I don't think I've ever seen that Rolling Stone cover. Pretty cool.

I remember having the official movie magazine when I was a kid, and I must have read that thing from front to back hundreds of times.

Rise!

Final verdict: Could have been a truly great movie, but many parts are too dumb and I do not like its protagonist. :word:

I'll give it a 8 out of 10.

there's a thread about this movie? why am I surprised?

I love me the 89 "Brooding" Batman, slightly more than the "grim & gritty" Nolan Batman, but it's too close to call

My god, I watched this movie last night and thought it was pretty bad. Its hard to believe how highly regarded it was back then. Lots of really cringeworthy moments and I wasnt as thoroughly entertained as I had hoped to be. Granted Im watching this after seeing BB and TDK but Batman doesnt hold up well at all. I REALLY loved Batman Returns so I hope my opinion doesnt fall too much on it when I rewatch it tomorrow.

Ya know what is one of my favorite moments in Batman?

The scene where he kicks that one mugger dude through the door. God the way he just rammed his foot into that poor guy's chest.

There had to have been some broken ribs.

B89 is an extensively better film than either BB and TDK. :o

Well I guess the Prince songs sort of date the film but that's all part of the Joker's flamboyant attitude (in Tim Burton's version anyway) and it kind of goes with the movies tone.

I was 13 when the movie came out so I've just naturally accepted the film as is, there was no internet back then to complain about and if you're just now seeing Batman '89 after Nolans films then what took you so long?

I so disagree

I was 5 years old when Batman first came out. I barely remember it and I obviously see it alot differently now as a 28 year old

I'm reluctant to agree with 'better film' but it's definitely a better Batman movie than TDK. Close call with Batman Begins.

That was kinda your cue to actually give some level of intelligent reply as to why it's better, but I can see you prefer a different route. :o

Both BB and TDK have a better story than B89. Both have much more expansive, complex narratives.

However, a movie is about much more than simply an engaging narrative, and B89's direction, acting, cinematography, art design, music and general nuances of its overall story make it far better.

Well, in the past I've often remarked that the Burton Batman films are just twisted versions of the Adam West show, just as campy. But last night I was re-watching some episodes of the old show and good lord---

not only did they rip off the Penguin-running-for-mayor in Batman Returns, no, they also stole the Joker-is-redecorating-the-museum-and-the-art part from the episode "Pop Goes The Joker"!!!

It also featured the "Joker as an artist" thing, so dominant in Batman 89.

:wow:

Thats a great description of it. Its what I thought when waching it earlier this week. That camp kinda ruined things for me

Batman (89) isn't all that campy. In fact, for it's time, it was downright dark. It's just a matter of mother time having her way with things. Heck, I watched The Dark Knight today and there were scenes in it that I felt campy (the batpod running up the wall, turning around and stopping).

Well I dunno about anything in TDK being campy but I agree and I've never figured Batman 89 to be very campy at all.

Absolutely. You've been often wrong in the past.

Oh noez.

In fact there are episodes where the villiains rob banks. Nolan = teh camp.

I on the other hand find Nolan's Bat-films more of a chore to sit through because of their lack of humour. There's no fun or enjoyment in them.

For the people who think its camp, what is campy in B89? Outside of the Joker - who should be campy - and Knox - whom I'll be naming my first born after.

No way. This is the only one I'll just totally disagree with. TDK has many terrific performances. B'89 only has two, maybe three particularly great performances.

I love Burton's Batman movies but the worst thing he did was simply make the other characters complete throw-aways. Burton did brilliantly with the hero and villains but that was about it. I love love love Michael Gough, but he had very little to do. Gordon, Dent, Vale, Knox are ALL throw-away characters. Nolan's movies are much longer so his supporting characters had far more breathing room. Gordon, Dent, Alfred, and Rachel all have essential roles in TDK.

If anything, one of Nolan's previous greatest strengths was a weakness in TDKR. Characters like Tate, Holly, Daggert, were all shoe-horned throw-aways.
