Actually I think it exposed how regressive and backward the mainstream audience can be

much like now the rise of Donald Trump has exposed a good chunk of Americans for the rotten and hateful cave trolls they are

Except no, other female led movies have done well, even Paul Feig's previous movies have been very profitable and have had amazing legs unlike this movie.

The female audience is there, they just didn't go in the numbers they do for other properties. This was a film that should have hit big with families and kids but it didn't. As been said a billion times, if marketing sucks then why is anyone gonna want to go? That's what all this comes down to. Completely ignoring that marketing is a bigger factor then the not even 1% of audience that represent trolls is juts denial. Suicide Squad did not score a huge opening cause of bad Marketing. It's scoring big because of excellent marketing... and alot of hype for a fan favorite female character.

Malifcent, Fifty Shades of Grey, Hunger Games, Twilight and Cinderella do more then fine. Beauty and The Beast and Wonder Woman are likely to score huge next year as well. Female led properties can do very well, but this was never a property proven to be a hit with this creative team.

the marketing was perhaps one of the worst campaigns in history. This film has no-one to blame but itself for its failings. People were turned off because this film looked bad then tried to point the finger at a minority of loudmouths as the reason for it looking bad, and dozens of social justice leaning websites joined in the chorus. At a certain point people got fed up and wanted nothing to do with the movie regardless of who was it in or what the quality was. A lesson going forward here is you if you tell your audience 'they're wrong', don't expect them to still show up. A film like this needed to engage with the audience, not fight with it.

That's Sony's fault: terrible marketing, ridiculous budgeting, had little to no international appeal, marginalizing your audience, basically fanning the flames of a toxic environment with everything regarding the film, etc.

And making the movie a gender bending remake/reboot.

BULLCRAP. The only thing that this movie "exposed" was (a) how stupid the executives at Sony were for approving this gender bending remake/reboot (b) how creatively bankrupt the writers and director was for coming up with this bad and unoriginal idea and (c) that when it comes to iconic and popular well known characters the movie going public expects those characters to be MOSTLY on model and do not want to see said character's race, gender, and sexuality bent for a remake/reboot.

The rise of Trump only exposed how sick and tired a lot of Americans are of career politicians and extremist political correctness.

Nobody can blame this movie's core demographic for failing to heed the studio's cries of "we hate you; give us your money".

A female-led Ghostbusters movie might have done perfectly well if (a) the marketing wasn't repellent and, (b) it was good.

And (c) if it was a sequel with a passing of the torch legacy.

It's hard to market a well known property that comes off as a gender bending parody skit from either MAD TV,SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE,or IN LIVING COLOR.

I wouldn't say that but I believe the rise of Trump has nothing to do with hatred for this movie

They knew going before cameras starting rolling they were going to have an uphill battle, so they should have marketed the film with that in mind. They needed to sell to the audience something that was inclusive, instead what they sold was a film that constantly tried to remind people of another movie they already liked and then continued to push back against any legitimate critique of its marketing. The biggest issue I feel is that film came across as trying to make a statement more than a movie for everyone, that come hell or high water this film is coming whether you like it or not, and that is not the way to sell a movie to a sceptical audience with an attachment to a much beloved franchise. I honestly think the gender swap Ocean's Eight is going to have a much different approach to the marketing compared to this film. If that marketing team are smart they'll see the best way to get over the whole gender swap thing is to win people over with a positive marketing campaign, not dig your heals in and point fingers and tell the audience they are the problem.

Here here! I've been saying that from Day 1. Thank God this turd of a film has just about finished it's run at the theatre.

Yeah Star Wars and I would say at least Star Trek in 2009 did not take that approach.

Also anyone notice that ever since Expendables 3 movement on EXPENDABELLES has basically stalled?

Has Sony ever actually made a GOOD movie? Not luke warm or okay, but actually GOOD? I found their Spiderman movies to be okay, but certainly not great (the Sam Raimi movies were MUCH better). But for the life of me I can't think of one movie from Sony that has made me applaud and say "That was AWESOME!"

Fury, Whiplash, Capote, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Raimi's Spider-Man 1 & 2

Those are just off he top of my head, but I'm sure there are more.

I see some of you are pining for the days of yesterdecade when Luke Sifler was the GB villain.

Speaking only for myself, I'd prefer that they adapt some of the episodes of THE REAL and EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS into movies.

The Jump Street movies.

Lord/Miller >>> Paul Feig

Sausage Party was good too. They didn't "make it" but they distributed it I thinj

Why would you want to adapt Extreme Ghostbusters? That show was also a flop.

I think we won't see another GB movie for 5-10 years and it'll be a complete remake of the original film with the original characters being portrayed by new actors.

Mark my words.

What's the "juice" behind seeing another GB? We've seen all the iconic stuff updated in this version.

This isn't like Trek which was about clearing away decades of mythology to streamline. There's no Joker like villain they must fight. The thrill of updated CGI is gone.

I think some fans take for granted that they would simply get a reboot to the original group by tanking this version when what they actually did was put forward the idea this property isn't really that valuable to begin with.

leave the ****ing franchise alone. the original was a fluke. impossible to replicate

It's not about replication to me.

It's more like, what is GB without those original guys?

Imagine if Rodenberry had simply never tried TNG since it was the polar opposite of the original Trek.

If it's nothing without them, then definitely don't. If there's another spin on the idea ala modern day Ghost Hunters or a R-rated comedy then yeah. But I don't think most people would care without the original four.

I just don't think there is much you can do with the concept and nothing I've seen from anything related to the franchise has convinced me otherwise. It is closer to Jaws in that way than something like Star Trek, where there is this huge, rich universe where you can follow other characters and tell different stories about.

Even something like Back to the Future has a lot more to offer with deeper characters and the ability to go to different time periods and tell different stories.

Ghostbusters stories are very repetitive.

^^^ Exactly.

Ghostbusters wasn't created to be the start of a huge new franchise. It's a one shot comedy about a goofball semi-charlatan and when the movie's over, so is the story, pretty much. It should just be left alone.
