I think the McCain campaign didn't do enough to distance themselves from the Bush Administration....the massive amount of negative ads and negative attitude turned a lot of people off IMO....People grew tired of a party who uses fear and exclusion....just look at how the crowd at McCains campaign reacted when he mentioned the President-Elects name...they started booing right off....

Yeah that vwas the turning point for sure. Had this election been about national security and the war on terror we may have elected ol' maverick.

I agree, the attacks were a bad call. McCain should've kept the focus on energy policy (the one issue in which he slaughters Obama), and then brought in Romney as VP which would've allowed him to shift to economic policy. He should've never denied we are in a reccession. It showed just how out of touch he is.

I said I was undecided until the debates, and I'm a Union electrician.
I thought I'd add that my boyfriend is a Republican and he worked on Obama's campaign, huge trend a lot of Repubs either voted for Obama or didn't vote at all.
Looking at the results it seems a number of people just didn't vote for McCain then vote for Obama, as far as Republicans goes. The raw totals of the 3rd party candidates went up. To me McCain is basically Democrat-lite.

Your trade should be pretty recession proof. Unless your mortgage is really huge. I hope you didn't do something like a 0 down mortgage.

Yes I think him choosing Palin over Romney was a big mistake bacause that was looked at by most as him trying to win an election as opposed to doing what's best for the country.

No 0 down. There usually is a lull in work around this time of year, holiday's and especially so during election time. But there are currently over 900 people on the books looking for work at the hall. My number is in the low 300.

I think it was patially a mistake.

Honestly...McCain HAD to do something drastic from what I saw...
Obama had a rock solid hold onthe press and on people...McCain was older and needed something fresh.

Not that I am saying I supported his overall decision picking her...if McCain picked Romney or any of the other guys....I think he might have gotten stomped more...
Who's to say...I may be wrong...because as much as Palin was disliked, she did polarize a group of people...for good or bad...

i can give my reasons why, as a conservative republican, why he didn't get my vote;

1) Sarah Palin
2) His age
3) Sarah Palin

- Jow

1) His reaction to the financial crisis (including the FUndamentals)
2) Overly rancorous negative attacks and energy that just didn't fit the country's mood
3) Generally supporting George W. Bush and his policies.

(Palin would have been #4 but could easily be inserted there)

1. The Current Economic "crisis"
2. Voters that don't understand the Economy
3. Government Educated Voters, "bred" to believe that Government is there to give them everything, instead of belief that Government is there to only protect the rights Guarenteed by the Constitution.

I know women love Palin. And I can see why. She's a mom, a govenor, the bread winner in her family, and very attractive as well. But she was terribly unqualified. I guess he was low on options though.

I wonder how Romney woulda done? I guess him being mormon would turn off voters...

I really think it was everything, but mostly the current administration, McCain's personality change and Palin that did him in. The current administration f'ed things up so badly, I just don't think many people wanted another republican in office.

McCain's personality also totally changed, I remember Jon Stewart in an EW interview talking about what a great guy McCain was before the nomination, how he loved having him on his show, but the person Jon remembered was gone once the campaign started.

Finally Palin was blatant pandering that anyone had to see, he was going after bitter Hillary supporters, thinking they'd still be bitter over Hillary's lose in November. Palin didn't even know what the Vice President job was just before she was given the "job"?!?!

Also, I think the polls lied to a lot of people because it was based on the popular vote, which was close, but the electoral college was a whole different story. McCain got slaughtered where it mattered.

His race and age and I guess Sara palin. I never thought he had a chance to be honest.

I personally lke obama and would have voted for him if I lived in the states but I also do think that the hype machine really helped him. My brother, who only likes things when they are being hyped by the media, was all obamad out last night. That guy has never paid attention to anything that has to do with voting in his life lol.

Congrats to Obama and lets hope he can get things done.

While it may not seem like it right now. You are in a very fortunate position and industry given the economic conditions.

Economically speaking he is still in the same Keynesian ilk. But I still stand by the fact the numbers would have been better because of this crisis and his resume on business and economic matters.

1. The economy becoming the focus of the race as opposed to the war on terror
2. His connection to Bush
3. His pick for vice president

Palin, Palin, and the fact that he's probably going to die in a month since he's a million years old

1)His age. he was too old.

2)He won the nomination too easily; Obama went neck and neck with Hilary up to the very end of the primaries. As the saying goes "Easy come, easy go".

2) Palin. He tried to capitalize on the whole 'change' theme that Obama was going for by nominating a woman, and it backfired.

Nominating McCain. If Mitt Romney were the nominee there is a damn good chance we'd have our first Mormon president-elect instead of first black president-elect.
Agreed. I think Romney would have been a "godsend" with the Economic downturn.

1. Divisive, hate-filled campaign rhetoric (i.e. fear politics)
2. His support of George W. Bush's policies
3. Bad campaign management (i.e. 'suspending' his campaign, choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate.)

*I also do believe that his age played a role. That being said, I think his age only became an issue because of his choice of running mate.

1. He's a Republican.
2. His age.
3. Sarah Palin.

1) People want real change and Obama is the hope of change.
2) McCain will stick to most of Bush's old policies
3) The people are terrified of another term under the republicans
Posts like this make me cringe at the class of American voters.

1. Age
2. Palin
3. Fundamentals of our Economy

Bonus #4 - The different message every week

1. Being perceived as the weaker candidate in the area of the economy.
2. Utterly inept campaign that mishandled attacking Obama, mishandled Sarah Palin, mishandled Get-out-the-vote programs, mishandled mostly everything.
3. George W. Bush (I have this last because McCain was leading in August and Bush didn't get worse from there to now).
