Honestly, the fact that he thinks it being a "Joker" film could hinder it makes me wonder if he already had his mind made up about the movie beforehand. that's a very A-hole thing to do.

From what I'm gathering and know, I think what he is trying to say is that if you're expecting to go see this for "The Joker" you might be disappointed because A) outside of the failed comedian thing it doesn't really borrow much from comics or other material and more of its own thing and B) The actual "Joker" bits are at the end of the third act because 80% of the movie is a character study of a broken man.

It definitely appears that healthiest way to look at this movie is that it takes the barest of bones in terms of The Joker we know from the Batman comics, and spins it right off into something that isn’t really about ‘The Joker’, and is more the story of a man who suffers a colossal psychotic break, and happens to adopt a clown persona due to his day job - which, in and of itself, is quite a fascinating concept, and one I will look forward to seeing.

I do like the idea that Fleck

suffers from a kind of Tourette’s syndrome that makes him laugh. That’s clever.

But the Fleck

and Bruce Wayne are brothers twist is just godawful though. Straight out of bad day time soap operas. Smacks of a ham fisted attempt to be different from Nolan’s ‘Joker as random force of nature’ approach, by tying Fleck in with Wayne at the most personal level. It’s horrible. Super hoping it’s one giant misdirect.

Fleck and Wayne are not brothers. The script views Fleck with a level of contempt, and he inspires a terrorist/militia movement that ends up killing a lot of prominent people. He's a mentally ill man who gets **** on a lot by life throughout the film

I've always preferred the idea that Joker was always evil instead of this "broken man who snapped and had enough of the world", considering he's meant to be... Ya know, a psychopath, and psychopaths are born, not made. However, it's not like it hasn't been done before, so I'll bite my tongue once more and see how it plays out. I'm still hoping it's a little bit of both maybe, ala Walter White.

To be honest I'm mostly interested in this just to see Phoenix's performance. He's my favorite working actor, and Amazon botched his Oscar campaign for You Were Never Really Here so bad (he deserved a nomination way more than Malek & Mortenson imo). Even if this is a divisive film I hope he can at least get awards considerations if he's as good as he's been in the past.
