One thing I was thinking about earlier, that made me really sad that we don't have a traditional costume this time - Cavill, with the physique he is sporting now, would have totally pulled it off.

It would have been the best live action Superman in terms of body shape and how the suit looked on him.

I still love the new costume, and I think he looks great in it.

But I do think we missed an opportunity to prove that Superman CAN work with the trunks, and still look seriously manly.

Well said; I don't understand the need to belittle and insult people and their opinions. I've seen it happen more than I care to.

And to say it again, I believe the trunks to be an essential part of his looks (among other parts). Sure, I'm not overly stressed about Superman not having them in Man Of Steel, but it just looks wrong to me.

Seconded.

Costume looks significantly better without the trunks. It's a dead issue. They're gone. Let's not troll on and on over it.

And Brandon Routh didn't look manly in his Superman suit?

@ElDuderino: An issue is never dead if people are willing to discuss it.

He was no where near as built, he had much softer features, didn't have a strong jaw like Cavill does, his hair was styled in this incredibly well groomed clean cut fashion and, to me, this pose always reminded me of how girls (me included) often stand with their hands on their hips and thumbs lightly on their belt...

It's one of the things I hated most about the picture from the beginning, though I couldn't put my finger on it at first.

Plus I think the material there doesn't help, whereas if we had a traditional suit in MOS but with the same material as the new suit design, we'd have a much much better masculine looking suit IMO.

I don't look at SR and even for a second think about how manly Superman is. Not one scene makes me think that.

With Cavill, we are thinking it in spades.

I agree. I like the new look, but it could have looked sweet with trunks too. he coulda pulled it off. it does look very alien as is now though

Got me wonderin what the new materials would look like with the traditional costume, started messing around in PS

hmmm...

I just dont like how the Trunkless design we end up with actually draws the eye to the crotch-ular region. Making him appear almost naked. The above PH manip proves that the Trunks would have worked 100%. Even with the squiggly lines still there...

That's exactly what's wrong with it. All I see is a huge blue lump. It's an instant joke.

And of course, I was just joking in my last post. So, on a more serious note, I'm pretty sure they'll use some computer effects to make the bulge less noticable.

As he became popular they played the "stranger in a strangel and" card even more. He was pining for Krypton in the Silver and Bronze Age.

Like the jews until the late 1940s he didn't have an home "country". Yet he was loving his adopted country and planet but he never felt 100% comfortable with it.

it's an allegory. And WASP just means mainstream American, at least in the old days. Technically the post-crisis Superman was some sort of pagan worshipping Rao ;) Of course, John Byrne could never get into the "jewish immigrant" aspect (that's why Maggin did better, he's actually of that background) and instead turned Superman into something that reflected HIS own history, basically being a Brit coming to Canada and then the USA. Unlike Siegel and Shuster he became a full-grown WASP pretty easily.

That's what Mr Byrne said about the subject on his own internet board in 2005:

He didn't get it, like he didn't get Superman. Being a Brit coming to America is not comparable to coming from a Jewish-Lithuanian background.

The superhero and religion thing is funny. Frank Miller claimed once that Batman is "obviously Catholic", but of course if we assume that his parents were killed in the 1910s and 1920s it would be more unlikely that they were so rich and him coming from a quasi-aristocratic background. :)

Great comments, and you are dead-on as to why Byrne failed with Superman. When they took the Hebrew out of Superman, he became intolerably whitebread.

As for Batman's correct religion, Miller is of course wrong. Wealthy American families of the early 20th century were rarely Catholic. Maggin says Batman is Episcopalian, and as he is a descendant of "Mad" Anthony Wayne, he absolutely should be. But who expects Miller to know anything really?

hmmm...

I think this looks good too

the suit it cool with or without trunks but seeing them on does really seal the deal

I still would like the trunks but Im cool with the way it is but...
I never thought I would Im even cool with the hair LOL!!!

How is that any different than a huge red lump?

The change of color breaks the costume into a top half and a bottom half, plus the red trunks hide it better. The trunks breaking up the costume just makes visual sense.

Basically, IMO, This:

My only problem with the Cavill suit is that without the trunks it looks like A superman suit not THE superman suit, if you understand what I mean.

Yep, the new suit really has alot going for it. They made alot of the right decisions with it, except for you-know-what which just makes it look incomplete. egarza's manip, like so many others, just proves this again IMO.
And the silvery ornaments, which do add to the alieness of the suit, which I like, still feels like something they slapped on there as compensation for the missing trunks.

And yes, Cavill's physical appearance and presence would've sold the classic suit 100%.

That's pretty much exactly what i'm talking about. Looks a thousand times more masculine than the SR suit :)

Nice work! :D

I would like for the whole "bulge" thing to not matter... But my good buddy just came back from Afghanistan, and the first thing he said was "What's with the bulge?"

Before that I never really cared and thought the complainers were just that. complainers...
