My grade of the entire Nightmare series....
Nightmare on Elm Street - A classic. One of the most memorable heroines in horror is introduced in Nancy Thompson. And quite possibly one of the most over the top mothers of a heroine ever in Marge. What was with her? And not to mention this is only the real time in the series Freddy is scary besides the pseudo-sequel-spin-off New Nightmare. Score: 5/5.
Nightmare on Elm Street 2 - Crap. The plot is contrived and just does not work. Nuff said. 2/5
Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Good fun. Craven's back with this series on this one as is Nancy and the plot really feels like the direct continuation of the first film. The Dream Warriors are all awesome characters and it's a shame that Freddy has to hack through a majority of them in the film. Easily my favorite of the series. Score: 5/5
Nightmare on Elm Street 4 - Although I'm partial to the original and part 3. This one also holds a dear place in my heart. It's good over the top fun. Freddy's more of a comedian by this point and the rest of the Dream Warriors are finished off pretty quickly, but the heroine, Alice Johnson, that takes their place is as equally cool. I like the plot that she has to use the best of her friends attributes to defeat Freddy. Score: 4/5
Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - Oh dear! Alice is pregnant! Oh dear! The plot is contrieved again! However this time it gets to be more confusing that part 2. I did manage to understand the film however and Alice being back alone wins some points for the film, but overall it's just not as good as a follow up to part 4 could have been. Score: 3 out of 5
Nightmare on Elm Street 6 - Okay. Here's where the plot gets really wild. Why is it that both Freddy and Jason tried to steal Michael's whole ''family" thing in their ''final" films. Freddy's looking for his son/daughter in this film. And the daughter turns out to be Lisa Zane's Maggie. Lisa's quite cool however, but it just feels like Nightmare's version of Halloween, much like the subplot in Jason Goes to Hell about a Voorhees having to kill Jason with the blade did their version of Halloween. Score: 2 out of 5
New Nightmare: I don't tend to count this one in the main series, but as more of a spin-off of the series. Here we have Heather Langenkamp, Wes Craven and Robert Englund all having weird dreams and strange happenings on the set of an apparent new Freddy film. The plot can get a bit confusing towards the end, but it's still a good telling of how a demon became Freddy and broke into our world. It comes close to making Freddy scary again, even though, imo, the leather looks quite silly on him and kills it. The new claw is cool though. Score: 4 out of 5
Freddy vs Jason - The one that we waited years and years and years and years for. The big showoff. Is it worth the wait? Well yes/no. Here Freddy has been frogotten by the town of Springwood and he uses Jason to rise his name to prominence in the town again, but that damn dastardly Jason just won't stop killing. As Craven himself has said, ''it's not Shakespere but it works." The fights however are good, but who knew Freddy was an avid watcher of wrestling?
The characters are stupid and none of them are at all that likeable except for Kelly Rowland's loudmouthed Kia (but maybe that's just my partialness to her in general speaking) and Linderman. Score: 3 out of 5.
