The New Official Aquaman Thread

I'd prefer seeing him stick to his later costume. It grew on me. Plus, he really was mostly naked before, which is weird now that we have an alternative.

I'm going to assume that Aquaman gets his hand back and that other guy is never heard from again.

I like MM second outfit more. It just seems more alien(and they wouldn't draw him like a green human on steroids...wait). Though If they would make it short sleeved that would be awesome.

I hope they do bring Aquanewb back at some point. Not right away or anything, but it could make for a good story if he comes back and they compare and contrast their different methods of "Aquamanning."

My stance on retaining the water hand is pretty well known. :o

The water hand is awesome.

Bearded, shirtless Aquaman...notsomuch.

Bearded, shirtful Aquaman with water hand and no gloves would be ideal.

I'm not into the beard. It's too scratchy.

Anyhoo, outside of that picture, is there any actual information on what Aquaman will be doing in Brightest Day? I mean, jeez, that cover could just be a tease for his return in issue #50. :o

Nope, I don't think we're into specifics for Brightest Day stuff yet. Give it another week or two.

Story:

Terrors of the deep! A horrifying lost city has risen at the bottom of the ocean, and Aquaman must call on the supernatural might of Etrigan, the Demon to stand between humanity and the dark menace that lurks inside that forgotten realm! It's an undersea chiller like no other!

:awesome:

Yeah, but it's in JMS' wonky non-continuity, so it's cool. Presumably, there's not even a water hand under there to be pissed I'm not seeing.

I just bought Aquaman #35 today, the first appearance of Black Manta :awesome:

You know, while the Silver Age is known for its campyness really the Aquaman title was not. In the teens, when there are introductions of actual Aquaman villains that are not similar to the Golden Age--as in not random aliens or random monsters being spawned--I started to really enjoy it.

Black Manta's first appearance is actually not his first encounter with Aquaman. I wish they'd make his actual first encounter as a flash backstory or something if a new title comes out. If you read in that issue Aquaman says something like "it's my old foe, Black Manta"; so they totally met prior to his first published appearance.

nice. how was the issue like?

Pretty cool IMO. I like that old Silver Age stuff and it was really cool to have Black Manta's first appearance. Though I was afraid I was going to damage the comic since it was over 40 years old.

That said, I am really looking forward to the biannual comic book trade show I go to. Last time I went I saw and held with my own hands......Aquaman #1. Unfortunately I was $20 short to buy it. Hopefully they'll have it again to where I'll ask about the condition (obviously I didn't dare take it out of the protective bag) and if it's good enough, I'll nab it :awesome:

Yeah, I noticed that when I read it.

Which creative team would you like to handle a new Aquaman series? Personally, JMS and Jesus Saiz would be great as evidenced by Brave and the Bold 32. Grant Morrison with Frank Quitely would make a crazy Aquaman series, and Geoff Johns with Ethan Van Sciver would make it epic.

What personality would you like Arthur to have? The classic one? The PAD era persona? Or the Brave and the Bold cartoon? Or a new incarnation?

The Aquaman in JMS' BATB 32 was perfect, kinda like king Aragorn from LOTR. He should be mysterious, serious with moments of levity, optimistic, adventurous, laid back but when he gets mad get out of his way attitude, decisive, caring and loving (with his kingdom, the ocean, his family, friends, and human lives).

How about the powers? His power set from the cartoon with his water manipulation abilities would be really cool and make him effective on land. Displaying his super strength, agility, senses, and durability even on land is essential too. They should also respect and show the full extent and potential of his telepathic abilities. His weapon, the trident, should be useful and powerful in controlling water tides and weather, like in mythology.

His role should also be expanded. He should be the busiest hero on DCU! Balancing time with his family and friends, being a king and defender of 70% of the earth, being an occasional superhero on land, and a member of JLA.

There's so much we can do with the character. I think Geoff Johns knows this.

JMS would be good. I liked how he wrote Arthur in the Brave and the Bold issue.

Basically, I think Arthur should act like Arcudi wrote him in the Sub Diego era. I loved that version of Aquaman--gruff and stern for the most part, but with moments of earnest sentimentality. He cared about the people closest to him deeply and was tender and almost fatherly toward Lorena at times, but projected a very proud, strong facade, as befits a king.

For his powers, the standard set should do. I'd love to see the water hand, but I've given up on hoping for that. He and Mera both seemed very attached to the trident in Blackest Night, so maybe they could give that some kind of power to make up for the water hand. I'd like him to still have some measure of regular telepathy in addition to his much stronger aquatic telepathy, too. I liked that he could affect any creature with aquatic ancestry, including humans, if he focused enough.

I'd like Arthur to be different than most kings we know, I want him to be more happy and light-hearted. We always see depictions of kings as gruff and weary, and it would be a breath of fresh air to see the king of 70% of Earth actually enjoying his job.

The water hand was cool, but isn't as iconic as the trident. Aquaman with a trident is more iconic and looks cooler than his water hand. The special abilities the water hand possessed can easily be transferred to the much more cooler and iconic looking trident. And with the cover art we have been seeing, DC realizes this also.

I'd rather have both, or at the very least, lose the damn dish washing gloves.
