Comedy The Offical Saturday Night Live Thread - Part 3

I've loved Bowen Yang's Weekend Update characters like Moo Deng or the Iceberg or when he shows up in sketches as a floating head final boss like the Spectrum sketch with Kieran Culkin calling in.

But the funniest thing he's done is make his IG username fayedunaway because the day that Faye Dunaway passes, that username will throw the internet and his notifications into chaos.

The show still has its ups and downs. It's been a lot of meh this season but last night was a great episode because everyone was firing on all cylinders for Bowen's last hurrah.

On a surface level I don't think him leaving will cripple the show in the way that Will Ferrell leaving the show did for a couple of years until Wiig, Sudeikis, Samberg and Hader joined the cast. Bowen was probably the most famous person in the current cast besides Kenan but he was still very much a team player being a supporting role in sketches and never really being at the forefront often. I think he only had maybe two recurring characters that weren't based on real people: that weird doctor he recently brought back again in the Josh O'Connor episode and that Hinge date guy who wore the Stewie Griffin shirt. There were also a handful of episodes where he just wasn't there because he was filming something else.

But since he was very much a writing presence behind the scenes I guess we'll have to see what happens.

Is Kenan and the new guy the only people of color on the show now?

No there's that new guy they got this season.
In hindsight it had to have been known when the season started that Bowen was going to leave after the last show of the year. Ariana hosting that particular show is no coincidence. But I don't think Lorne planned on Heidi and Ego leaving so it wouldn't surprise me if they add a new cast member or two midseason when it comes back in January.

Yeah hasn’t Bowen said in the past that Cher would be his dream musical guest? And Ariana is his bestie, so I feel like those two were probably booked for this a while ago whenever the decision was made.

That sounds totally familiar and I forgot about that. If that had resurfaced I think a lot of people might have put two and two together prior to the announcement that he was leaving. Cher showing up in his farewell sketch was awesome but I also laughed really hard at Ariana bringing back the castrated Italian boy to introduce her second song, which surprised me because I didn't really feel one way or another about that sketch when it aired last year.

I'm not an Ariana Grande fan outside of enjoying her performance in Wicked but she does really bring it whenever she's on SNL.

I get Cher is almost 80, but damn is the lip syncing really obvious.

The other cut sketch makes sense, but this was better than a couple that aired imo:

Dan Aykroyd wasn't there either, but it was his choice.
Aykroyd wasn't there (neither were Bill Hader and Dana Carvey as far as noticable absences) but Chevy was physically present in the building for the 50th Anniversary special.

He likely wasn't asked to participate in anything because he's effectively banned from hosting the show. He has done some appearances, like in the 40th anniversary special, but I'm sure that and him being notoriously difficult and unpleasant played into him just being a spectator this time.
