The Joker Thread - Part 1

Adam Driver
Ben Foster
Caleb Landy-Jones
Lakeith Stanfield
Rami Malek
Will Poulter
Great list

Just saw Malek in the new 007 trailer and it got me back to thinking that he’d be a great Joker

Throw Kieran Culkin in there too.

I don't see Lakeith Stanfield getting the role when he's so openly gunning for it, honestly. Feels like a Tyrese Gibson/Paul Walter Hauser situation.

Alternate take: He'd make a terrible Joker, and you guys are just tossing around names of actors whose work you've seen recently.

Changing the race of probably Gotham's most heinous villain and making him a black man would be a controversial quagmire I doubt the studio would want to stick itself in.
Can you go deeper on this?

Its a matter of when they use Joker, not if. Wouldn’t be surprised if they save him for the third movie. I think it would be a great surprise if they cast him in secret and had a surprise cameo in Arkham Asylum in the second movie and set him up got the third movie. telltale did a good reimagining of Joker and I think it could adapt well to film.

I can imagine the outrage brigade complaining if they “white washed” Lakeith by putting the clown makeup on him. Or if he went in the chemical bath, that the movie was saying that his Blackness had to be washed away and “turned white.”

The only complaining will be from fanboys who don't want to see a black Joker. "What next, a white Luke Cage?", and other idiotic comments.

I see no reason the Joker can't be black, and I'd be willing to bet that the casting of a black actor would be largely celebrated by the black community. Because the Joker is an iconic role for an actor to tackle, a role of stature in a major Hollywood movie. Preventing black actors from taking such roles because you think it might create a controversy is terribly misguided.

Yet another reason why I think the studio would shy away from it. First by race-swapping perhaps Gotham's most evil villain and making him black, then "whitewashing" him with makeup or chemical bleaching, it'd just be stepping into a minefield of potential controversy from multiple directions unnecessarily.

I personally don’t care if they want to race-bend most roles if the actor is a good fit with the character. I can just imagine that there will be outrage from the types who ask for this kind of diversity when a black man’s face is turned white. Does it make sense? No, but they rarely do.

Art is right. Joker is a highly coveted role that many black actors would only dream of having. The outrage would mostly be from the types who think a black Joker is the equivalent to a white T'Challa, not black people/the black community. I certainly wouldn't be offended.

It's not like he's being turned into a white man, he's being turned into a clown- complete with green hair and red lips. Anybody can be a clown. And it's not like Joker is the only representation of black people either, as Gordon is black too. He represents law & order in it's purest form in contrast to Joker. Counterbalance

Breaking news

Lakeith Stanfield white washes self in hopes of being white washed in Hollywood production.

I mean, I'm not dismissing your concerns. I have no doubt that some people would get all uppity over the perceived "optics."

But... the character falls into a vat of chemicals and has his skin bleached. And The Joker is essentially a clown, and clowns have historically had white faces. So it's just one of those things where you let the offended parties be offended.

Like it's either that or...

Like, what? Make his skin extra dark/pure black? Which kinda ruins the whole thing of him being Joker?

Yeah, Lakeith is great and all, but like I've said before, the only people who actually want this (including him probably tbh) are those who just wanna say "y@$$ bL@Q j0kUr!!! Y@$$$ iNcL00$iOn!" and change any white character in existence and I'm just not down with that mentality.
