This is interesting...

Me and my woman were watching Superman 2 on Netflix over the weekend, and she ended up falling asleep during the movie. Latter on that day I asked her why did she fall asleep, wasn't she enjoying it? She told me the movie seemed a bit cheesy, and that Chris Reeve "looked funny running around in his red undies". Those are her words not mine.

I swear, I never even told her about the debate with the trunks. I asked her her opinion on which suit looks better, Cavill's, or the old school suit? She looked at me with the biggest eye's and said "The New One!" and actually giggled about it as if it was a dumb question to ask.

I find this intriguing, as she is totally imparcial to the character and costumes.

Both those guys look skinny or fat. Cavil looks like a Superstrong Superman.

I must know the story about that one to the left of the Electric suit. I mean, seriously. Are those frills?

The only dumb thing about Superman 2 I could think of was the random-ass powers. Why doesn't Superman use the finger lasers, and since when can he peel off his logo and use it to bind enemies?

In the post crisis reboot, that was the traditional Kryptonian garb. Superman wore that suit when the eradicator tried to turn Earth into a new krypton, purging anything that wasn't kryptonian.

That's right. A new generation of fans is about to be introduced to Superman in his new costume. In 2013, Cavill's Superman will further expand the trunk-less Superman costume unto the psyche of millions.
By the the time the MOS sequel hits, the traditional costume will seem weird and awkward to the majority of Superman fans.

You're absolutely correct, it's not just your opinion. I'm sure Snyder and co. selected this costume because it is the right suit for this man at this time.
To have had Cavill wear the traditional costume would have potentially made MOS a box office failure.

The traditional suit is iconic and timeless. Just by changing the fabric of the traditional suit, it would look modernized. Im sure people will recognize the traditional design as the classic costume design for Superman. To say that if Cavill wore the traditional costume MOS would be a box office failure is an outrageous claim. He even auditioned with the classic suit.

LOL. Yea, Superman 2 is one of my fav movies of all time, I must have watched it 3-4 times in the last week, along with the Richard Donnor cut. :) Agree about the logo throw, always found that a bit odd.

Yeah, it probably involves the lawsuit as well, as much as people deny it. What the heirs will own as of 2013 as per the lawsuit is:

What bothers me the most about that is that I remember Snyder saying that the lawsuit wouldn't have any influence on the film. Clearly it has when he's using the realunch suit.

The film being pushed back to the year when the rights revert could also cause trouble.

I hope to GOD this Supe's personality is nothing like it is in Action Comics #1. Just because there are popular wisecracking characters does not mean Superman should be like that.

Was it a literal purging, like destroying technology and buildings, or wiping out culture? Because if it's the former....then that is a terrible plan. Because that would basically leave Superman and the 50 tons of Kryptonite Lex has somewhere.

Superman 2 was all kinds of cheese. Superman the movie was good. Everything after that stunk IMO.

I will not really sure of this, but I think "muskel tone" is misspell for "muscle tone" as for "muskel suit" well it would probably be "muscle suit".

He actually knows that....he's just being funny.

I'm still not convinced that any changes are because of the lawsuit. Afterall, the Action Comics Superman is golden age style except for the suit. It seems counter-productive, since that brings Superman even closer to the version of the character that's currently in dispute.

DC is denying it is due to the lawsuit, and Kurt Busiek said online that he doesn't think the writers and artists involved would make these changes because of it, but it's clear that they are losing some of those elements and plan to not challenge them. Lois is no longer a reporter, and maybe no longer a love interest. The trunks are gone. Who knows about his super-speed, although yes, keeping the early Superman as just leaping is straight from the Golden Age. But that's the only thing from the Golden Age that the heirs own that Morrison's using. The costume is gone and the "Champion of the Oppressed" character is not named as an element that the heirs own.

If I'm not mistaken, in the lawsuit, Superman would lose the CAPE and keep the trunks...so I'm sure the lawsuit has nothing to do with the change in suit...people keep telling themselves that for whatever reason. I guess to make it easier to accept that the trunks are gone...at least for now

No, visually in the lawsuit what the heirs are said to own is:

Superman's "distinctive full-length blue leotard with yellow belt & red briefs"

And what's gone? The leotard, (although later stories depict it as a 2-piece), the yellow belt, and the red briefs. Red belt on the DCnU costume and no trunks, no belt and no trunks on the MOS costume, replaced by the tramp stamp thing. DCnU dumped the leotard for armor, MOS kept it but made it all blue, excepting the gray/yellow/red tramp stamp junk.

The Donner cut makes it a lot better. Takes out most of the goofy stuff.

Im not too clear about the timeline of the copyrights. I would be nice if there was a thread about it not only to give us the basic idea of the legal battle, but what the ramifications would be one way (things OK between WB and the Siegels and Shusters) or (a possible change in the character's powers and other details). I suspect that another factor for the date change could be the legal battle.

I haven't read Action Comics #1 yet but wisecraking is definitely not part of Superman's character.

But it worked in the context of the time that gave birth to it.
I prefer Superman 2 to everything past the first hour of Superman the movie.
But I understand how it could seem cheesy to those not of that generation.
We would all be laughing at Cavill if he were wearing tights as well.

So muskle tone has nothing to do with muskrats? :o

Interesting. Has she tried Superman: The Movie?

Agreed. But Lester's mega iconic "General, would you care to step outside?" line is sorely missed in the Donner cut. The freedom of the press line is vastly inferior.
