I don't think it is that being mentioned. What I meant was that I think it is either a seam with a belt like this one:

Or it is a belt, with or without trunks, that has his stomach over it because he is bent over. Meaning that, there is a full belt, and the highlighted part is what is folding the belt or folding OVER the belt creating the illusion of a seam or a belt with piping.

Hey.. I'm pleased as frickin' punch that Cavill is playing Superman. I am also happy at s**t that they got the giant S and the neckline exposing his neck down to the clavical.... I FRICKIN LOVE THE CAPE!! I just don't like that it APPEARS that they have eliminated the red break in the costume (aka trunks)

I gave the photo an 8 out of 10 on the homepage poll... the detractions being the OVERWELMING pattern and the apparent lack of trunks.

Agree with this 100%.

I think the trunks should stay, they've always been there, I've never really found them odd or weird, this is not Batman people, the suit has no real functionality, the suit it's just the suit, it's what he wears and it should be what it is (that is a suit with outside underwear).

For the record....I don't remember seeing you mentioning this before.

Actually I think I did in another thread about photos from the set, but whatever, let that poster who has an issue deal with it lol!!

That's the goal of deconstructionists-to take things apart, bit by bit. First the trunks are silly, then the cape, then the costume itself, next him flying is too silly-"Today's audiences cannot believe in a flying alien!", then you have Jon Peters giant spider in the third act. The anti-trunks, anti-tradition crowd are his little brothers and sisters.

This is caricature. I’d wager that the vast majority of those moved to express an opinion on the costume (one way or the other), are fully on board with the genre conventions. They accept that a) characters have fantastic abilities/powers and b) they typically wear distinctive (not to say avant-garde) outfits. Simply endorsing particular changes to a costume in no way collapses the entire mythos like some inevitable domino effect.

Incidentally, the Slippery Slope Argument can be sound. But it becomes the Slippery Slope Fallacy when...

…it’s asserted that some event inevitably follows from a prior one – without showing a causal connection between the two. Typically, several intervening steps exist between the two events and these are either a) ignored or b) just assumed to be self-triggering.

The onus is on the purveyor of the argument to show that – given A – A necessarily leads to B, which necessarily leads to C, etc. Absent such a showing, the argument is proved fallacious.

Although... I have (IMO) given a very valid arguement for why the costume needs the trunks and nobody has really come out and disputed that claim.

Re: the trunks break up the blue making the actor look thicker and not skinnier, like a uniform colour all the way down would.

Funny, I recall doing just that on page 23

Re: Just because you require some red to break up the blue doesn't mean it has to be trunks. The belt on the new Jim Lee suit does it just fine. So do several designs posted on the previous page.

ok two quick things. one it doesn't matter how long you've been working with art directors and production designers. art is subjective and you should know that. what you may think doesn't look good, others may think it looks fantastic. second thing is, you said "not a chance" as if you were a part of the production of the movie. from what it looks like, it looks like there are no trunks and that the belt does have an x as outlined by someone. thats what some people are seeing and for you to say "not a chance" isn't right. there has been no clear cut picture of the suit and it could very well be an x belt. you have said that there hasn't been a valid argument for no trunks and yet in a recent post you said "nice manip" to a few that didn't have any trunks. again, it's all subjective.

Well when the costume is revealed, and it has an X belt be sure to come back and rub my face in it.:cwink:

I hope it doesn't have the X belt honestly

again though I won't let it ruin the movie, I still managed to enjoy returns with that faux pas of a suit

I actually liked the belt in Superman Returns...I may be the only one though

I can deal with small tweaks in the costume as long as Cavill wears it well. Christopher Reeve had a neck like a tree trunk, so he pulled off the costume even early in the production when he was underweight. Brandon Routh had an ordinary sized neck, and even with a muscle suit he didn't look imposing.

I just hope that Cavill's trainer made him do some neck exercises.

The neck matters.

Agreed

ehhh...I may would have gotten used to the idea eventually I guess but at first I would have been highly pissed

oh there will be some set pics of him popping up soon I'm sure. I'm just scourer the internet and hope to find some good ones

I can just hear it now... Zach Snyder on seeing a one piece blue costume with piping and an X belt: "What's with the X belt?? He's not an X-man, he's frigging SUPERMAN...LOSE IT!" Or words to that effect.:cwink:

I was messing around on Photoshop and came up with this.

What I did notice while making all the various changes was that there is more 'piping' as you guys call it, running up the side of his torso on his right. I also noticed that there was more 'pattern' to the texture of the costume underneath the 'piping' on his left side - the side that everyone is talking about.

Did anyone else see this? Got me wondering if there's some Kryptonian design going on around the belt area.

(you can't see this on my photo below - I just saved it when I was happy with the colour)

I've seen the manips and I've seen Jim Lee's redesign... and all I can say is that there needs to be more red... and actual BLOCK (not a strip) of red. I don't mind the 3rd manip from HankTheTurtle's grouping (and the other 2 aren't bad... but could use a bit more red around the trunks (think Captain Marvel's Sash)

I pray that what I think is happening in the shadows of the official pic is actually not happening and we don't get the X belt that I manipped... cause it sucks! I'm hoping for something closer to HankTheTurtles designs than anything from flyby or the crap coming out of DC, like Jim Lee's design...sorry Jim.

For me, redesigning Superman's costume is like redesigning the American flag, or the Montreal Canadien's uniforms. They are classic for a reason... so why change them for the sake of change.

THAT BEING SAID... Zack did a good job of taking the Watchmen characters' looks and updating them to look good on screen and he's done a good job of what I can see in the HC official shot... but that secret midrif area concerns me a bit...that and the possible thigh plating/tubing?

I personally think we are going to get tubing or seaming along his right side there and down the outside of the legs.... and maybe some added colour in the trunk kinda like the following..

Belt.jpg

or like HankTheTurtle's grouping.

I have to admit that I'm starting to really dig the new emblem. It's a bit retro and a bit new. I've never been a big fan of Superman's emblem being of Kryptonian origin. I've always thought it a poor concept that the emblem on his chest just happens to resemble an S even though it's alien. This new emblem looks kind of alien yet still resembles an S. I can accept this. It's even fun to draw. Not crazy about how bas relief it is but the design itself is pretty cool
