Batman '89 The Official Batman (1989) Thread - Part 6

Is the digital edition out in July or delayed to August like the print edition? Hardcover preordered but would rather read online than buy the floppies

Anyone have a list of all the variant covers? Definitely gonna splurge on this. My most anticipated comic of the year

Delayed by two weeks (but The Long Halloween pt2 is out on July 27 so I guess that's something)

Lucky bastard.

That’s some ‘86 thru ‘91 art that would show up In SOTB, etc.

I love Tim Burton's version of Gotham City (it is hands-down the best depiction of Gotham City in live action). And I really enjoy his interpretations of the characters. They're basically the versions I grew up with. As such, when I heard they were bringing Keaton back in the Flash movie AND doing a Burton Batman comic to continue the story, I was PUMPED.

With all that being said, I really wish Quinones would've just drawn the characters as they appeared on screen. The in-your-face animated series influences on Batman and Catwoman just don't work for me.

His Billy Dee Williams Two-Face, while obviously BTAS-inspired, looks cool (I love the suit, it definitely feels Burton-y) and even though Robin looks like a homemade Arkham City Robin, it isn't a deal-breaker. It fits the tone of the films, imo. I wish he would have stuck with the Bat and Cat designs from his original pitch to DC.

I like how they're taking cues and homaging the Animated Series, they really are going back to that early 90s era

Very excited for this and it all looks great, but I do agree. I wish the art was a little more "life-like" and looked closer to the real deal to give it even more of that authentic Burton-verse feel.

Interesting that they seem to be replicating the (relatively) shoddy practical effects, going off just that panel. The glider effect looking all hardened, plastic and stiff as it did in Returns and then smoothly transitioning into the regular wingspan of his cape, etc.

I also agree with Blind Bat's comment. The animated series has had its various comic-book runs. It's been paid tribute to, many times over. We don't need to see yet another rehash of the animated series look, even in the sense of it being a marriage between the Burtonverse characters and the TAS art.

I heard something about it possibly being due to avoid paying likeness rights, but I don't know how apocryphal that actually is.

OMG THE PENNY JUST DROPPED!

Barbara Gordon with a load of confiscated Batman artifacts! Maybe she could use them to do some of her own crimefighting? Though with Robin are we getting a BatFamily established that quickly?

BTW Issue #1 is now available to pre-order on ComiXology for thise digital readers, or you can click to subscribe to the series :D

An homage to Jim Lee's covers re-created featuring Christopher Reeve and Michael Keaton as Superman & Batman.

Gordon's design is a nice blend of Pat Hingle's Gordon from the film and the classic comic book Gordon. Alfred is basically Michael Gough's Alfred with a stash (which also has the Allen Napier 66 Alfred feel to it).

Well that was worth the wait

The artwork is sublime, really beautiful love the colours, and they capture the early 90s feel.

I watched the two Burton films over the weekend, I could definitely hear Michael Gough as Alfred.

Bring on issue #2!
