The $4.9M GHOSTBUSTERS earned on Monday is slightly less than Feig's THE HEAT which was R-rated, and earned $5.3M.
Whoa. Spy did 10% of OW on his first monday too, so maybe it's not Doom-Time yet

Yea, but what was it up against? in the following weeks?
Oh yeah, next weekend it is doom-time allright. I believe competition will eat this movie.

Just saying that the monday figure maybe wasn't that bad by Feig standards :D

It's actually a pretty decent number, since a lot of you liked to compare it to ID4. I don't see Star Trek eating too much into this, since it has been made pretty clear that the crossover audience was already alienated.

I would be surprised if there's any room for it in the next couple weeks with Star Trek, Ice Age, Jason Bourne, Light's Out, and Suicide Squad along with Pets and Finding Dory still taking a huge bite out of things.

Spy had the advantage of being an adult comedy. Not much else was competing against it in that arena.

Not trying to antagonize here, but in what way? All I've been hearing is this is massive righting of the ship after Into Darkness.

If anyone is curious and (I don't know how relevant the figure will be), Fantastic Four dropped 61.2% from Sunday to Monday. Ghostbusters dropped 60.8%.

Star Trek isn't the one that alienated the "core fans" that would be crossovers, but Ghostbusters did. I would think most of the people who saw this this weekend are more likely to see it again than Star Trek.

And 60% drops from Sun to Mon are not that uncommon.

People around me are seeing this. I don't care about RT and the reviews, I will NOT support unneeded reboots like this one and talentless actresses like McCarthy, so more of these garbage films can get made.

And Leslie Jones's screaming from the trailers, combined with her cringe-worthy attempts for joking... I can't sit through that.

All of you who go to see this, enjoy.

That first point is pretty subjective. Despite my original negativity towards this reboot, MCarthy has shown to be very talented. See St. Vincent with her and Bill Murray. It's not a big fat jokes-type roll that she sometimes plays, and does very well. But I like several of her other roles too, so whatever.

As for that second point, those loud points in the trailers, are Leslie Jones only loud points. she's a very down to Earth character, and probably the most well developed of all the girls in the film.

If a movie has really good hold on weekend then weekdays will self-adjust. Ghostbusters have tiny Sat drop and really good Sunday drop so 60.8% Sun-Mon drop is pretty ok-ish (Spy had INCREASE on first Sat and normal Sunday drop so Sun-Mon drop was 60.5% and was still considered fairly good).

Thank you for your response. Maybe I have seen only the bad stuff from McCarthy. As for Jones, I guess they shouldn't have promoted the loud points in the trailer, then. That's not how you attract audience.

The more I looked at my post, the more I was afraid I came off as kind of an a*s, so thanks for understanding what I meant.

It's been said a lot from the people that did like it, including myself, the trailers sucked a lot. I'm not going to say you'll love the movie, as it's been pretty divisive, but as someone who did, yeah, the trailers were bad. There's dialogue cut into scenes where it makes the jokes worse, there's several scenes that outright weren't in the film.

As for Jones, the "Power of Patty" scene is there, and its the main one that still stands out as her "loud humor", and there's the concert fall bit, but otherwise, she's actually a really likable character. When in the trailers she says she knows New York, it's not like just the street smart-type of knowledge. She knows actual history, has insights into the reasons certain places might attract the paranormal.

Great call on Feig's part then :whatever: to market her as a stereotype, which is ironic given all the noise he was making about criticisms lobbed at the film.

I doubt Feig was in charge of the marketing.

I doubt Feig was in charge of the marketing.
He was not. In a couple of interviews he expressed frustration at the process and trying to keep Sony from butchering the trailers. The marketing team was going for the low hanging fruit.

I'd like to address the stereotype issue re: Patty Tolan played by Leslie Jones. The character is far from stereotypical and breaks away from a lot of common tropes associated with black people in movies. The elements of her character that people have called stereotypical are superficial. Leslie Jones has a big, colorful personality. She is loud and abrasive at times, but she is genuine and real. She speaks in the vernacular of the neighborhood she grew up in. Perhaps, it would be better to examine why people see those traits as being a "black thing", than to criticize the actress for being herself?

Are you her agent?

this film should of never got a 146 million budget the studio had to know it was gonna get banned in china its not the first film with ghosts to get banned in china

That's helpful and adds to the dialog. Thank you for your stunning contribution to grown up conversation.

As opposed to you pretending to know her true character and the genesis or lackthereof when it comes to her on screen persona.

I don't know her personally, only met her once at a comedy club. I have been a fan for years though and follow her on Twitter. Her personality is hard to hide. Patty was basically her, and her acting choices informed the superficial traits of the character. Interviews have also indicated that Feig gave the actresses a lot of room to develop their characters.

I'm not pretending to know her. I'm making an informed statement, and giving an opinion that the character is actually quite well developed and contributes a lot to the team.

Patty was my favourite character in the film.
