I remember when I heard he was directing this so went and checked his stuff and I had a lot of reservations.

Plenty of great comedy's like Road Trip, Starsky & Hutch, Hangover 1-3 and Old School. But I can't say that inspired much confidence in him taking on The Joker but im happy to hold my hands up and admit I was wrong.

I'm curious as to how much this will be a comedy, or a dark comedy, VS a drama.

Do we have any info on De Niro's character?

He is Murray Franklin, a talk show host.

Robert De Niro Talks 'Joker' & Says He Would Have Discussed Reprising His 'King Of Comedy' Role For The DC Film

For those not aware, De Niro not only stars in “The King of Comedy” as the mentally unstable comedian Rupert Pupkin, but also appears as a late-night talk show host/comedian in the upcoming “Joker.” But according to a new interview with IndieWire, the similarities between Pupkin and his “Joker” character aren’t as overt as you might be expecting.

“There’s a connection, obviously, with the whole thing,” said De Niro. “But it’s not as a direct connection as the character I’m playing being Rupert many years later as a host.”

He added, “If they would’ve proposed that to me, I would’ve said, ‘That’s interesting, maybe we’ll try to do that.’ But by making this type of film, it is connected in a way, as you’ll see.”

If the trailer is truly representative, there won't be any straight-up comedy. Even when he was running awkwardly, it mostly served to make him look like a hopelessly square societal reject rather than being outright funny. I think all the comedy portions will be dark, which I like, and that the trailer feels like more of drama. The "dark-comedy" aspects again just illustrate how he doesn't mesh with most (any?) other people, which is a sad and isolating thing.

I don't want all this story to be just one mad person's imagination, that would be awful way to end the movie, I really hope that they are not going there, but looking at Arkham Hospital in the trailer makes me uncomfortable for this very reason.

i think either Joker will die, he will inspire the real Joker, or it could end with Joker in arkham telling his story that we may not even be sure is what happened.

"It's all in his mind, it never really happened", is what I don't want to hear.
Maybe not, but telling a story that we may not even know is true is something the Joker would do. Still, i'm not really sure if thats even what they are gonna do. I have a strange feeling he won't end up dying though

I think The Joker will kill young Bruce, and then also die at the end.

There's no reason for him to kill Bruce.

Well if he hates Thomas Wayne he could do it as an act of vengeance.

I do agree with the theory that this movie will portray him as a kind of anti-hero. Based on the trailer it looks like he is a decent guy with a mom he loves, just trying to do his humble clown/comedian act, and everyone around him treats him like crap. Probably loses his mother in some tragic way. Adding to the empathy. Then he snaps and lashes out at all the a-holes around him.

When has that ever actually been used in a movie? The "It was all in his head" twist is something people are always saying they hate, yet it never actually seems to be used in movies. I can't remember any recent examples.

I think Joker directly approaches the people he wants to target, to get attention and theatricality and also he's about taking chances even if that means he can fail. Going behind someone's back to get revenge cannot be ruled out but I don't think it's Joker's usual modus operandi.

Inception.

it's not recent but Total Recall and Usual Suspects.

Total Recall doesn't give a straight answer. Usual Suspects fits, though.

He obviously inspires Bruce Wayne to become The Joker. :o
You joke, but I do have a gut feeling by the end of this story they’ll do something major with canon which irrefutably places this film in elseworlds territory.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s intended to make it difficult for anyone to integrate into a shared universe. Or want to.

I think we're already in Elseworld territory, when we have a Joker movie where Thomas Wayne is alive and well.

I suppose, I’m just thinking more along the lines of a finite arc for this Joker, with no easy path to follow-ups or integrations.

With regards to Thomas though, I still think there’s a twist of how these events eventually play out.
