Official Release
Marvel is proud to present your first look at Avengers #1, from superstar, award-winning creators Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr! Kicking off the biggest launch of the decade, Avengers #1 ushers in a new era for the Marvel Universe as the world’s greatest heroes assemble once again. But what deadly threats await them? And who makes the team? Find out on May 19th on the first inaugural Avengers Day, as participating retailers worldwide celebrate this landmark Marvel Universe issue with special variant covers, prints and more!
Plus, visit www.IAmAnAvenger.com and submit your photo for a chance to have your picture appear in an upcoming issue of an Avengers comic book. This limited-time invitation is only open to those at least 18 years old and therefore old enough to join the greatest heroes in this universe—or any other!

The event isn't written by Bendis so he churns out mediocre stories that don't matter as a way of almost kicking back and relaxing. Bendis is well known for using the events as a time to take a vacation from writing pertinent stories that affect the event itself.

The main Avengers book should take on a more major role in Fear Itself. We've seen more background stuff with the battle of DC and the raft breakout in b-titles like Avengers Academy and Thunderbolts. In Avengers and New Avengers we have flashbacks taken from an interview perspective. The tie in books for Fear Itself do not essentially tie in very well and it has a negative affect on the main event book. That's why FI felt weak to me.

Hmmmm, that's the 2nd time the Thread Manager closed a thread after I made a post. I think it's stalking me....:wow:

Questions:

1). Is that new Goliath Tom Foster, or did Bendis revive Bill?

It's not been mentioned one way or the other if it's Tom or Bill Foster. I'm assuming it is Tom.

2). Why do D-Man and Captain Ultra hate the Avengers enough to stage a raid on their mansion? D-Man has mental illness, but was usually very chummy with Rogers and the Avengers staff. Captain Ultra was chummy with Iron Man during THE INITIATIVE era. If Capt. Ultra was totally fine with Iron Man when he was at his most corrupt and storm-trooper-ish, why would he seek to stage a raid now? While I'm at it, Devil-Slayer was a perfectly stable member of the Initiative during Secret Invasion, and as a longtime Defender teamed with Dr. Strange a lot. Again, why the hate?

Bendis hasn't gone into detail as to why each person joined the team but it doesn't really seem like there's much hate involved. I'll explain more for number 3.

3). If Wonder Man's beef with the New Avengers, that these other fellows share, is that they're not pro-active enough with containing dangerous threats, what point is there in smashing into their Mansion and beating them up? Does Simon seriously consider being negligent (at worst) the same as being an A.I.M. cell? That's like if a neighborhood felt cops weren't doing their job properly enough, so they decided to organize, lead a frontal assault upon their nearest precinct and, what, occupy it by force or prove they could overpower the officers there? It makes no sense! In fact, half the reason the Avengers miss **** is because they're bickering or being distracted! Isn't this raid just doing more of that? They could miss an attack by Ultron while Simon and his pity party are smashing walls, man!

Wonder Man doesn't feel that they are evil or neglectful but that they've caused more problems of late than they've solved and that the world would be better without them. It is flimsy at best but it could provide some good stories (and I would think all the Bendis haters would somewhat agree with Wonder Man regarding Bendis's run). So it seems that there is no hate involved (for any of the characters) but perhaps a mutual agreement that the Avengers should stop being Avengers and stop bringing about problems or allowing the problems that they do allow to happen (examples given being Ultron, Scarlet Witch, Civil War, Sentry, Norman Osborn, I think Secret Invasion was mentioned)

4). At what point did Wonder Man, a character who thought it was a good idea to commit white collar fraud for which he was jailed for, and then trusted BARON ZEMO with a revenge scheme, who then went on to redeem himself no end of times, decide the Avengers were bad? Is the ion radiation poisoning him or is this more odd storytelling? I've seen Deathstroke The Terminator show more respect for the Teen Titans at certain points.

See above

On a personal note, I love how Bendis dusts off Ethan Edwards and, by god, Century, for things that seem awkward for them. Edwards left to be a healer, and now he's back and eager for violence. Century hasn't been seen since FORCE WORKS ended. He'd have made a fine addition to the various cosmic stories, especially since DnA technically created him, but now he's filling out the ranks of an aimless brawl. Such is the fate of obscure characters. What, was Blue Shield busy?

I can buy Anti-Venom and Atlas being there, at least. The former's crazy and the latter used to fight the Avengers all the time on the MOE or Thunderbolts. I imagine he sees this as something for ol' time's sake.

There's only been one issue so we've not gotten into their heads much at all. I did think it was odd that Ethan would fight them when he wanted to be a healer but I guess when healing is his mission and he sees the Avengers causing a lot of pain, it's not a stretch for him to agree to stop them for the sake of stopping the pain he believes they cause. I'm just glad to see him back and I hope Bendis does delve into him more in the future.

Century I know nothing about so I can't say. I've never read Force Works. As you said, Atlas I can see having an issue with the Avengers but Anti-Venom's the one I was most surprised to see on the team. I guess his problems with Spidey in the past could fuel his addition.

I just had an argument with JewishHobbit about Bendis on NEW AVENGERS, and I don't think I've criticized anything more than this preview, which I've read and felt I can thus judge. But, when I see previews like this, it doesn't convince me that I made a bad choice ditching his titles in '08. Just because D-Man, Century, Devil-Slayer or Capt. Ultra are here to fill out the ranks doesn't mean that I feel they should be written in an awkward manner. I imagine someone who read THUNDERBOLTS may grouse about Atlas being there, but I wouldn't know. Because unless I missed some very epic stories, it seems to me that quite a few characters are being written out of character. As in "are they being possessed by Purple Man?" out of character.

There's not been much character shown to actually say they're being written OUT of character. I'm hoping Bendis fills us in more in the Avengers Annual 1 because NA Annual 1 was just an introduction to their team and their first outing. Wonder Man's the only one that could be considered out of character but I think Bendis has some decent explanations (somewhat flimsy as said before) but at least he isn't acting crazy or evil or anything. He just has a difference of opinion and has decided to act on it.

Who makes up the current roster? I was thinking of picking this series up

Which team? The Avengers, New, Secret or Academy?

I assume you're asking about the main team which is about to undergo a roster change post Fear Itself.

Seeing Spider-Man and Wolverine (or his Skrull double) in there just makes me want to hit something.

Carol is FINALLY rejoining the main roster? Its about time. I didnt think she fit in with the New Avengers. And is that the original Vision or is it still the YA one? Thats actually a pretty solid lineup minus Wolverine and Spidey. Love Spidey as an Avenger but dont feel he's needed in this lineup. Thank god Hawkeye got rid of his ridiculous mask. I know its a classic but I think its really outdated. Also good to see BP on the team again

he doesn't even have a proper hammer. he has a stick with a macaroni noodle onthe end of it. **** that noise.

Soon to be with Bucky.

 This is why I don't wonder off into the Marvel Comic's section. Someone really needs to create an English section. And is this Bendis's working; I hope not! I was standing up for the man just a few weeks ago. Meh, they'll come back. They always come back. No one stays dead in the Marvel Universe. Hasn't Thor died before? Captain America, pretty much all of the X men, Janet Van Dye ( I don't even know if this is true, but I'm just going to asume it), Ares...list goes on

Thor has only been back a few years. Killing him off again is just... stupid. Plain and simple.

I know that  Currently on Siege. My bets are somehow Pym will re-create her or something.
