The Official Batman (1989) Thread - Part 5

Is it "wicker" or "wicked"? I can never quite catch it.

Honestly it sounds a little annoying to do live comentary because there are potentially so many of us, we won't be able to watch the movie in peace or really pay attention to it, even if we already know every bit in the movie by heart. I think if it was maybe just like two guys, similar to those comentary tracks it could work better? I dunno. I guess we could try :o

Annoying? If we were planning to watch a movie together that we were all seeing for the very first time, or even the second or third time, I might agree with you. However, as you said, we all know this movie by heart. Some of us have seen it hundreds of times. Have you never watched an old favorite with a group of friends before?

If you need peace, quiet, and laser-focused attention to enjoy this movie, maybe you should sit this one out (if it actually happens). :yay:

Sure. But I usually prefer to watch movies on my own. When I go to the movies, I never talk to my friends during the movie, we usually just discuss it afterwards. But I suppose the dynamic would be different here.

Okay :o

I have to warn you, I may not understand your english american and whatever accents. Also, I'm gonna speak with the most absurd french accent and I can't help it.

As long as you do plenty of that "hon hon hon" laughter at even mildly amusing moments.

I'm writing up a massive retrospective piece on Batman 89 that goes really in depth into the themes of the film, and why it still holds up as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. I'm about halfway done with it so far.

I will definitely do that, especially when Bruce is acting awkward.

I've been doing something like that about the whole mythos. I've written 400 pages so far, but I'm far from done (especially since I'm taking a break to write my own stories). It's really interesting to do, but it takes a lot of time.

Nice would live to read that when you're done

"One of the greatest superhero movies of all time"? You must be crazy.

There was no fully-detailed origin, The Joker killing Batman's parents ruined everything, Batman went after The Joker for the sole reason of The Joker having killed his parents (and not because he was a mass-murdering psycho terrorizing his city), and the movie was filled with terrible writing and a non-existent narrative structure. :o

Well, let's go into depth.

Scene 1. We have a Metropolis of darkness. A city, full dark energy and life. Within the magnitude of this, we focus on one insignificant family, lost to the abyss of a place that would swallow them all whole if they didn't keep their eye on the ball - finding safety from the sanctuary that is home. They're lost and desperate, like poor sheep, wandering away from the flock. Entering the lonely alleyways, where only the desperation of criminality awaits them, they find themselves at the mercy of evil...The terrified wife screams...and the only ears that scream falls upon belong to the phantom in the high shadows...

I'll fill the rest in later :hehe:

It is certainly one of the greatest. Few others are even good.

Superman: The Movie, B89 and TDK are probably the only three that I think could be be considered in that bracket.

I would put in Brad Bird's The Incredibles, and M Knight's Unbreakable to that bracket if we are not limited to just comic book superheroes.

I'll be sure to share the link.

I understand where you are coming from, but I disagree. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on my retrospective though if you get a chance to read it.

If you've read my previous posts in this thread, you should know I was being facetious. I feel the exact opposite way and as you do -- B89 is a triumph.

If I was being serious, though, I would hope that you wouldn't understand where I was coming from, because that perspective of the film is not only misguided but also inaccurate.

Glad you were being facetious. I thought you might be with the sarcasm smiley and all, but I wasn't sure.

"I understand where you are coming from" meant "I've heard that opinion before but I disagree with it entirely."

You may be sarcastic but this is all true.

They're good but they don't really get put with the big gun greats by most people. Neither does Burton's Batman. The big greats are Superman, TDK, Spider-Man 2, and Avengers. Winter Soldier and DOFP are climbing their way up there.

The avengers is one of the finest piece of filmaking, noone can denies that. It's bold in its narrative structure, it's deep with several layers of reading. Also, character development is really really an achievement, the kind you barely witness in modern cinema.

Technically speaking, it's visually stunning, and set the bar so high, only a few made to video movies can hope to compare to.

obviously, it changed the cinematic landscape for ages to come, unlike batman 89.

The Avengers...what was the plot again? Nothing memorable. Just a bunch of cocky, often times annoying, superheroes that go SMASH with a stunning overuse of CGI.
Truly, academy award worthy.
A mindless popcorn flick if I ever saw one.
