Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

OMG! This movie IS going to make a billion dollars! Going back to what I was talking about earlier. I estimated $40 million internationally for the whole week this past week. It made $62 million. This thing continues to drop less than half each week!

Lets say that from here on out it drops halfway internationally each week like in my estimate.

  • 31 million
  • 15 million
  • 7.5 million
  • 4 million
  • 2 million
  • 1 million
that adds up to 60.5 Million.

15 to 20million more domestic is locked. That is definitely happening. Let's go with a conservative $15million more domestic(And that is definitely conservative). add 15 and 60 to 934.4.

That is past a BIllie baby! Billie is locked bro @8ulk87 dude! I think Billie is locked now. What do you think?

$934 mil?

Damn, a billion might be in the cards after all
Its already a done deal.

$66 million to go. 1 Billion is a lock at this point. The holds it's having are amazing. Gitesh called it weeks ago. It'll probably cross the mark by the middle of next week.
Its probably going to be under $990 mil after next Sunday but who knows with this movie anything can happen.

Will add another 35M from North America so 1B is locked.
Indeed.

Joker going towards a billion like...

The actual shot in the movie where he's walking directly towards the camera with a Kubrick stare was one of the best moments in the whole film for me. I think Phoenix used his eyes the best of any actor to have played the part. The brief look he gave Murray when he fished the joke book out of his jacket was incredibly disturbing.

Will there be a 'Joker' sequel? Joaquin Phoenix shares his thoughts

In all of his years of acting, stretching back to when he was 8 years old, Joaquin Phoenix has never done a sequel. And heading into “Joker,” he didn’t expect that to change.

A grim, gritty take on the origin of arguably the comic-book world’s most iconic villain, director Todd Phillips’ film was designed as a standalone story that would exist — in every conceivable way — outside of the DC cinematic universe. That was a major part of the appeal to Phoenix, who had turned down earlier offers to star in comic-book movies out of a concern that he’d find himself sucked into the maw of a commercial machine.

“I guess the fear was that you’d get locked into doing something repeatedly that you don’t really care about, that doesn’t motivate you or excite you,” Phoenix said during an interview for an upcoming cover story in The Envelope. “Part of the whole attraction to me [of ‘Joker’] was there was no expectation. I didn’t sign a deal to do [more movies]. It was a one-off.”

Now that the pre-release controversy has abated and the film has become a box office smash — earning some $850 million worldwide to date and setting a record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time — those gears of commerce are surely turning in the minds of Warner Bros. executives. Still, Phoenix — whose turn as troubled would-be comedian turned murderous supervillain Arthur Fleck has landed him at the heart of this year’s best actor Oscar race — insists he and Phillips would never do a follow-up simply because Hollywood logic demands it.

“I wouldn’t just do a sequel just because the first movie is successful,” he said. “That’s ridiculous.”

That’s not to say Phoenix is completely opposed to a sequel, though. While they were making “Joker,” Phoenix says he and Phillips, previously best known for directing hit comedies like the “Hangover” trilogy, were mulling over the idea of further plumbing Fleck’s complex psyche.

“Long before the release or before we had any idea if it would be successful, we talked about sequels,” Phoenix said. “In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, ‘Todd, can you start working on a sequel? There’s way too much to explore.’ It was kind of in jest — but not really.”

In fact, at one point during filming Phoenix had posters mocked up with the Joker inserted into various old movies as a tongue-in-cheek way of showing Phillips what might be possible.

“I basically said, ‘You could take this character and put him in any movie,’ ” Phoenix said. “So I did a photo shoot with the on-set photographer and we made posters where I Photoshopped Joker into 10 classic movies: ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’ ‘Raging Bull,’ ‘Yentl ...’ ” He laughs. “If you see it, you’re like, ‘Yeah, I’d watch that movie.’ ‘Yentl’ with Joker? That would be … amazing!”

“I definitely remember the ‘Yentl’ one,” said Phillips, who co-wrote “Joker” with Scott Silver, laughing. “Another one was ‘Forrest Gump.’ ‘The Hangover’ was even one of them.”

As for the potential of a true sequel, Phillips agrees that he and Phoenix would only do one if there was a compelling creative reason.

“We haven’t talked about it a ton,” the director said. “We’ve only talked about the fact that if we ever did one — and I’m not saying we are because right now we’re not — it couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime.’ That just doesn’t interest us. It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does.

“Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, outside of all the noise and mishegoss of the last month and a half. I think the reason why it’s resonating is what’s going on underneath the movie. So many movies are about the spark, and this movie is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting.”

Spoilers beware in the second half of the article for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

Yep this movie is still crushing it like it's no one else's business. I never expected it to be at $930M+ already, but that pretty much locks up $1B+ now. Who knows just how high it can go if Warner Bros decides to keep around a bit longer like during the holidays or even a re-release by the end of the year if they really want to push that Oscar buzz which I'm sure they will, because they would be foolish not too.

Absolutely incredible!

Well any chance Terminator had of stopping Joker is dead. The movie is awful anyways but it is straight up bombing last I saw. (especially overseas) Joker's legs should still hold...

You sound like Gordon dude

Batman: No...this cannot be, Gotham needs a hero....

Gordon: No.....*TDK theme kicks in

It'd take a miracle for this film NOT to make a billion now lol

So happy it's doing it without even touching China, showing studios you don't have to hijack creative freedom for little bit of return of RMB. And there are a lot of fans wanting to see it over there too, so no blames on Hollywood. Hopefully this will start to become a trend soon.

I think Joker will be a big force for the award seasons I think starting from Jan? No reason it can't stay in theater till Christmas, I think Wonder Woman had incredible legs and stayed from early June to early September 2017....thing is after the Oscars if it wins something big they'll reap more rewards if it still plays in theaters...maybe they will take a break in Jan/early Feb and bring it back if that's the case?

Or the award season might just help its blu ray sales.

Wow, the money is still rolling in. So much more than expected.

I'm amazed that Joaquin actively said he wants to do a sequel, Todd seems like someone who's ultra-conservative at answering the press, but we've heard so many celebrities saying one thing and totally do another (Jas as Aquaman, Affleck directing Batman etc)

I do wonder how they're gonna do a sequel if it becomes a hit at the awards as well, has there been artsy films that wins big and makes sequels? It's only gonna go downhill from there lol, they're peaking right now.

I am not sure where they go for a sequel neither, would be interesting to hear their conversation on set, he's the Joker at the end and they don't want him to be just Clown of Prince terrorizing the city....IDW. I heard about a war between him and the Riddler in the comics, like a villains VS film would be quite unique

It would be cool if Todd Phillips made the sequel about Batman battling The Joker, and just called the movie Bat-Man. Since this would be more Elseworld-ish, keep it in the same vein of being ultra grounded, and have Batman be way more realistic than even Nolan's. He wouldn't have a traditional Batsuit, instead, he would have combat boots, kevlar vest, a black trenchcoat instead of a cape, and a leather cowl...short ears. Nothing too fancy. His "Batmobile" would just be something like a 70's black Chevelle SS. Keep it an R rating, and let Todd Phillips do his thing.
