The Joker Thread - Part 1

Okay, everybody, I have instructions from the Admins. Neither tagged nor untagged spoilers will be allowed in this thread. Please discuss all potential spoilers or leaks about this character in the Leaks and Spoilers thread. Thanks!

Whether you agree with him or not let's all hug it out and just go back to talking about the funny man

Whoever is playing the role, I hope this is the kind of look they go for. No smeared make-up, no greasy hair, only light scarring. We’ve had so many cinematic reinventions of the character over the last decade-plus, I hope Reeves aims for something mostly classic where Joker is concerned.

Yep. Something classic comic book Joker look would be refreshing and the best approach imo. You could argue that we've already seen that with Nicholson, but that was in the 80s and there's still scope to do accurate but different. Just have someone younger and lankier and that will do the trick imo.

Personally I can get behind chemical scarring. It would be a good way to differentiate this version from the last few onscreen Jokers

I just don't want another Joker with a "message" who want to make a point about something. I want Joker who is insane, disturbing, sinister, malicious, obsessive and funny, I want him to be scary.

Cameron Monaghan really capture the clown element of Joker in Gotham. You can think whatever you want about the show itself but he was the closest thing to the Joker from Batman TAS which i love.

Cameron was just hella tryhard. As all of the "J" named characters. But Jeremiah definitely had the drip to him for sure and the dark hair with shades of green definitely made me think BTAS

"Jeremiah" was the only version of the character in that show that was interesting because it was something fresh and unique. Closer to Hannibal Lecter or Frank Miller's Joker, a kind of dead-serious version that's never been done live action before. Not the pale Heath Ledger impression he did earlier or the Uncle Fester monstrosity at the end.

Gotham was really good show that fully embraced comic book campiness, I'm gonna bet that most people who criticize it watched maybe 1 season. These days everything have to be perfect or matched certain aspect that are popular at the time to be good enough, otherwise it's completely bad.

I'm not even a bit surprised that no one here can appreciate even a single thing about this show, but then again, everyone here already think that Battinson will be the best Batman, Kravitz will be the best Catwoman, and the whole movie will be the best batman movie ever... till the next one of course.

I just wanna say to all the good little boys and girls out there

^^ This is why you don't. do. drugs.
Gotham was good. It was cheesy, but it had the best Gordon and Alfred yet. As an Elseworlds story, it’s a ton of fun. Far better than the other Batman-themed shows (Batwoman & Birds of Prey). As far as I’m concerned, the only valid Batman-related shows are Batman ‘66 and Gotham.

Also, a more nuanced approach would be to only do some drugs.

Then they just kinda threw it all away and made him act all "KRAYZEEE XD" again anyway

Agreed, I can get behind this. As a different interpretation/elseworlds story, it works just fine. I think when it comes to these characters that everybody loves, they like it their way and tend not to have an open mind to enjoy other takes on the character. For me, I enjoy it all, but I'm not critical at all with these things, so that probably makes a difference.

Not watched Gotham tbh. Seemed a bit cheesy soap opera in the way tv series can be sometimes.

I do agree on not wanting a Joker with a message though definitely. Tbh that's been an issue with comic stories featuring him too - wanting to be the next The Killing Joke. Yet some of the best Joker stories are not grand world destroying events nor have a philosophical point or Batman/Joker mirrors if each other stuff. Like, The Laughing Fish/Sign of The Joker, Joker's first story in Batman 1, and plenty more. So, it's possible to do a great Joker story like that. Oh, and yes, I also would like a slightly demonic vibe - that plays into the somewhat gothic elements Joker had early on in the 40s e.g. hideout under a grave and somehow being able to survive (or even be revived!) from various situations that should kill him. Don't think this has ever been portrayed in live action really so that would be new.

Gotham is awesome. It’s a comedy/parody and works very well as such.
They can't have their cake and eat it too on that one. One minute they wanna go for camp, the next they wanna go dark. It's like they took the Nolan, Burton and Schumacher films just to roll them all up into a ball and **** out whatever the hell that show was lol. The tone was so all over the place that I just don't buy the parody excuse

I want this next Joker to, even is his face is terrifying, wear actual neat lipstick here. Nothing super smeared.

The tonal cluster**** is exactly why it’s so funny!

I remember when Gotham first aired, thinking Gordon was miscast. Everyone else on the show felt like slightly grittier versions of the Adam West Batman, so their acting was heightened, but with Gordon, his acting was much more grounded, and created a clash in tone.

I thought that was fine as it was Gordon entering the slightly more goofy yet messed up world. He was essentially the audience's eye as it gets its first exposure.
