The Joker Thread - Part 1

giphy.gif

I know we've already talked about it and I had an epiphany. We've talked about perma white skin or smile and I thought about how the Bond film Skyfall handled Javier Bardem's character. He had some apparatus in his mouth that made him look normal, then he takes it out for M and his face crumbles. With what we've seen from the world Reeve's is building with Penguin and Riddler, he's apparently going for that grounded realism. So maybe to get some cooky smile, the Joker in this world uses some retainer type thing that this actor Veidt used for the perma smile, to keep up his damaged face...

I'm totally fine with his face being messed up but dentures feels like a bridge too far for me. I like you but I'm givin this one a mildly hard pass.

Almost done Queen's Gambit (which is killer by the way) and I think I would be down for Harry Melling for Joker tbh. I know some agreed that he is rather "impish" looking but I think he could really nail it if he performed in a way that was more confident. He's usually cast as nerds or weirdo people but I'm sure with the right clothes and performance it could feel good. He definitely works moreso on the creepy side though.

I'd prefer Jamie Bell on a purely aesthetic level though. He's got just enough "unique" features while still being pretty traditionally attractive. Fancy Joker would be cool

I like a clean Joker but I wouldn't consider him to be "attractive". That's like Tumblr speak to me, personally; but I get what you're saying.

However, I feel like Reeves' Joker is going to look rather grotesque

Eh, I dunno Heath Ledger was a very attractive guy and it's clear even when he's grimey in the makeup. It works as part of his intelligence and devilishness, you know instantly he's just on another level to everybody else character wise. It doesn't have to be flaunted like Leto Joker or even acknowledged, but I think elegance could be really cool for this take. If they want more of a "weird" Joker then go Harry Melling. For more "elegant" go Gyllenhaal or Jamie Bell. Joker being a complete loser in Joaquin movie isn't very interesting to me. I find it more interesting when he's a master manipulator with people, and I think the aesthetic of him can play into that. If he's too grotesque he'll just feel like a freak show and you'll wonder how he could cultivate any followers or gang members or whatever.

I'd honestly much rather have CLJ for that "weird" take.

But regardless, even if he's not a guy in makeup this time around (hopefully), I still feel like they'll be going for that realistic-yet- ever so sliiiightly-stylized look for Joker like with Batman himself and Catwoman, Penguin, maybe Riddler. So I'm expecting something more along the lines of ASHOSE or Arkham City for the look of his face. He's probably not going to look super trim but not like a hobo either.

I'd imagine after he gets out he probably hastily applies gel into his hair, very uneven, possibly with a Bermejo-inspired hairstyle.

Which is where the 80s suits and Bermejo outfits come into the picture for me. I feel like that could be a way to make him stand out along with showy AND silent horror film-esque mannerisms. That way he can still stand out while still fitting into the universe Reeves has created.

Harry Melling would be a better, more interesting Joker than most of the movie stars who get thrown around in this thread. He would be absolutely amazing as most of the minor Batman villains as well, just has a great vibe for it.

Heath was more handsome to me than any of the guys who've played Batman and it still kinda shows through the makeup but I still have trouble seeing his face as Joker. In some shots, sure, but all his acting choices and the makeup combined really drives the fact it's Heath Ledger out of your mind.

If Keoghan isn't Mad Hatter then get Melling. At the same time, I don't want TOO many of his enemies to be super young (by batvillain standards). However, you also have Penguin, and Joker is usually interpreted as ageless. But that's a concern of mine nonetheless

@SwordOfMorning For sure. Best example is the interrogation scene. I still just can't see him, the eyes just "flicker" and stare in a completely different way and it sells it. Yet you also definitely see his features at the same time, without giving it away. It's really something else. You see the attractiveness beneath the makeup without seeing him, which is neat

I don't think he's going to look like post-murder attempt Mason Verger or anything like that but he's probably not going to be a spring chicken whom teenage girls obsess over on Pinterest and Tumblr.

That Red Hood Gang artwork I keep posting seems ideal for his smile and overall face. Just make his eyes look freaky and that could be a great design for this universe.

Fair enough. I don't really have any need to see a permawhite Joker, so that's probably why my preferences are a bit different. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other but I probably prefer the makeup (which you can hide the actor more). With the permawhite the facial features are definitely more on display. I really liked Joaquin's makeup.

Completely indifferent to makeup/permawhite. Feels like it would only be relevant if you want the acid bath to be part of the story.

Albino skin could be cool (if they wanted to go non makeup) just to differentiate him as being different from other people, but agree. I really hope they avoid an origin story entirely though, that's partly why Heath's was so special imo. I would be perfectly happy with makeup again and him just showing up with zero explanation as to who he is besides his motivations.
