Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

I'm honestly a bit sad that this is getting panned by the U.S critics. Wish they were more objective in their reviews. I'm still gonna see it no matter what, but the folks that don't follow this kind of stuff as much as we do are gonna look at the RT score and get the wrong idea, and I don't want that.

Dont worry too much, if you are afraid about Box office. Really panned movie like the Suicide Squad were box office hits...

Now, audience reaction is gonna be interesting, this is not a movie for everyone

Panned is a bit strong.

I kind of half expected this from the US critics anyway as based on Twitter, a lot had their mind made up.

Me too, but I was still hoping that they would change their mind after the Golden Lion win lol.

Alas, it has only made them dig their heels in even more!

But... The score is still fresh....

And it's not like they can just change the Crític consensus at the last minute, unless they have before and I wasn't aware...

It's getting panned because it is a dark movie and like it or not when you make a comic book movie some people go to see it to forget the real world. Not to see themselves in the movie.

At this point when you go see a Joaquin Phoenix movie it's a safe bet that it will be pretty ****ing dark. The last "fun movie" he did was Brother Bear.

So basically critics love everything but the story and the story and thats a dealbreaker for a lot of them.

This was always billed as a grim R-rated character study about one of the darkest characters in CBM lore so I highly doubt anyone was under any allusion about this being light escapist entertainment.

We should probably wait and see the movie before we start trying to figure out why, like all movies, it just isn’t connecting with some.

Well, some of those critics already made up their minds about the movie before seeing it, so I can't exactly take their opinions seriously.

I understand and fully agree. Still like it or not if it's a comic book movie it's not supposed to be too dark in a lot of peoples minds.

I do not find it surprising in today's social environment people are evaluating a piece of art through their own social context prisms. It is quickly becoming the norm. People are protesting fast food chicken restaurants, for Pete's sake. They are unfriending people on social media sites. It is becoming all about is something or someone expressing the "correct" way of seeing the world.

You throw a movie like JOKER into the public forum during such a time, it would be amazing if they did base their critiques on just the quality of the film.

I don't think you can say this movie is getting "panned".

Three years ago DC could only get scores in the mid 20s.

This is the third best critically received DC film since The Dark Knight Rises (in terms of tomatometer). In 5 reviews time, it could be "Certified Fresh". It has an average critic rating of 7.84 on RT (and even 7.43 from Top Critics). Wonder Woman has an average critic rating of 7.6 from critics. Shazam has an average critic score of 7.29.

"Panned" is a strong (and wrong) word for a film that won the Golden Lion (a prestigious film critic award).

If this does well we don't want any slippery slopes where they think we can get a Kite Man solo.

This dropping to 72 on Metacritic is kind of a bummer, I know it's just other people's opinions but it looked like for a while it'd be an 80 on there

I'm pumping the brakes on the film's Oscar chances for now. We'll have a better idea in a month once the movie releases, but right now I'm getting a pretty clear vibe that this is going to be incredibly divisive with American critics. I don't think that's going to stop once the film's hit with 300+ reviews. It's already dropped from 87% to 77% on RT in just two days, and it's already borderline yellow on MC with just 21 reviews.

The Academy doesn't really go in for dark, nihilistic movies nowadays. The last one I can clearly recall is No Country for Old Men in 2007, but that film had glowing critical acclaim to back itself up. So here we have a dark, nihilistic comic book movie (let's be clear, not every Academy member is going to get over that), with middling reviews. This movie really needed the reviews to bolster its chances. I'm not so sure now.

In the end, if Joker gets a Best Picture nomination, I think Phoenix wins Actor. If Joker misses on Best Picture, Actor will go to Driver.

No Country for Old Men was also directed by the Coen Brothers, critically acclaimed film makers. Todd Phillips may have overstretched himself for this and NA critics are seeing that.

Anne Thompson & the trades loving this movie makes me think that it's still gonna get a Best Picture nom, and the Lion helps too. Also an MC in the 60's would make this borderline yellow, it's still above 70. This isn't Jojo Rabbit where it went from an Oscar front-runner to not even being in contention after reviews

I suppose it's worth considering that the movie really hasn't gotten into the hands of the "basic," mainstream critics yet. That might help it.

Can't say I am surprised by this reaction. As soon as I saw some of the early, highbrow reviews, I knew it was coming down. At least it is getting a good, overall score, with a lot of praise, as opposed to the universal trouncing that BvS received. It is kind of annoying that all of the MCU flicks get a pass, no matter how safe and insignificant some of those offerings are, whereas, if someone tries something different with another brand, they are ready to pounce on it. Of course, I have not seen the movie, so I don't know for certain whether I will love it or not, however, I did like BvS quite alot, so, there is that ...

Well this thread made a 180. From Oscars to critics suck real fast. I don't do highbrow cinema so this movie definitely isnt for my "90's action movies were peak cinema" tastes. But disagreeing with critics before you see the movie is crazy. Literally someone said critics have already made up their minds about the movie... but the person criticizing the critics hasn't seen the movie.
