If that's true, then they should've seen that coming.

I had heard a while back that China wasn't showing the movie. Didn't know this was new news. Maybe it just became official?

Could this be the reason for all the strong advertising in Japan?

well doesn't China have rules against showing ghosts or supernatural elements on screen??
I've read that before, and If so, this movie is f***ed there, no amount of creative editing can get around that

Yes, no ghosts are allowed in China. Funny then, that the no ghost logo doesn't appeal.

The article said they weren't even testing over there. I think Sony saw this coming.

Studios in general know about the issues with Chinese censorship and plan accordingly these days.

Looks like the fanboy boycott may not not mean dick.

Again, contrary to popular belief on these boards and other fan forums, Fanboys don't mean **** when it comes to the bottom line.

They're not the target audience. Never have been, never will be.

Can't honestly say I liked what I saw, and I never had a fight in the battle of this redo.

I think Sony really ****ed up the marketing of this movie. Awful trailers that made it look worse than it seems to be in reality, awful posters and advertising, and talking too much about the fan backlash and backlash from angry bros instead of letting the quality of the movie speak for itself from the very beginning.

If the box office isn't enough to make up the budget then they only have themselves to blame.

Amy Nicholson from MTV's review is kind of hilarious
She admits the secondary characters/plot/effects/villain/soundtrack are all totally sub-par, but spends the whole review talking about how it's this big 'f*** you' to men so that makes it good. But haters are the sexist ones.

It's so hard to be a man in these oppressive times.

Thats not the point at all, point is she trashed several key elements of the film, but largely ignored that in favor of dwelling on the controversy

Which will finish around 125 million. Not that bad right? Well the movie cost 180 million. So kind of bad.

As has happened with this movie already the box office figures will be spun to suit the narrative. The film will be deemed a success one way or another, even if it does only open to $40+.

The whole thing is so ironic really, there is so much talk about sexism and yet there is a fair amount of people saying they felt the men in the movie were portrayed like idiots

Ghostbusters has been Cerrified Fresh.

Women generally don't get these kinds of movies appealing directly to them like that so that is probably why she feels justified taking that stance. I don't entirely blame her for it, its an understandable reaction. Its like a starving person being unapologetic in indulging themselves on a buffet full of food.

The ol' nail in the coffin. China is the one place that bails out Hollywood, but not this time!

Not particularly. I doubt China was going to "save" Ghostbusters anyway. And from what I've heard, The Shallows will get to go to China, then. And since the Shallows is already making a tidy profit, I'm sure China will just be icing on the cake.

"Super Power Dare Die Team" best movie title ever. Lol. If that appeases China that would be great.

- Chinese film title for 'Ghostbusters'

Can someone even explain how the title relates?

And that's the major problem with the movie. Forget quality or marketing, it has become too much of a battle of the sexes, men vs women, etc. type thing.

I don't get as a professional reviewer hired by a company can let that kind of opinion fly.

I always bring it back to race, but if I was hired by MTV and in a review said something along the lines of: "I liked Django Unchained because he killed whites" that would just ruin my credibility as a reviewer.

I havent seen this, but from what I hear there's a lot of men are stupid, jokes about double standards similar to Neighbors 2, which I enjoyed and I don't think that's how you 1) make a successful film or 2) make a truly good movie for women or people of color or whoever.

TO build something up you don't have the bring something else down. Look at Bridesmaids, all female cast.

TO make good movies about a black (or whatever race) cast you don't have to break down white people the whole film. To make a movie about body image positivity/overweight people you don't have to bring down muscular or "in shape" people.

I just think it's a bad way to make a film and a bad way to try and bring help women, people of color, or whoever see better representation of themselves in Hollywood, music, or just life in general

EDIT: You know it's actually comments and stuff like what this Amy Nicholson said that actually has bastardized and is ruining feminism. And it really annoys me. I suppose I count as a feminist and if you read about feminism and its history. It wasnt about hating men it was about loving women and building women up.
But this 2nd wave of feminism has ruined things to the point that even women are saying: "I'm not a feminist because I dont hate men" or "Im not a feminist because I liked to cook for my husband". Which doesn't mean your not a feminist. The term has just been altered for the worst.
Maybe I'm just "mansplaining" things, but it's just how I see it. /endrant

If this movie actually does end up doing well then the gloating will be well deserved. Let's be real here, she's not talking to the average Joe on the street. She is talking about the Gamergate/ Reddit/ entitled geek culture.

Geek culture has been dismissive of female geeks for a while. I didn't think it was bad when geeks were upset that Twilight was invading Comic- Con and taking up lots of press cause everyone made fun of Twilight but I now see how some geeks only want girl nerds to be seen but not heard.

Again, I have to wonder how this movie would be received with an all-male cast. I really don't think it would have been much better (a lazy Hollywood reboot). And it wouldn't have feminist defenders obviously.

I think a lot of fans were incensed by the notion that they rebooted this just to have a vehicle for these female stars.

I'd be pretty pissed off and feel vindicated too if I were a woman and something finally came along for women that was met with misogyny and needless, suspicious disdain that turns out to be successful, which are things that happen in day to day life for them. Their anger is justified. And it's a movie. Nobody's getting harmed here and it helps feminism. Let them be angry. I'd say anger is a rational response to things like this. I don't indite them for making them react like this.

Actually, this reminds me when Feig went on that twitter rant last year. He was pretty instigated to get to that point.
