from my research so far, dragon ball is influenced by the monkey king and drunken master(jackie chan movie). that's all i know.

apparently he meant for dragon ball to be a weird comedy, but ended up becoming an action story. i guess he just came up with dbz out of his butt to please his fans. by the time he did dbz, dragon balls are almost irrelevant, and the monkey king reference was little to none.

but i STILL think goku's asian. because i'm asian. asians stick together.

Actually I think you are gettin your research mixd up... there is a new movie calld forbidin kingdom with jackie chan and jet li and that movie is based on the drunken master and the monkey king.... in the dragonball z(pay your respects) thread I argud the same thing.... how db was based on superman and the showd proof... it was like a month or 2 back but they had pfoof and postd it..... so yes db/z is loosly based on superman and monkey king.... o and by the I'm a thrid japanese and I understand the logic of goku or sayains for that matter lookin american

i appreciate you responding in a more respectful manner, but lemme help you with your lack of exposure to light-skinned Asians...

...there, now you can't say that Goku is white based on skin color alone....since those Asians are clearly lighter skinned than Goku.

Those two remind me of Nozomi and Ryo from Shenmue.

Not trying to fuel this argument but Heres a couple of pictures of Dennis Oh and Daniel Henney who I personally think could pull off the part of Goku (although I should point out that I don't have a problem with Justin Chatwin as Goku)

Someone like this would be good for a teenage/adult Gohan. His features are well distributed between asian and caucasian, just as Gohan's should be, being that his mother is Chinese.

But I doubt we'll ever get that far into the story. I fear Majin Buu will be left out for sure.

You couldn't cast a completely caucasian actor for Gohan with one of his parents being Chinese. Chi-Chi would have a lot of stage time with his character in his younger years, too. How would that look? A completely Chinese mother scolding a completely caucasian son.

Put it this way, everyone: Obviously, both sides have their points why Goku should be Japanese and Caucasian respectively. However, the fact remains that he is an alien, thus does not belong to any particular Earthly ethnicity. Hence, he can be either Japanese or Caucasian. So, during auditions, perhaps they did not specify which ethnicity the actor had to be and that Justin Chatwin simply nailed it best?

you mean to tell me that out of the BILLIONS of Asians on the entire Earth, NONE of them could possibly look like Goku? i find that very hard to believe. more prejudice i see...


you guys are like clones. you obviously aren't reading our posts, because if you guys were you wouldn't think that we're trying to change anything. all we're doing is discussing Goku's ethnicity. we prefer to think of Goku as Asian, but that doesn't mean we're going to start a petition or anything. please read our posts carefully before you go assuming stuff.

also, i'm tired of people telling us to just except it and move on. first of all, i accepted it the first day i heard about Chatwin being cast. second, you guys saying "get over it" and "move on"....YOU need to get over our opinions, YOU need to move on if you can't accept our opinions.

Tell me, where does hollywood is? the movie is make in U.S.A right?, that mean of the billion of asians, we have to eliminate the ones that not speak english fluently. Just Watch Jackie Movies and listen and imaging how many times Jackie Chang have to repeat his scenes for bad english.

Now from Asians americans, how many are good actors? and how many of those ones that are actors look similar to Goku in the face?
Now how many young Black actors have a face similar to Goku´s?

Now, the etnicity of Goku is Asian in DB, and Alien In DBZ, in DBZ even get blond with Blue eyes as SSJ, that make him more a caucasian than an Asian, besides, Dragonball Earth does not have countries, Goku etnicity is up to how you see it, being an alien he is not even caucasian.

My opinion is that they could have put Jet li and i wouldn´t care, but he has to play well the part, if not i would hate him and the casting company, Justing chatwin has acting experience, he is a new face still and he has a look similar to the draw of Toriyama.

There you go that is my opinion.

He at least have 2 movies in his shoulders, more than others, but yes he is a unknown yet.

hopefully he pull this, I wonder if he know how much his carer will be affected after this, and if he have read the manga and know how popular DB is, if he feel presure to play this part?

Tom Hanks just did silly comedies in his younger years, and Jonh Travolta only dance, but that is another discusion.

erm...no. i'm pretty sure they were going to cast a white actor from the beginning. i can't blame them, because that's the market. white actors appeal to most Americans more than Asian actors do. just like Asian actors appeal to most Asians more than American actors do. so i'm sure they were going to make Goku white from the beginning...


...the only reason i kept the race discussion going is because there are some ignorant and intolerant posters that keep saying that Goku can't possibly be Asian. frankly, it's insulting...which is why you'll never find me saying that Goku can't possibly be white.
