The Loki Thread

If he wasnt cast as SpiderMan would you have had Tobey Maguire? I know it would never happen.

Not really. Loki is a lanky, creepy/sleazy guy with an air of aristocratic arrogance. I have trouble imagining Toby portraying those qualities.

I think Jude Law might be the best bet, because he could bring the movie some much needed star-power. However, as far as less famous actors go, I wouldn't mind seeing Micheal Fassbender give it a try.

Michael Fassbender is a NICE choice. I just recommended him for Hal Jordan over in the Green Lantern thread, but now that you mention it, I definitely see his features being a good match for Loki too.

I'm going to beat a dead horse here...

Whoever gets cast as Loki should have a Scandinavian accent, not a British one. In fact, ALL Asgardians should sound- well- NORSE, since they are the Norse pantheon.

If we cast a movie about Japanese characters, we don't have them all speaking British-accented English. If we cast a movie about Russian characters, we don't make them do a British accent. So why is that whenever the Marvel Asgardian characters are portrayed on film, in animation, or in video games, they're portrayed with a British accent? What the hell is that about?

They're Nordic. They should SOUND Nordic. Thor has more in common with the Swedish Chef than King Arthur, and Loki would be better voiced by Rutger Hauer than by Hugo Weaving.

Nobody listens to me though-- They all picture Thor and company speaking in an English accent, because apparently, even though they're all REALLY speaking Proto-Norse (an ancient Scandinavian dialect), they're understood by English speakers due to some Asgardian magic (or something)... But why would an American hear an English accent? Why wouldn't it be an American accent if it's fully translated by magic? And if there IS an accent, why wouldn't it be Norse instead of English?!?!

This oversight frustrates me.

Thor is hardly the only character of foreign descent to be portrayed speaking in an English accent. Simply look at any Shakespeare adaptation, stories set all over Europe, yet the characters almost always talk in English accents. English accents have long been a cinematic shorthand through a whole range of historical epics and fantasies. It's an all-purpose accent that seems to fit into a whole range of contexts.

He's pulling a Kaufman. I have no doubt of this.

I was kind of thinking the same thing regardless its not great for your career. Nobody is going to cast an actor if he is crazy or pretending to be a crazy person

I agree. British accents often sound vaguely old-fashioned and therefore suit those kind of movies better than accents from the "New World". Using actors with Nordic accents would be a bit more problematic. An all Scandinavian cast might not be able to sell a big American summer-blockbuster* and the actors would have to be fluent enough to express themselves naturally in english. That is also a problem is you try to have American/British actors use a Nordic accent, they might not sound as convincing and impressive as they would with their own natural accent. And I think that more important than historically accurate accent (whatever that is in this case) is for the actors to be able to give gravitas to that almost poetic way of speaking that Asgardians are often portrayed having. In that sense a Thor-actor has indeed more in common with someone playing King Arthur than Swedish Chef.

*ZeroCorpse even used Rutger Hauer as an example despite the fact that he's not Northern European. I guess Scandinavia doesn't really have a lot of internationally known movie stars.

definitely the loki costume they should use in my opinion

I thought I'd rescue The Loki Thread from Page 2 with another casting suggestion.

What about Tom Hardy?

The chameleon-like actor has made a name for himself with a series of show-stealing supporting turns in such British TV shows as Cape Wrath and Oliver Twist (playing a very scary Bill Sikes), and has had roles in films such as Star Trek: Nemesis (where he played the baddie), Layer Cake and RockNRolla. Finally he's earned himself a starring role in the upcoming Bronson, in a dynamite performance which is sure to elevate his profile.

I'll say he has a good look for Loki, though he changes his look so drastically from role to role that I'm not even sure I can say with confidence what the hell he ACTUALLY looks like. But more than anything it's his voice which I think is PERFECT for Loki. With no disrespect against the guy intended, it's one of the slimiest, most reptilian voices I've ever heard.

Assuming we end up with a Thor in his mid-to-late 20's, who are some potential Lokis in that age range?

Most everyone I like for the part (Jude Law, John Ryhs-Myers, etc) are in their early 30's

I think that, regardless of what the casting call says, both Thor and Loki should be actors in their 30s. How are you going to have an ensemble to match the stellar casts for Iron Man and Incredible Hulk (I'd have bought a ticket on the strength of those casts alone, regardless of what the movie was), with a cast full of kids?

I agree, but based on the casting call I'm not sure the filmmakers necessarily do.

In an ideal world we'd get something along the lines of Skarsgård/Thor, Blessed/Odin, Law/Loki.

Here's my desired castlist, as it currently stands:

Thor - Alexander Skarsgard
Loki - Tom Hardy
Sif - Evangeline Lilly
Odin - Stellan Skarsgard
Balder - Dominic Cooper
Heimdall - (still thinking on this one)
Volstagg - Kenneth Branagh
Hogun - Tony Leung
Fandral - Rupert Penry-Jones

Bumping the thread for the "Harnett for Loki" rumor:

But, we also got some other information about the villain in the story, Thor's brother Loki.

Loki isn't a very nice guy. He's quite treachorous actually and fancies himself the God of Mischief. He is repeatedly trying to get rid of Thor and seize the throne of Asgard for himself. One thing led to another and he ended up being the God of Evil. What will his role in Marvel's live action adaptation? Probably something similiar, we know he's the main baddie.

Who does Brannagh want to bring this evil character to life? Try Josh Hartnett. IESB sources say Hartnett has met with Brannagh as well and he is currently on a very short list to play the villain in the film.

Word is Josh and his camp are really interested because he has never played a villain before and after Heath Ledger's Oscar win for the latest comic book villain, Hartnett is intrigued by the character.

Now, for those of you who will copy and paste this article faster than a barefoot jackrabbit on a hot greasy griddle in the middle of August, pay attention to this part - we aren't saying he's been cast, but he's on a very short list for the role of Thor's brother Loki. Got it? Short list.

Hartnett standing at 6 foot 3 inches would be a great adversary to Alex's 6 foot 4 inch frame.

Could this be another Heath Ledger's Joker in the making? Are actors taking the superhero films more serious because of Ledger's Oscar win?

I know that there are a lot of Hartnett haters out there, but I actually kind of like the idea of Hartnett as Loki

I'm sure the haters will come if Hartnett is confirmed as Loki, but thus far I'm pleasantly surprised by how open people have been to the idea.

I think it is all about matching/balancing your talent... Loki/Thor should be similar in the age range where one guy doesn't overshadow the other... if it is Skars/Law then it does not work. If it is Law/Pitt then it works... that's why Hartnett works.
