The New Ghostbusters - Part 6

It was stated that film would act as if the events of the original films never happened in the world of the new film. Keep in mind, the film universe never having seen Ghostbusters or an influx of ghosts before does not mean this may not or cannot be connected to the original franchise. There are some obvious echoes. And the rumor was that there's some kind of dimensional/parallel world thing at play.

While I have many friends in all facets of the industry, I did not need to bother them with this movie.

With common sense, I've explained why this movie is not some reboot unconnected to the original 2 films, and with the most recent teaser, I'm happy it proved wrong those who continuously was under some sort of impression that it was.

The amount of complaints I've read in here are some of the most mind-numbingly stupid and contradictory complaints I've read in a long time.

let's hear them one more time, if you would be so kind - why do you think it's connected?

Not taking a side on this discussion but didn't Akroyd(?) say at one point there was going to be a male cast GB film as well as an original cast GB film that all tie together? I'm sure I remember reading an interview or something that said that. Could be all bollocks

That was during that 'lightweight' discussion of creating a GB cinematic universe. No idea if that was legitimate.

All I know is that the original script, written by the creators of "The Office" had the old team was to mentor and hand the reins off to a new team which was a mix of boys and girls. Ivan Reitman was going to direct.

That all changed when Harold Ramis passed and the team didn't feel comfortable doing it anymore so they scrapped it and thus came out Paul Feig and his upcoming version.

It was definitely legitimate.

Drew Pearce wrote an extensive bible on how to proceed with a expansive cinematic universe and handed it in last summer. Should they proceed, they have a blueprint.

They were going to introduce a second (mixed gender) team, which would have been the Tatum/Pratt version and Pearce mentioned that his script bible allowed for everything to be connected (Feig's female team, Tatum/Pratt, and the original films, etc.)

He just does apparently. I even gave him links and quotes awhile back from the entire production and he still is of firm belief this is a sequel.

People weren't under the impression it wasn't connected. They have openly said it was not connected. And the plot details that have leaked out (which were eventually confirmed by officially released details, as well as the Sony email leaks) prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this film WAS NOT tied to the originals. It was an entirely new story, with the original continuity, story, and characters discarded.

If the film is now some how tied to the original films, it happened late in the process, done via rewrites and reshoots, similar to Paramount's patchwork on TMNT when fans turned on that film after it was revealed The Shredder was white, not Japanese, and not named Oroku Saki but Eric Sachs, a character who remained in the film but had all mentions of him being the Shredder cut out.

I say with 100% confidence that it was not Sony or Paul Feig's original intention to tie this movie to original. And if it now is tied to the original (I doubt it, but it wouldn't surprise me), it most certainly happened because fans turned on the film because of that disconnect. That was and is the first and most important reason this film has gotten so much flack.

And if the rumors of this film's quality are true (also wouldn't surprise me considering the terrible sounding plot leak), then this move makes sense. Sony is going to need to get the hardcore, built in fans back, and that's pretty much the only way to do it.

We already know the original film's cast members appear in this film, so tying this film to the original continuity isn't impossible. They could have convinced the original cast to reprise their roles in reshoots, OR they've always been on board to reprise those roles, and it's been a closely guarded secret. Which feels unlikely since it would require Murray to have agreed to play Venkman again, which he so far has been 100% unwilling to do. And, we have an abundance of evidence to the contrary.

But who knows.... Maybe they did get Murray to finally agree, and all the original cast are back in their original roles. If that was/is the case, I'd certainly be much more willing to go see this film. I always wanted new Ghostbusters, I just don't agree with abandoning the old stories and characters to do so.

If anything else, I'm stocking up on Ecto-Cooler and twinkies.

If it was a surprise twist all along, like that was their plan, then they messed up royally... the negative reaction wouldn't have been so...

Well with the new rumors going around from the test screenings/secret trailer screenings, it sounds like they pulled a "Ninja Turtles" and the studio interfered with reshoots/rewrites and frankenstein'd it to connect it to the original films. I guess we won't know for another 7 days until the trailer arrives.

Sooo we should be getting that trailer any day now yeh?

3 days left...THEN, ONLY THEN WILL WE KNOW.

Well, even then, can't be absolutely certain until the film actually comes out either.

This ^ But I think some are just ready to rip the trailer apart immediately and use it to fuel the hate train.

I was at the first test screening of the film a couple of weeks ago. The only connections I saw, were fan service nods and references. Got to meet Ivan Reitman and sat right by him. He laughed quite a bit and genuinely seemed to enjoy the movie, as did I.

Is the trailer dropping Wednesday or Thursday? I just need to know so my bottle of Jack Daniels is ready.

Honestly, I don't get it. Why does the remake upset so many people? If you don't want to see it...don't. If you want to give it a chance, go see it. If you would rather pop in your blu-ray of the original and watch it, go for it.

Ghostbusters remains one of my favorite movies of all time. The only thing that would piss me off, is if someone destroyed every copy of the original in the world and told me I had to only watch the remake from now on. The most I can really say publicly because of legally binding agreements I signed, is that I really enjoyed it. It wasn't as good as the original, but it was better than Ghostbusters 2.

It is frustrating seeing all the speculation and knowing what spoiler hounds are getting right and what they are getting really wrong, and not being able to say anything.

Are you a fan of the McCarthy/Wiig/Feig brand of humor? Did you like Spy or Bridesmaids or Tammy or Identity Thief? Should we expect the same style of humor with this? Let's start there.

I enjoyed Bridesmaids and Tammy, the others you mentioned...not so much. I will say this, McCarthy is very different than I've seen her before, much more reserved and toned down. Wiig is hit or miss and her weaker points in the film are because she is playing up the awkward, geeky, boy crazy angle towards Hemsworth. The real stars are McKinnon and Jones as far as I'm concerned. It's hard to judge tone, since most of the f/x shots were not complete. Of the finished ghost effects, they were quite scary and well done.

Thanks for sharing! Hang in there. You only have to hold it in for four long months and a couple of weeks :oldrazz:

I've never understood the early hate this got either. I knew its very existence alone would mean new product on the shelves and a shot of energy into the franchise. Never expected it to be perfect or top the original, but I knew enough love would be put into it for it to at least be a decent film. From your feelings I think I'll get that. Plus, I really like GB2. If I think it's better than that I am in for a treat!

I have to say, one of the greatest nights of my life was being in the test screening audience and having Ivan Reitman choose the seat directly behind me in the theater. I had run into him in the men's room shortly before that and about had a heart attack. That may have unfairly altered my perception of the movie, but I like to think I'm fair when judging movies.

Stellar story! Definitely jealous of your Reitman experience. I can relate a bit with some my experiences. It's one thing to run into a celebrity when you're expected, like a convention or something. But when you randomly walk into one out of the blue and it's like randomly bumping into a crush only amplified.

Thanks for some positivity added to the thread. I hope we'll see more with the trailer release in a couple of days. Phew! Very, very pumped!
