The Last Defenders

I just cannot fathom what all the hullabaloo is over Colossus wearing a speedo (which people actually do) when THERE ARE CHARACTERS WHO WEAR SPEEDOS OVERTOP OF THEIR PANTS.

That is perfectly acceptable in superhero circles.

Would you prefer Batman and Superman stopped wearing pants, either? That'll sure make 'em look "imposing".

Haha, this is a 3 step process!

I suppose.

You never know.

They might come across a cosmic being who only speaks russian and who will destroy the earth unless Pete draws him a pic and lets him watch Pete and Kitty getting busy.

True. Spider-Man once played a football game with some loser kids in a park and coincidentally saved the life of the Watcher whose fate was tied to that game by some goofy green alien. I forget the exact issue.

About the only attributes or skills that Colossus has over She-Hulk that would actually be of use in a fight is he technically did receive some sword training from Nightcrawler, and his organic steel form has sometimes been resistant to some magical attacks, such as against The Adversary. He also doesn't need oxygen, but She-Hulk could just be bright enough to hold her breath if someone tried to gas 'em.

You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?

People don't wear speedos overtop of their clothes. That makes the comic book characters that do INFINITELY weirder than the characters that just wear speedos and nothing else. Regardless of the fasion sense, IT MAKES NO SENSE TO PUT ON A SPEEDO OVERTOP OF YOUR PANTS.

Didn't know that.

If she's like her cousin she has the lung capacity of a whale.

There is a joke there, but I won't make it.

Anyway, in his metal form, Colossus doesn't need air, water, or food. The Handbooks say he couldn't survive long in a vacuum, though (like space). Which seems odd because he is also resistant to heat & cold.

I was just reaching for stuff that he can do that She-Hulk can't. I imagine fans of Wonder Man have to do that every time he is in some roster with Thor, Hercules, and now Sentry.

What I don't understand is why you seem to enjoy Colossus without pants. You even claim it somehow makes him "imposing". It doesn't.

Superheroes where underoo's over their leggings, they're not the same as pants. But that's semantics. Superhero dress styles are by nature "weird" when you compare them to what is outside now. Just the difference is that Colossus has never, in any way, shape, or form, had any reason to dress like a Village Person aside for the fact that Cockrum thought it was nifty and all his subsequent costumes are based on it.

You might not think it seems imposing, but I'd bet that was the intention behind that particular aspect of his costume. I like how you try to imply that I "enjoy" looking at Colossus without pants. His costume just doesn't bother me like it seems to bother you. There are plenty of other much more deserving costumes to complain and nit-pick at, rather than this one.

I don't mean to sound like I am insulting Dave Cockrum over the design. For the time when GIANT-SIZE came out it was fine; in an interview he gave to WIZARD once for an X-Men Special during the 90's, he claimed he'd envisioned Colossus years before he got onto the X-Men and was among the first of the "new team" he designed. Some have claimed he ripped off LOSH's Ferro-Lad, but that is untrue.

That said, like many costumes of past eras, certain aspects become outdated and need to be tweaked. Captain America's boots and belt getting tweaks to become more functional, that sort of thing. It is in that light that I feel Colossus could make due for some pants. In current times, exposed man-gams and knee-high's just look awkward, especially on a straight man who hardly acts like some flamboyant lady-killer or someone obsessed with their looks. Colossus is introverted most times. He isn't a wrestler, so that connection is right out. In fact, sometimes I wonder if all the years of this design aspect led to Mark Millar getting the idea to run with the stereotype and allude to Ultimate Colossus being gay.

There's an entire topic for nitpicking about superhero costumes elsewhere on the board. Colossus came up in the LAST DEFENDERS roster so that is why I brought it up, and a few other posters agree with me here, so this is hardly some personal crusade.

Fixing this detail of his overall design for his wonky decision to join a random superhero team is something that wouldn't be hard for an artist to do. Hence why some of us are wondering about it. It is about time.

More difficult is integrating Colossus into a super-team where he isn't the strongest guy around and aside for minor power details (not needing oxygen, water, food or sleep in metal form, or past resistance to some magical attacks that I highly doubt any editor recalls) is outdone by She-Hulk, or making his decision to join the Defenders work without it seeming either random or obligatory. In comparison to those issues, pants should be a cinch.

