Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Well, well, what a strange movie going experience that was. Not what I was expecting at all, in some ways.

Needless to say that Phoenix's commitment to the part is outstanding. In fact, the performances are good all round. Also, the cinematography is fabulous. The aesthetic of this Gotham is great. A vast, grubby, sprawling metropolis that feels lived in and real.

But I don’t know... the whole thing felt... quite tame?

I can hardly believe I’m saying that, but from all the buzz in went in expecting a shocking, original, controversial movie. And what I got was a well constructed, but ultimately very predictable character drama.

Colour me amazed. The most shocking thing about this movie is how shocking it isn’t!

This isn’t the origin of the clown prince of crime, that’s for certain. It’s the story of a sad little man who takes small but violent acts of revenge on a horrible city, dressed as a clown and carrying a hand gun.

A perfectly decent movie... but not one that is the groundbreaking game changer some have claimed it to be!

7/10.
You got got by the twitter media pal. I felt the same after watching it. I couldn't understand what the big deal was.

But I think the more you sit on it the more you'll love it.

Not sure. It didn’t spark any kind of visceral reaction in me, so not sure if it’s a grower. But I did enjoy Phoenix’s performance!

This is a movie you have to analyze a lot to understand what it's trying to say. Like i said before, it's more than a Joker origin story, it's a full satire of America's society and the lack of empathy and selflove.

Gosh I felt the same. There's a small part in me that actually wishes it was the controversial thing that the critics were talking about. So it's like in a weird way the critics were overhyping the movie for me :funny:

It’s weird, isn’t it? I say through the whole thing waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it never does.

What this movie is, is a perfectly decent character drama with some social commentary that just so happens to feature a version of a famous comic character. Nothing less, nothing more.

Yeah. But I do agree with the others that it will get better and better the more you think about it. I hope you'll feel the same. It's just the initial reaction that wasn't what I expected, but I did still like it a lot.

so i guess it was not as violent and disturbing as something like Man Bites Dog?
some critics made it sound like it was.

Bloggers and critics are acting like this was going to spark some "toxic white male incel" revolution. The entire incel claims towards this movie, or even how violent and disturbing this movie is, were blown wayyyyyy out of proportion. It was all just manufactured controversy for the sake of it. It was all clickbait and political. If you buy into it, you're a sucker.

I loved this movie, but it's not sparking a violent revolution, nor is it that violent. Just judge it for what it is. Don't worry about all of this manufactured nonsense, because it's just that: nonsense.

Absolutely not. Nowhere near Man Bits Dog.

This is a standard studio film. It’s only a 15 in the UK!

don't worry, i live in Japan so i don't have to get caught up in controversy lol

i don't know if i should be glad to hear that cause i love those crazy movies from europe like Funny Games or Man Bits Dog lol

Not particularly violent, but enough that with the high tension moments and slight psychological thriller moments could be described as disturbing. I meant it not in a bad nor hyperbolic way.

Ok I'm just home from seeing it. I'm going to post some quick fire thoughts and general feelings. I loved it. I really loved it. Its about as believable a tale as you could get on how someone could turn into something like the Joker. Phoenix was terrific, as I fully expected him to be. Its a dark haunting performance. This movie still managed to intrigue, and even surprise me despite my knowing everything about Joker as a character because it was going into its own self made territory. Without going into spoilers, people will know what I'm talking about when it comes to certain revelations regarding Arthur's mother. That was a big surprise.

The cinematography, the score were all wonderful. The movie is so depressing, but also so intriguing that you're hooked on this miserable ride that is Arthur Fleck's life. Regarding how it feels as a take on the Joker, I never felt like I was watching a Joker movie, but a Taxi Driver type tale about someone who could become as crazy as the Joker. When he finally became Joker, the most Joker-esque part was the talk show segment, which had many elements lifted from DKR. I loved that.

As for all the controversy this movie was getting about violence, I am stunned that it has happened. Talk about making an issue out of nothing. This movie was TAME with the violence. So tame. There was only one scene that had some proper graphic violence. Just one. This movie is not even a contender for most violent comic book movie. The likes of Deadpool and Watchmen are far more violent.

The only thing about this movie that I disliked was the ending regarding
the whole thing apparently just being a dream in Arthur's head while he's in a psych ward. Felt like a huge cop out. Very disappointing.

Overall terrific movie. Plan on seeing it at least two more times. I hope it makes a killing at the box office, wins all the awards, and spits right in the eye of all the drama queens who have been stupidly criticizing it for being violent, or glorifying violence.

I am so baffled by all the controversy. Truly never known anything like it. I feel like I must have been watching a different film.

This is a well crafted, brilliantly performed character study. Nothing less. Nothing more.

So glad you loved it, dude! It really is a fantastic movie. I plan on seeing it a second time this sunday! Such a well crafted, and well told character study. And I agree, the talk show segment was my favorite part as well! The entire film is almost like a simmering pot in that it just keeps going and going until it overflows. It's beautiful in every way.

My final score for the movie is 9/10. easily one of the best comic book films in recent years.
