First Avenger The Official Captain America Critic's Review Thread - Part 2

The History Channel is to history as the WWE is to sports.

Lol. They have some duff stuff on there but I think they run 'The World at War' every now and again and that's one of the best that's been done, imo (was originally made by the BBC mind you)

Obviously if you go into everything involved, from how the war began, what all countries did during it, and how it all ended, it's not so simple.

But taken as a whole, and for the people of that time certainly, it was that simple.

For an examination of the former I can watch any number of documentaries on the History Channel. For the latter I'll watch something like Cap :cwink:

War's almost never simple, even back when cavemen were around. This is actually one of the coolest themes in Naruto(yes I will rep that series any chance I get). I agree, Cap is almost designed to simplify these themes so I'm not hating anything.

If you want a "sophisticated" villain look no further than thor, a film which a lot of people had fair problems with as well. There's a place for everything.

Didn't America drop an ungodly weapon on many dozens of innocent people in one for "sweetest" and first acts of global terrorism? Sure this was Japan we're talking about, who not only staged a clever sneak attack on the innocent sailers but pretty much rapped and killed the Nanking community many times over, because they believed their emperor was the rightful ruler of the world? I mean where's the black and white in that. Where was Captain America to take down that bomber?

And of course there is the lovely pass/amnesty the US gave these (very) Japs for all their wonderful work in unit 751, just because they believed the research found in said facility(hell by any other name) was more important than global justice(if such a thing exists). This same facility more than likely is the birthplace of Anthrax and we know how that's come to bite us all in the ass.

but I digress, Hollywood will continue to make tons of money painting WW2 as a simple black and white type deal and I say go for it. I actually love these movies.

I believe in fun movies.

This is one of the reasons why I loved Inglourious Basterds because it fully embraced and slightly mocked the way in which WW2 is presented on screen. Even ones that try so hard to be reverent often don't really fully illustrate the complexity, though that's understandable because its impossible.

Yes WW2 is infinetly more complex and rich than the world (especially the US) will ever understand. But these movies let us have our cake and eat it too. Its interesting how something so terrible has become part of pop culture.

It's black and white in the sense that Japan and Germany were brutal, evil regimes that started the entire thing with the aim of world conquest.

The greatest thing about Inglourious Basterds was the way they subtlety made you feel sorry for both sides. Very hard to do when the movie was suppose to be all about Nazi killing. Note: sorry for going off post but wanted to get that in.

Just to jump in on the both sides thing, 'Cross of Iron' is a damned good WW2 film told entirely from the German perspective. You really feel for the characters there.

I always go by Metacritic when dealing with reviews. The number on MC will usually be lower than RT since it's an average and not how many are positive vs negative but it will give you a better indication of where the movie lies.

Dark Knight - 82
Iron Man - 79
CA: TFA - 67
X-Men FC - 65
Thor - 58
Iron Man 2 - 57

Captain America can easily go into the 70s which, I think, is great for a comic book movie.

...they don't tend to do so well I'd imagine.

That's one way of looking at it sure.

I'm actually analyzing from a hind sight perspective.

Xmen first class got 67?

^Umm based on that post isn't it 65 and Cap currently is 67?

Metacritic was clearly OFF with Thor. Just sayin' ....
Better than Iron Man 2 but not quite as good as First Class is exactly where Thor belongs, imo. Though I'd agree it deserves to be at least in the low 60's, and certainly more than just one point above IM2.

And I prefer Metacritic as well. The scores never look as impressive, but they seem...better-earned, if that makes any sense.

And had one of the best Nazi depictions in recent memory. Hitler and Goebbels were Loony Toon caricatures. But Landa was a perfect representation of what most Nazi's were, oppurtunists rather than ideologues.

so is this its final resting place? 72? weak

all sites are basically giving this movie an average score...its what it is..an average summer movie, it didnt wow me in anyway but i'm glad it didnt make me walkout (punisher warzone) if your a huge fan of cap and comcs, you will like it...maybe even love it...if your a movie guy first and a comic guy 2nd..chances are you wont be overwhelmed.

Nah, the critics seem to be generally saying it's a good film. Not a masterpiece, but still good.

And 72 isn't 'weak'. Might go up some as well as they will usually have over 200 reviews counted in the end.
