Like don't get me wrong, I like New Mutants, if there should be a X-Men spin off movje featuring a group of mutants, it should be them first. But with the period setting, Xavier being their trainer, this might look like a random X-Men film to people. Like oh here's the other mutants you don't know about that are studying in the Xavier Institute, go watch the movie!
Well since Boone managed to convince the suits of making a trilogy I think they must've seen that it would interest the audience as a spin-off. I mean these are the same people that Ryan and his team took years to convince.

I do not see any proof for your theory! Your vague ideas are not getting any more legitimate for redundantly stating them. You are claiming that audiences did not show up because it is set in the past but "Days of Future Past" and "X-Men: Wolverine Origins" have also set in the past and made a lot of money! "X-Men: Apocalypse" failure is surely more complex than taking place in 1980s...My vague theory would be really awful, ugly CGI trailers and uninspired character designs which did not convince anybody to show up + no Hugh Jackman in a leading role promoting this movie...

Of course nobody is buzzing about "New Mutants" so far because it is totally unknown franchise to mainstream audiences. Deadpool was very differently hyped by great marketing and has a very large comic book audience. New Mutants on the other hand as a team barely showed up in the comic book universe since their long-term series was canceled. "Stranger Things" was huge and I think "New Mutants" could easily attract the same crowd. What we know so far is that this movie with its horror elements will be TOTALLY different from anything we saw so far in the X-Men universe. I think the 80s vibe could be very helpful to create the right nostalgic tone for this franchise.

I found it totally unfounded to compare Deadpool's responses after the test footage "leak" with "New Mutants" short video. Being set in the 1980s has NOTHING to do with these online reactions...

Everything about this movie looks super fresh at this point. I'm not in the mood for any commercial boxoffice negativity. Who cares. I'm here for a GREAT new movie taking place in the X-Men universe and not for the next 1 billion franchise.

Are people buzzing over The New Mutants' animated test scene like Deadpool's leaked test footage, nope.

Well obviously thats because people know its set in the past, if people were told it was set in the present it suddenly would get so much hype!

I joke obviously.

New Mutants in the other hand, I don't think they were as popular as the X-Men. They aren't that distinct compare to Deadpool. I don't see anyone complaining when Sunspot was an extra in Dofp or when Cannonball was cut in Deadpool. Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Warlock, Demon Bear, Lockheed would require a lot of money when it comes to VFX. Well look at guardians of the galaxy, no one knew those characters and it wasn't set on earth but people still went to see it because everything has to start somewhere.

Just wait and see before making judgement.

I wouldn't be surprised if they take off the X-Men title next year as it will add some confusion over what exactly new mutants is.

Someone is triple posting again.

Making sequels and a trilogy is a trend especially for blockbuster films like X-Men. It could very well be one of those films that were intended to be the first part of a trilogy and ended up as a unology because of box office shortcomings.

What they should be doing other than including X-Men in the title, is set this up in the present where they could potentially cross over with Deadpool, Negasonic, X-Force and not just the X-Men if the film succeeds. Colossus having a small cameo scene with Magik could be cool too. I doubt thats gonna happen in the 80s NM film. Then get someone other than Xavier to train these newbies, how many times are we gonna see Xavier mentor mutants ? Pass the role to someone else.

We've had two films with Xavier in his teaching/mentor role. First Class and Apocalypse.

X1, X2 and X3 says hi!

I guess he can be their teacher forever!

Oh boy. I'm guessing Psylockolussus is going to hate on this and root for it to fail from now till opening day. Its going to be long year.

Apparently this film will automatically fail because it may be set in the past.

Not surprisingly, you don't understand that what he was to the cast in the original films was much, much different than in First Class and Apocalypse. He had practically no interaction with Rogue, who was the learning character.

I seriously doudt reynolds will do Deadpool 2 In 2018,X-force In 2019 and deadpool III In 2020.I think it's more likely Deadpool 2 in 2018 and deadpool 3 in 2020.also if reynolds pulls his weight around and demans the deadpool writers write every film with deadpool 3 films in 3 years is a bit much don't you think.

It is a bit much but if the demand is so strong and everyone is getting along, nothing would stop Fox from releasing 3 Deadpool related films in 3 straight years.

I hope we would get a X-Men v X-Force as soon as possible! That one would excite me!

Hey, I mean, I am an Original Cast/Trilogy fanboy like you and I'm sure you are upset about Mcavoy and co taking over the franchise now, but hating on them and rooting for the First class crew and related films to fail is pointless. The products they put out will decide their fate. The bias hate is weird.

I was originally turned off from this movie because of all the characters being no-names but I was reading up on all the characters and I'm actually really excited about this movie. Especially after Boone's comments comparing this to a horror movie. Demon Bear can be something really special. He can be so terrifying and unique. done well, this character is going to blow people away.

I can recommend to read the first 50 issues of Claremont's New Mutants. It is really a lot of fun and Dani Moonstar is a breakout character. Bill Sienkiewicz's art is also very beautiful for a mainstream comicbook. Legion is also introduced in New Mutants and I re-read it to get hyped for his new series. ;)

Magneto is actually the main mentor of the New Mutants and not Prof. X. It would have been pretty great if Singer had decided to let Magneto stay at the Xavier's School as a teacher and the New Mutants would have become Magneto's "special class" like in the comic books...

P.S.

Cool story bro!

Cool story bro!

I know you are upset but at least Deadpool, Xforce and possible Gambit will be set in the present day so its a win-win situation for the First class era fans and OT/modern day fans. I think its cool. We can all get along.

If Deadpool, X-Force and Gambit are all set in the present day, wouldn't it make sense to place the characters from X-Men 7 in the present day as well? It makes it so much easier to do the crossovers the kids today love so much.

To be fair there is nothing that says X-Force will be set in present day, especially if they want X23 to be apart of it.

Eh. You think this is about the love for the cast? I am not losing any sleep now that Hugh JackmN is no longer playing Wolverine. I don't want Ian and Rebecca to play Magneto and Mystique. So it's not really about the love for the Of cast. I don't even want Stewart to return after Logan as he and Jackman already had too much role in these movies.

X-Men should be in the present. You buy the comics and you don't see them stuck in the past especially when the other Marvel characters are in the present. Plus they are neglectingto use and develop characters such as Iceman, Rogue, Kitty , Colossus when they keep making X-Men movies set in the past and the present Beast is much more better than the one in the past.

Plus box office wise, X-Men set in the past don't really attract much money and I don't want X-Men to continue to be the #1 underperforming Marvel film of the year.

It's part fondness or pride over the OC but also that you feel if things are set in the present they for some reason would go the way you picture it in your head rather then mostly different to how you picture it in your head which would most likely be the case just like it has been every time you have had expectations.

There is expectation and there is reality, they don't often match.

Fox is just making it harder for themselves by setting these films up in different time periods.

Like look at Captain America and Wonder Woman. We got a film set in the past highlighting their origin story, but for their next appearance, they are in the present along with the other heroes.

You can't really deny the fact that the period setting limits crossover potential though. Not to mention more OT characters being rebooted as "born earlier". I mean I can't see them going on for much longer without using Kitty Pryde, Rogue, Iceman, etc.

Let's also remember the main character of New Mutants is Colossus' little sister... and Colossus is an adult in present day with Deadpool. Mess!
