This is why I loves ya Hopeful, you get straight to the point! Packages and tramp stamps, I LOVE it!!! :D

I'm gonna upload that Vid of Margot Kidder (and the costume designer) talking about Sups cod piece (set up) once I get home from work. It is about costume design and this is the costume thread, so I see no problem with it.

:hehe:

Please do! I think it's very unfair that Cavill's package is getting all this attention - all the Superman actors deserve a go.

Actually, on that note, when I get home I'm gonna try and find that pick of have of Dean Cain in the black Superman suit... THAT was a noticeable package. I mean, I was watching it when I was just a kid and it made me laugh back then.

Lest us not forget Brandon Routh's mighty trunksnake had to be toned down with CGI. :o

To the point where there is almost nothing there... I mean, it just looks kind of weird!

As I recall the reason for the swimmers cup in Reeve's costume was film continuity. Previous to it's inclusion the repeating question on set before the cameras rolled was...."Which way is Chris dressed?" :cwink:. The cup solved the problem. Of course it didn't hurt the image of a "Super"man either, but that was not the first concern for it's use.

"He looks like he has a mangina in that pic."

It's retractable. Yours isn't?

It never turns into an inny, it's always an outty.

Wait! I forgot! He's an alien!!!!

Yep. He's got... both.

Stay tuned for the next installment of Superman:

Last Son.... No more!!!..... If you catch my drift......

Let's be clear

I mean he sexes himself up and has some abomination of a child.

As long as it's not Krypto I'll eat anything.

Oh god... What have I done

Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children!!!!

You can tell there is no news, we're talking about crotches. Sweet.

We must censor the evil in order to preserve their innocence. :o

I like to call it a 'balance of plausibility'. Some still say verisimilitude...but that's maybe gotten a bit too vague. The trunks issue is probably more about style/taste....as you really can't single it out more or less than any other aspect of his costume in terms of function, or realism, or what have you.

This is a very nice (and wise) description :cwink:. Some think that because the main character is fantastical, all burdens of realism and plausibility can be tossed aside. This is a license for lazy storytelling.

Now in BB, the functionality of the suit lent a certain degree of “realism.” ( Well, it was still a grown man dressed as a bat. But it had that “balance” you mentioned.)

For Supes, there’s little pretext that his suit is functional in the same way. But “realism” applies in terms of its origin. Back in the day, it may have been plausible that Ma Kent would have stitched together a jumpsuit that was inspired by the traveling circus or Errol Flynn movies. But for a modern origin, such inspiration fails the “balance of plausibility” test.

Agreed.

The suit doesn't have physical functionality as such, but I think two things need to be explained.

1. Where it's from/what it means (which by this point I think the logical choice is krypton).

2. Why he puts it on.

In Superman:The Movie, he just flies out of the fortress wearing it - now that is a lack of realism.

The funny thing is even going back to the golden age and silver age where it was either designed by Clark or Martha, the suit still somehow resembled Kryptonian outfits. People had colorful outfits with capes and symbols on their chests. The explanation for the reason the suit looks the way it does was right there but they didn't go into that. I suppose though, it could be said that young Clark had memories of Krypton (due to leaving as a toddler and having a superhuman memory) and so came up with the ideas for the design.

For Byrne yes, but in previous iteration it's functionality is it's invulnerability.

One of the biggest misgivings/oversights of S:TM, IMO, is the suits creation. The film hints that it's fabricated out of the blankets/fabric that arrives with Kal-el, but never clarifies that. The perfect place to do so would have been the Lois "I Spent The Night with Superman" interview.

Well I said 'as such' because of it's occasional depiction as indestructable... but he's still invlunerable without the suit, so the suit does not serve the function of invunerability.

Do we really want the suit to made by him mother, though? I mean...it's 2012, y'know?

Imagine....it's Clark's first week in Metropolis...he's at his apartment when his phone rings....

Clark: Hello?

Martha: Hi sweetie, it's Mom.

Clark: Oh, hi Mom.

Martha: How's everything in the big city?

Clark: Great...I think I'm really getting used to it...and I think I've found my calling.

Martha: Oh, that's so nice to hear. Everything okay in the new apartment...did you pack enough socks....?

Clark: Yeah, Mom.

Martha: Underwear?

Clark: Yeah, mom.

Martha: Towels?

Clark: YEEAHH, mom...!

Martha: Pajamas?

Clark: Y-.....wait, those I don't have.

Martha: What are you talking about? I made you a pair right before you left.

Clark: I didn't see them anywhere...are you sure....

Martha: Of course! I used that red blanket from......

- Martha sees a news report on the TV about a sighting of Superman....

Martha: ....oh boy....

Clark: ....Mom...?

Martha: ...um...never mind...talk to you later honey.

You could say it serves the function of being something he can wear without destroying it every time he flies into the sun or whatever.