It may seem like I dislike Colossus, but that is untrue. Out of everyone mentioned, I emote about Colossus the most here because I would like for this to be a good step for him, and I would like this to work, on every level possible. Reality has made me a cynic, though, so I usually envision where it can go wrong first. And poor Piotr's history has had a lot of false starts, moments of hope, and then underachievement or misuse.

Colossus' man-panties have come up before, not just in this thread. I just don't see the reason that if you're going to complain about a costume, you'd overlook the vast majority of ridiculous costumes that makes no sense whatsoever, and focus on one that isn't really that far fetched.

I mean, Superman's costume, while iconic, is actually ******ed. He wears red underwear overtop of his pants, and then uses a belt to hold them up. Why does he do that? It makes no ****ing sense. If you've gotta nit-pick a costume, start there.

Nitpicking Superman's costume is useless for two reasons:

1). As one of the first superheroes to hit it big, most superheroes trace some inspiration from him in some way.

2). He has had that costume for almost 70 years, and it is never, ever, going to change. It doesn't help that most of his alternate costumes have ranged from Stupid to Damned Stupid. But even when he does something minor, like alter his S-Shield a little bit, people ***** about it like it was the 10th Plague. It is like having Mickey Mouse wear a shirt after all this time. The public has accepted the design for over half a century and thus is immaculate.

I bring up Colossus because his costume, or him for that matter (being blunt) are not considered as "classic" (and thus untouchable) as many other heroes with silly costumes. He's changed his costume quite frequently for long stretches of time during Claremont's original 19 year run and then a few times afterwards. He even has worn pants before for some stretches, including 2001 when it was decided to sacrifice him to end the Legacy Virus storyline for 3.5 years. At least he died with pants on, to paraphrase some saying.

Changing Superman or Batman's silly costume element? Never happening. Changing Colossus'? Has happened before, briefly, and is more possible. Hence, *****ing about it.

I am starting to get tired of the subject. He'll probably just have his man-gams showing because that is what Cassaday went with in ASTONISHING and no one's going to F with that. Aside for being interested by Casey's review and the promo cover and art, we could discuss possible team aspects, one of which is how, in theory, Colossus could be utilized to potential rather than play back up to the stronger, tougher, regenerating She-Hulk.

Pretty sure he died in this costume, actually:

As you can see, pants are in short supply there.

I like Colossus' standard costume. He don't need no stinkin' pants.

Regardless of the fact that Superman or Batman's underpants aren't going anywhere, they are infinitely more stupid than anything Colossus has got on his body, and that's a fact.

:)

I'll say though that I don't mind any of his costumes, so I'd be fine with him coming back in panties as much as him coming back in the early 00's/revolution outfit (which was pretty cool).

I don't know, Colossus' 'classic' costume just never really worked well for me. He could stand to go the way of Beast or the Thing or the Hulk, in fact--just scale his costume down to almost nothing and let his body be its normal, visually interesting self. Like with this costume:

colossus-bigcostume4.jpg

Collossus has the same costume design as Ms. Marvel.

OUCH! That is very harsh.

Sadly, I can't say it is untrue. :(

It has been a while since I read that Feb. 2001 UXM issue. He had pants on the cover.

The only functional need I see is artists apparently seem to like drawing more of his metal body and the lack of pants allows them to (during the Australian days he even fought in essentially bikinni underware and boots, but it is hot in the Outback so I can let that slide as being functional). But aside for that, it is time he embraced pants full time, or learn how to wrestle.

You guys never learn. You cannot link images from UncannyXMen.net

I pointed out that Eliyja was a bandwith thief once, and he started trolling me and deleting all of my posts.

Bah, they're fixed for everyone but PJ's non-Photobucket-seeing ass now. Get off my back, people! :cmad:

That's why I can't be a mod. I'd have too much fun ruining the Hype for everybody unprovoked. (Though apparently E was provoked.)

What happened with the Morg thing?

I can magically see them. The first one is by Larocca, and is indeed the one he died in. The second one is just his red panties. I don't know who drew it.

Someone higher up must have sat him down. He's stopped trolling me.
