If we looked at ghostbusters through the eyes of children these days who may not have any strong love for the original then i can see this new ghostbusters looking like a fun movie with comedy, ghosts and weapons which is a cool premise really so if this film was being made just for them that would be alright but its clearly not made just for them otherwise the film wouldn't have heaps and heaps of nostalgia thrown in.

Looks like the fanboy boycott may not not mean dick.

Well if you ignore the fact it cost 140-150 million to make and another 100 million to market then a 40 million opening weekend is great. ID:Resurgence also opened to 40 million and is looking at just over 100 million US total.

The internet makes things appear bigger than they really are. I think if this movie's a success, all this backlash will seem like a wonderment that it was ever a thing compared to what it becomes.

Haha, I was reading Stuff magazine at the bookstore earlier, which probably is like a month late regarding current news and they were reviewing the old Ghostbusters with a sidebar that said, "don't listen to the internet misogynists, the reboot will be great." Haha.

Well that is spoken like someone who doesn't have a child. :funny: Ice Age was on its last legs after the first movie. Do you know how many ****s kids give? Zero. If the squirrel gets hurt trying to get the acorn, they will be front and center cracking up. Children aren't looking for a lasting narrative and they certainly never get sick of the same damn joke. They aren't looking for something fresh. Children like familiarity.

Further, word of mouth means nothing to youngsters. A 6 year old isn't jumping on the Internet message boards and texting their friends about how great Ghostbusters is. Word of mouth is more of an adult factor.

Sure I don't have kids, but I was also a kid once. And did anyone really remember another Ice Age movie was coming out this year? And the Ice Age sequels always did very well. But it's the fifth movie (or sixth? I don't know anymore) and I think kids and families have reached their animated quota with Dory and Pets. I think this a timing issue too and Ice Age just doesn't have it.

Kids do like familiarity but at the end of the day, parents are the ones who make the decision to go to the movies. I think kids and parents would rather be picking Ghostbusters this week. It's an old favorite that hasn't been seen for years with recognition for the adults, and the idea of the film is appealing to kids, especially since the tone looks more like it's for families. It looks more accessible than the first film even. It'll come down to reviews too: Ice Age will probably have bad reviews, while Ghostbusters with better. Which film will their parents want to spend a lot of money on?

Word of mouth is HUGE for kids. Kids today have cell phones and God knows what else. WOM applies for them in their own way. When one kid sees it, he or she will tell their friends. It's not hard to imagine. I was 11 when the first POTC film came out and the day after I saw it, I couldn't stop talking about it to my friends, and that day, we all saw it.

Box office wise it very much depends how well it holds, like if it makes 40 million this weekend then it has to keep going strong after that.

The Box office is really unpredictable really

It's a thing that's bigger than people care to admit, yet at the same time, a lot of this **** has been online which never really effects a film if the movie is better. It effected FF because it was just bad and the bad buzz caught on fast.

I honestly think this movie will overperform this weekend. If not, it will have solid legs. Maybe like a Batman Begins situation here.

I forgot Kunis has a raunchy comedy coming out the same day as Bourne.

I think its fair to say even if this film flops sony are not going to stop milking this machine.

I personally feel they could drive the concept into the ground with all these new teams in cartoons, video games and movies but thats their plan.

Hell, I'd like to see something done with the IDW timeline where Janine, Ortiz, Kylie and that one dude were the replacement team.

Tarzan opened up a bit less than $40, and is well on it's way past $100 mil. Things can go either way. It is up to the audience. Considering it looks to be reviewed better than either, I think it is more likely for the audience to respond well to it.

Seems weird didn't know Theaters had a choice of what they showed or not. They usually get there bookings Monday Night and put up their Schedule on Tuesday NIghts.

I have a tiny local theater that is not part of a chain. I'm kinda in the middle of nowhere.

Look no further than scott pilgrim on that example.

It jumped on social media yesterday and earlier today, but it still pretty low (considering where it should be)

July 13th (movie/tweets/Pos:Neg ratio)
Ghostbusters 33,041 10:1
Bad Moms 216 16:0
Star Trek Beyond 3,090 57:1
Ice Age 5 1,874 10:1
Jason Bourne 1,644 16:1

I still thing those numbers could be a bit deceptive. Since the reviews filtered in, trolls have begun to lash out any way they can. I've had friends post that they liked the film and had people they've never met comment with name calling and hateful remarks. The internet never seems to amaze me.

I'm hoping that we'll be surprised this weekend with higher totals. Studios usually low ball estimates to make sure actuals look better than predicted. But even if it opens at $50 million, it could still perform like Ant-Man last summer and be on its way to a very good domestic and WW gross.

Which will finish around 125 million. Not that bad right? Well the movie cost 180 million. So kind of bad.

Exactly. These kinds of earnings aren't horrible for other films, but when the budgets are high - they're potentially disastrous.

Excited to see the film now that the reviews are in, but there's no way SONY is happy with the marketing team for this response - should have opened a heck of a lot bigger. For those saying other films this summer have opened similarly, this summer in Hollywood hasn't been good overall. People who have seen it have said it's good, critics have said it's good, marketing scared people away that WOM and Sony has to know rope back in. Hopefully they can find their hail mary pass. Excited to see what they do because they have the ammo to pull some move off.

That's promising news.

#Ghostbusters has been denied release in China: http://vult.re/29SBhsU

That could be disastrous, I see SONY bending over for a China cut here if needed or doing something to try to get China back.

well doesn't China have rules against showing ghosts or supernatural elements on screen??
I've read that before, and If so, this movie is f***ed there, no amount of creative editing can get around that
