Well I'm still hoping it can match Thor's domestic numbers at least. So do you guys think it can make about another $40-45 million domestic? It likely broke the $130 million mark today.

I would still be disappointed with Thor domestic numbers, but you can still salvage a franchise out of that. I feel like some boats were missed here.

Why? Because Cap is more popular in the US?

I'm predicting $165 Million domestic and about $215 Million foreign based on current performance...but who knows.

It's worth noting that Cap got a huge Tax Refund for filming in the UK, bringing production costs below $120 Million. When you look at it from that angle, combined with the low price tag of the marketing ($35 to $50 million), Cap looks poised to take in big coin instead of just barely breaking a profit.
Maybe saving marketing costs was one of the reasons for the low key ad campaign.

I'm still hoping for a 2013 release date for Captain America 2 :)

Won't happen. We already have IM3, Thor 2 & Man of Steel in summer 2013. Though I hope Thor 2 gets pushed back to 2014.

Thor 2 won't. It looks like it is getting a director attached now (Brian Kirk reportedly). It will be done in time for July 2013, I think.

Well, if Cap 2 does come out in 2014, it won't be on the first weekend of May--the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man just took that spot. Maybe Cap can finally get his July 4th release in 2014?

July 4, 2014 is on a Friday, conveniently enough. :woot:

^The fact that its on a Friday will disappoint whoever wants the holiday boost.

yep, pulled ahead of Thor again yesterday....by $275k.

It very well could be a Christmas release. Man of Steel is not really impressing me much anyway. I realize it's early but I'm getting the same feeling about it, that I had about Green Lantern last year.

Paramount should have saved July 4th for Cap, not Transformers.

Superman, although not as popular as he used to be, is still Superman. It will annihilate Green Lanterns box office.

Chances are Bay and Spielberg have much more pull than Johnston. Besides TF had that spot for the previous two movies.

Acording to Deadline .com Early estimates for Rise of the Planet of the Apes are 38 million And 13 million for Change Up .
Nothing on C&A and Cap yet.

Cap wouldn't have pulled in nearly as much business as Transformers did. Plus established franchises take precedence over newcomers.

I'm sort of tired of all of the fetishistic talk about a July 4th release date; it's so obvious and uninspired, and shows no recognition of realistic film scheduling.
It doesn't matter that it's Captain America. July 4th is a terrible release date for any film that's not already a HUGELY established property (over 500 Million worldwide per film average.)

Captain America 2 in early July will underperform, like every superhero movie in late june/ early July save Spider-Man 2, and like Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, will not spawn a sequel. I want a trilogy, and if Cap takes the July 4 spot, mark my words we will not get one.

I guess the best chance Cap has is a May 1, 2015 opening. July 4th, 2014 and it's goose is cooked.

People aren't specifically saying release on July 4th but on the weekend of that holiday. What makes you so sure it won't perform during that time?

The holiday weekend starts on the 4th I believe, and no Comic Book movie has performed well in a late June, early July slot except for Spider-Man 2, which was the sequel to a legitimate blockbuster. Captain America is a mid-sized hit, much like Fantastic Four was (a better movie, but still roughly the same level of success, financially.)

It's entirely possible that we'll see a Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer scenario play out, where the studio raises the budget of the film, but the franchise's audience doesn't grow, and the film sinks under the weight of competition.

May 2, 2014 was basically Cap's best chance at making a lot of money, and now that opportunity is gone. Marvel took their eye off the ball, trotting out Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy as potential future films, and paid for it by losing an opportunity to take the Captain America franchise to the next level.

There's always Memorial Day, which has been a solid spot for Disney in prior years. But, I think Cap on July 4th would do better than most other superheroes on the same release date. It wouldl ikely have little competition in weekend #2, and the fact he is Captain America coming out during the most patriotic time of year can only boost ticket sales for him.

box office mojo says the forign boxoffice is up to 73.2 million.

Deadline is now Estimating 40 million for the Apes prequel and 14 million for Change Up.

Why? Because Cap is more popular in the US?
Because it's Captain America. Because this is the best movie Marvel has made since Iron Man. Because this is a character that soldiers were reading about in the trenches of WWII.

It might be slightly ahead of Thor I guess, but there are still lots of big movies coming out like Apes, Change Up, etc. And no more summer holidays. Thor still had a bit of a benefit with Memorial Day weekend for another boost.

I have been away from this thread for a while can any tell me what Cap is BO wise what has it made so far?

Cap went into this weekend with 130 Million domestic and 76 Million foreign; it should leave this weekend with about 142 Million domestic and 105-110 Million foreign (20 Million holdover plus 10 million new markets) for a total of $250 Million by Monday.

It looks to be settling into a 350-380 Million dollar worldwide run.

The supporting cast may save Superman. It all depends on the trailers and marketing because it literally could go either way. General fans need to be won over with another Superman. So, it's all on them at this point.

Both Thor and Iron Man have a lot of good will built up and that will only increase after Avengers. Both have nothing to worry about in summer of 2013.
