The Official Goku/Justin Chatwin Thread

I want a mixed Gohan.

then again the Brief family seems to have strong genes apposed to Vegeta.

Good observation, and it's true. The only thing Trunks inherited from his father were a few similar facial features and the sloped eyes of a Saiyan. Bra inherited practically nothing from Vegeta, in terms of appearance.

I want a mixed Gohan.

As do I.

Then again Goten is a mixed breed yet he looks just like Goku as a child

In the first movie, I'd like to see Goku wearing the blue and orange suit and in the next 2 movies, he has differet suits on. But, in the end of each of those, he goes into the final fight with his classic gi on. The best example of this that comes to mind is Spiderman 3. He uses he his red and blue suit in the beginning but starts using the black suit due to who he is becoming (not saying Goku has to go bad, just to represent how he has matured or something along those lines) , then in the end returns to the classic suit.
I'm not saying DB should be like spiderman 3..Thats just an example

Yeah, all Saiyans have weak genes, which is exactly why Gohan wanted to study more than fight. Goten, on the other hand, ended up looking exactly like Goku so maybe he got the ol' noodle really a workin' that time. :word: :hehe:

It’s just a fact. The guy didn’t come from Japan, or even Earth, so there’s no way he could be Japanese. :whatever:

Casting Gohan with a completely caucasian actor would be a little strange, I agree. But there's a reason for that, as his mother is a human, and Chinese. So there would need to be a detectable glint of Chinese ethnicity in his chosen actor.

Ok I will expand on it a little. How many caucasians are there with Japanese names? In the comics Goku is brought up around Japanese culture, but somehow I don't think it will be portrayed this way in the film.

Master Roshi naming a caucasian Goku, who probably will be living in a Westernised society doesn't quite add up. Why not give him a westernised name. Obviously WE know why, but I'm thinking in terms of the audience that is not familiar with the Dragon Ball series.

Well, I heard somewhere that 'goku' means 'air' in Japanese. So, Son Goku could be translated as 'son of the sky', which would make sense if he is shown to come from space. Alternatively, they could show him with a tail, thus being named after the Japanese name for Wukong (Monkey King from Journey to the West), 'Son Goku'.

Well, they'll have to do a little bit of explaining. Not much, but we'll obviously have to see/hear a few blurbs about Son Gohan or where Goku came from. He can't just show up on screen with zero origin.

Even if we don't find out that he's an alien in this first one, which I hope we don't, we've gotta have something. You just can't do that. We never hear about Peter Parker's parents in the Spider-Man film, but we know he was raised by his aunt and uncle.

As for the name bit, it's strange for a person of caucasian ethnicity to have a Japanese name, sure, but like I said, we'll hear at least a little something about him having been raised in a Japanese household.

Like, for example, if Superman had landed in Japan, he'd be named Kenji Kazaki, instead of Clark Kent, heh. Fate saved us that awkwardness by having him land in Kansas.

Well, you have to look at it this way, Goku doesn't have an ethnicity because he's not human & I just pray they don't change his name for when he's in school.

I have no idea how there going to do Goku's hair in the movie, I know this is random but how? Are they going to change it?
Any who I"m also sure they will keep Goku's story in some how. They have too. People in the crowd will be very confused about his story if they don't.

They already have pictures of Goku up, look for them, they've already done the hair.

Exactly! Why anyone would care that the actor isn't Japanese, beats me. Goku wasn't even human

Yes, it's really just that simple.

You didn't come from Earth, so you don't get to descend from any of their ethnicities, heh.

Yeah, for all we know the ethnicities are different on Planet Vegeta. Black could mean caucasion & caucasion could mean black for all we know so getting an American actor isn't a big deal at all.

Well, they didn't have the same countries we do, but several members of the cast were inspired by Chinese and/or Japanese ethnicity, and shared the same physical features and cultural practices.

That'd be nice to gradually improve/grow on a physical level. Goku will become more mentally mature too, but I hope he always retains that sense of childlike humor. In his day-to-day life, this guy is the epitome of good natured and nice.

Indeed it would.

Casting Goku as a white person was probably better for box office thats why theyve done it

I LOL'd.

At least Chatwin's got the build to be GOKU!

If that was a joke, it's not very funny.

If there's one thing Chatwin has that belongs to Goku, it's his eyebrows, for sure.

Yes, he has one of those anime-esque noses. There's really no one else of A-grade stature in Hollywood that I can think of who would fit the bill for Goku more accurately.

An unknown would have been the only other option.
