The Joker Thread - Part 1

Leto is a good actor outside of his Joker performance. If fans need a boost from another performance to get them interested in Leto's Joker again, then that's hilarious.

Hope they release that Blade Runner trailer soon, interested to see what Leto does with a director like Denis Villeneuve.
It drops tomorrow.

Have you not seen the internet since August?

People aren't saying he was just bad in Suicide Squad. The narrative has now shifted that he's just a bad actor in general. Look up some of the reaction to him being in Blade Runner.

Exactly. I'm sure it doesn't help Leto is currently suing Warner Brothers in the 9th Circuit court regarding his TMZ controversy. Dude could've just sued TMZ & the producers but he also inexplicably decided to go after WB in the lawsuit. He lost the local court suit and appealed and refilled with 9th Circuit. He's out for blood.

I didn't like Leto's Joker, but I blame the writing for that a lot more than the acting. I mean, the concept just seemed off from the start. He was more like a gangster with a fetish than the Joker. He didn't even make any jokes!

Leto's Joker and his insufferable on-set behavior were the butt of many, many jokes that extended outside the superhero fan community. I'm sure there are people out there who enjoyed his 8 minutes of screen time, but nowhere near enough to pretend that the mere discussion of a recast is out of the question. Do I think it will happen? Not really, but who knows. It's clear that WB does not really have a plan at this point. But a recast is on the table, and I'd honestly be for it if the alternative is a continuation of the nonsense we saw in Suicide Squad.

Just saw the new #BladeRunner2049 trailer. Visually mind blowing. Slick, creepy and Jared Leto looks weird as all hell, which is a good sign

Funny feeling after this movie the theme will be "Maybe Leto just needs good material"

Its going to take some positive buzz to get more people on board with him back in the DCEU..

Leto is a great actor and his involvement with Squad absolutely derailed his career. Of course the recast can happen but I bet WB is not gonna be the side that wants that most. It's in Leto's best interest to get out unless he really thinks he can turn it around but that a risky move, you never know how the film is gonna turn out and after all they already burned him and reduced one of his performances to cameo. He doesn't need this.

He really doesn't. Now I'm starting to think that he might walk.

More reactionary hyperbole.

Because he didn't have a satisfying turn as The Joker, now he's a bad actor?

god willing

good actor, but unless his portrayal is going to massively change the next time he's on screen, I'd rather not see the character at all.

Say no more.

I'm really surprised Zack didn't want to handle the Joker himself.

Surely he would have given us something that at least looked better.

Believe it or not I think Snyder does a great job of creating the characters. Now he might not always use them to the best of their ability, but the concept is usually great. Even with Lex Luthor. The idea was great, but it was just the wrong actor.

Ayer seemed to be throwing a lot at the wall with creation of this Joker hoping something sticked. Or hoped Leto could just elevate it beyond what he created. That obviously didn't work out because its divisive.

I think someone here suggested it, but it would be cool if the Joker just changes his look every movie. He's very different every time. Instead of being a collage of things with no structure that turns out to be a mess for some people. Again even I though I liked it.

Leto did good with what he was given. Would like to see him come back under better direction and better material

His idea for Luthor sucked.

He got paid just under $7 million for SS and I don't see that price tag changing for future appearances, especially if he's more involved than he was in SS. Money does indeed talk.

In addition to that, I can't imagine he'd want to pass up another opportunity to tackle the character with a more fluid direction and better material.

He'll be back.

What did Ayer throw at a wall in creating this version of The Joker, exactly?

The only major visual change he made to the character was the tattoos.

And tattoos, brands and glyphs were a visual motif throughout SUICIDE SQUAD, so that isn't exactly "throwing something at a wall", it's a deliberate design choice throughout an entire production.

So what did Ayer "throw in there" that wasn't found somewhere in the comics as part of the character's...character?

His vision for Joker was latino gangmember. He has a fetish. (along with tattoos)

The Joker was latino? Could have fooled me.

Regardless, this creative decision, to make the Joker into a gangster (which, in the Golden and Silver Ages, he very much was, mind you), was a deliberate, calculated move. The approach informs the way he acts, dresses, and his very physical appearance.

This kind of thorough character portrayal does not fit the definition of "throwing things at a wall and hoping they stick."

Yeah this was not a random idea they came up with. This was something they planned with the ugly tattoos, bling bling jewelry, generic open shirt and black pants look etc. But it doesn't fit into any gangster theme with the Joker from the comics. Couldn't be further from it.

If anything they were stealing elements from other villains e.g. Joker running a nightclub. It doesn't even make sense with him. If Joker owns a nightclub then the law and Batman know where to find him at any time. He's a wanted criminal. If they wanted a nightclub owner villain who is untouchable with the law then they should have done The Penguin and his infamous Iceberg Lounge.

I've said it before, the core problem with the "Cartel Gangster Look" is that they played it straight. The Joker doesn't look like he's mocking the gangsters he's styled after, which is a must for the character. It should be exaggerated in a way that makes the style look, ahem, clownish. It should also go with similarly exaggerated and mocking mannerisms.

Instead, we got. . . that.

It was a deliberate, calculated move that entirely missed the mark. He was a joke, and certainly not in any way they would have intended.

It's so strange that Luthor, Joker, Batman, Superman...four of the most important characters feel more like different characters altogether in the DCEU, in disguise.

That whole Joker is probably Grayson thing again. :sus
